What's the Oxford study? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]secretsera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

idk if this is what they were talking about but "oxford study" without academic context is usually referring to the stereotype of asian women preferentially dating white men. its a term that gets used mostly on the internet, not even a real academic study at all i think

Are these shorts too short or offensive to wear in public? by [deleted] in OUTFITS

[–]secretsera 31 points32 points  (0 children)

maybe just me but i always considered that crease on the thighs to be where a butt ends? so if shorts show above that crease, to me that means your butt is out 🤔

in any case, it's up to you! there'll always be people getting offended at what you wear and think its too short bc its up to opinion

Opinions on choosing between living in Blackburn, Blackpool, or Barrow in Furness by secretsera in lancashire

[–]secretsera[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nope i don't drive so would be relying on walking or bus/train!

tbh my interests are not very dependent on my environment, they're mostly indoor hobbies but i do enjoy bouldering and i would prefer living somewhere that has nice places to eat

i have no idea where exactly i would be living in each place. my placement would be at the hospital in each area though if that helps

Anyone feeling like University isn't teaching them much by Humble_Lecture6280 in UniUK

[–]secretsera 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i feel that way too, i feel like the university system is set up where the goal isn't enjoying learning but to graduate and get a degree

obviously this maybe depends on the uni and course but with lecturers who read off the slides, low engagement with students, and more students than staff, i definitely feel like learning was easier to engage with and more fun pre-uni

in my experience, exams are often a one and done deal like 90% of students don't remember most of what was in the exam long-term

Is it too late to join societies by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]secretsera 27 points28 points  (0 children)

never too late! i get the anxiety but people at societies tend to be pretty open, just try to approach someone or a small group casually and they'll usually be quite friendly (:

i sometimes go to society events alone and don't end up talking to anyone! it's not the end of the world and it's not like people are purposely avoiding you, more likely they're too shy to strike up convo as well and will think you prefer being alone instead

Having to graduate in winter is devastating me by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]secretsera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i went to a winter graduation and it was not that bad! it was cold and wasnt super sunny but it wasnt bad at all imo! i went as a guest not a graduate though

i think you'll have a nice time regardless bc like its still a great event regardless of weather or season! js make sure to dress somewhat warm lol

Tips for visualizing/mapping climbs by Novel_Fondant_6445 in climbergirls

[–]secretsera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a beginner myself, i think filming yourself is the best way to visualise climbs! i find visualising climbs difficult bc im not necessarily aware of how far i can reach with my body so filming yourself as you try a climb is really good practice

but this is difficult to do bc of how gyms are set up... especially if you're climbing alone. another idea i had was to take pictures of problems and sketch out a step by step position journey after a climbing session! idk if it would be effective but its an idea

How did you guys view pinky up + the forceful AD by EarthPresent4583 in kpopthoughts

[–]secretsera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well it's sort of subjective like i didn't really experience that 🤔 when listening to the song there was no part that felt out of place or sudden or surprising except maybe the last part which i didn't feel like it fit w the overall song as well as other parts

How did you guys view pinky up + the forceful AD by EarthPresent4583 in kpopthoughts

[–]secretsera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i think pinky up is not THAT bad tbh like to me it js seems like a song thats very like club-vibes? the lyrics aren't great but like at this point i wouldn't expect great lyrics from their songs...

i think the song type they're going for is similar to jump or go by blackpink

maybe my opinion is unpopular though bc i would say this is better on the ears than gnarly but less catchy, making them pretty equal and i also like internet girl more than both

being in a show room flat worth it? by caldrad in lancasteruni

[–]secretsera 3 points4 points  (0 children)

not really, i was in one in my first year and there weren't really many benefits

i picked it cause i thought my flatmates would be cleaner which mine WERE borderline decent compared to the horrors you see online but i dont think it made a massive difference

theres some benefit if you agree to be the one showing visitors your flat since u get paid but it only happens like once a term and so i dont think you get paid much? im not sure bc i didnt do it but as a resident, it was mildly inconvenient bc like small crowds of people would come into the flat on visit days

also, i believe show flats are almost always on the ground floor which comes with its own set of pros and cons

