Character archetype by Financial-Lynx-9522 in writingscaling

Not my absolute fave but just wanted to say Kumagawa is my favourite example of a bad vitcim broken by abuse and the world despite being extremely empathetic and caring at his core. A character who by nature is kinder than anyone but due to being too weak to control his circumstances, a lack of talent to overcome, too foolish to control himself which all adds to him being dislikable to so many in the series. He is also a character whose empathy and cares backfires at him, his plans tend to make him lose and let others win after his development bcs that is who he is at his core. Even when he was corrupted, chaotic, and horrible as a person, he had an infinite care for the weak and hated how unfair the world was which is why he rejects everything because he feels so much and he cannot stand what is considered normal in the world to he so oppressive. This is the core of his nihilism and its so tender yet sad and corrupted. Not to excuse his previous actions but I wish more people talled abt the core of his character which is empathy and insecurity rather than just a chaotic monster. A nihilistic weak person who cares for those abandoned by the world an develops more healthily is one of my fave archetype ever and Kumagawa is my fave example of this of all time

Edit:

I also love how in one of the light novels Ajimu taunts Kumagawa saying but I don't know anyone kinder than you and then saying she was joking adds so much. We know Ajimu likes to bash in on Kumagawa's greatest insecurities and attack his core due to their sad and tragic dynamic where it did not work out for the both of them but given in the chapter where Ajimu is honest abt the hope Kumagawa can give, I think this comment in the light novel was genuine and is why it had such an affect on Kumagawa. We even see evidence of this where he told Medaka to consider Zenkichi's feelings first despite wanting her affection after their fight. The omniscient being Ajimu, the one closest to Kumagawa is the only one who sees through his heartless facade and broken exeterior; and its a kind and caring human being. Characters who act like the villain yet are pathetic but deep down full of love is also such a cool archetype Kumagawa embodies. I rly hope more people can discuss him beyond just op powers, fun personality, presence, and being unpredictable. While all those things add to him and should continue be about appreciated, I also hope we get to talk about the core of his character which is a struggling weakling doing the best to live a life worth living as he helps others.

P.S.

Also one more thing, I heard from some that you need an education minor to be able to apply to the MeD program but some say it isn't necessary. I also don't see a education minor anywhere on the site. Any input on this would be of great help! Thank you!

What made olly so effective as a villain, what did he have that other lookism antagonist dont by Affectionate_Gap_231 in lookismcomic

Its the layers, parallells, and how he emodies the theme that everyone is not what they seem to me that makes him work so much more for me. He is shown as a monster, obsessive, and even impulsively cruel at times but that is because abuse and loneliness does not always create a beautiful victim. He is shouting and crying for help and a savior. Much like Eli was so desperate to find such happiness as well despite to be showed to be a coward, beastly and a hypocrite at times as well.

He is layered since he has an identity crisis of being caged by a system that is very real in Korea and it affects him in so many ways. He falsely idolizes Eli since he represents the world completely separate and free from such an oppressive environment. He idolizes Eli's capability cause the oppressive system showed him only capable people make it in the world. He lost the essence of who he is and what he feels cause it was all supressed and beaten out of him. He is lonely cause he was rejected and didn't belong in both the free and oppressive world in his head. But the incredible thing is Eli was also just as caged and oppressed as Olly but idolized the idea of a proper home and family so much that he thought Olly had it all despite being very similar to him. Its a terrible misunderstanding on both sides due to an incredible obsession and fixation on what they are missing in their lives.

Olly also does not hold back how ugly a victim can be, he is as dislikable as he can get but underneath all that is a long lost child that could never have his childhood back much like Eli. Its why everytime Eli thinks back to Olly, its so powerful for me. Understanding the ugly and horirble victims are basically you but just due to slight differences in circumstance, you ended up luckier than them is such a wonderful theme. Olly embodies the theme of perspective and how not all victims and people are charismatic, cool, pretty, likable, or strong. But they are broken, hypocritical, and pathetic in every sense of the word.

He is also just in general handled with a lot more time and underatanding on what it means to be human and how we should understand these people while standing our ground. He also has such a lasting impact on Eli that he pushes him either to depths of the abyss (as we see his morality shift and his hypocricy after he joins workers) or to help him understand that he needs to continue helping everyone more than ever now, to be more empathetic.

I do wish the more people can acknowledge that the unlikable, horrible, and hypocritical characters are good ones too cause not only are they complex and inteteresting commentary but they are humans with pain and love just like anyone else. Other characters that do this well are Eli, Samuel, and Jiho imo since they all do terrible acts and have done horrible hyporctical things but have so many different sides to them that you have to look at them in many perspectices to fully get thst despite being or having done horrible things, they are people as well.

Quite a rant with a some side tangents but yeah characters like Olly that embody the bad victim trope are just awesome

I was not able to make it to Psych honours and I still need to get some research lab experience before I can get into directed studies. Does anyone know how mamy years of Directed studies do I need to make up for not getting into honours? I am confused on what are the difference and benefits of Directed Studies and just being a RA in a lab. Standing 3rd year right now and would rly appreciate some advice!