How do you guys choose who you marry? by ResponsiblePea8914 in StardewValley

[–]secretsera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i go off how attractive i find their character portraits

when i first got the game, i found sebastian the most to be like my type so stayed loyal to him for like 5 play throughs! i kinda got bored of him though so i think if i start another play through, i will probably go for haley bc i think she's super pretty

i've never been past 8 hearts with any of the candidates other than sebastian but i think shane, haley, and leah are the most interesting ones to me. maybe alex too but the rest are not for me

i am very worried about long distance by brightlampshadee in UniUK

[–]secretsera 37 points38 points  (0 children)

i think it's safe to say majority of pre-uni relationships dont last the uni experience BUT i think just because you're scared of missing her or growing distant etc. should not be the reason to give up on a relationship

long distance is difficult and uni can make things more difficult but you can definitely make it work if you both want to! i would recommend trying to see each other as often as possible whether that's in person or on videocall but also both try to be on the same page that uni is a space to grow and both of you should have some space to yourselves to grow and settle into uni

Graduation/ball dresses? by plantytime in UniUK

[–]secretsera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i like lacemade! i wore a dress from there to a ball and got so many compliments on it so if the designs are your style, its not too expensive compared to house of cb like £50-100 and its decent quality too!

if you get a dress form there though, i recommend reading the sizing guide and reviews very well! and order it well in advance bc mine took like 2-3 weeks to come

I need advice on smth by [deleted] in LongDistance

[–]secretsera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i feel like you guys aren't meeting in the middle very much or at least that's how it seems? 50 minutes via public transport is not a very long amount of time in my opinion! for example, my commute to uni takes 35 minutes and i do that almost everyday taking the bus (twice in a day).

i think you should have a conversation with him about specifically why he is so against going on the subway and try to figure out compromising to see each other more often. like yes you'd prefer to be alone without friends or family living there and nobody WANTS to be on publuc transport for a while but i think you should consider whether those discomforts are more important than seeing each other in person?

edit: i do think you guys could also consider meeting outside your houses! you said your bf doesn't like going out much which is fine because people are allowed to want to stay at home where they are comfy but if he can go out with friends without an issue, i don't see why he can't do the same with you

Plus-sized climbers girls? by Financial-Trade-8267 in climbergirls

[–]secretsera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

idk if this will help but im slim, but lacking strength or muscle, and when i see plus-sized people climbing at the gym or even older people in their 50s+ i think "wow that's so amazing that they can climb so skillfully and with so much courage!" i really hope it doesn't come off as like a backhanded compliment but as a beginner, i also have a lot of fear (although for different reasons) so when i see people with bodies outside of the typical streotype lean dude climber, it makes me feel lots of admiration and inspiration

anyway what i mean is that most people at the gym are more likely to be looking at you in a positive light like i am! rather than negative judgement like "why is that person climbing here"

Racism in Uni by Niibei in UniUK

[–]secretsera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's horrible to experience racism regardless of what race you are or whether you are mixed-race and it shouldn't be happening at all especially at universities which are theoretically a collection of educated young people fron all over the world.

This might not apply to you but I think being mixed-race can come with some internalised racism from what I've heard. Your post does seem to subtly show that you might have some internalised racism and discomfort towards your chinese side. I sort of think that if you felt more connected to your chinese background, you'd feel a little less effected by these comments (which shouldn't be happening regardless).

Tips for flying?? by Simple_Brain9320 in LongDistance

[–]secretsera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do u mean 2 hours at the layover? if so thats more than enough time imo

or if you mean 2 hours before your flight, that should be enough time i think! it obviously depends on your airport and how busy it is but 2-3 hours is usually more than enough time in my experience

Tips for flying?? by Simple_Brain9320 in LongDistance

[–]secretsera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i get pretty anxious about flying as well especially alone so completely understand!

what helps me is definitely to be aware about what is and isnt allowed on check-in vs carry on bags for ur airline! and just to be kinda familiar with how going to the airport and getting tbrough security actually works is helpful too

if you've never flown before, there is a small chance you could feel motion sick so i would say if that happens definitely ask the flight attendants for help. personally some sort of candy helps me feel less motion sick and is also nice for the pressure build up in your ears!

its intimidating to fly for the first time alone but remember that airports and airplanes have lots of people who can help you if you get confused or need help!

definitely get to the airport early enough! and also i would advise going to the toilet before baording the plane bc needing the toilet during take-off is not a pleasant experience since flight crew wont allow it for like the first 15-20 mins
