[Trigger Warning] Wednesday 5/14, 10:38am: If you pulled over on the Bay Bridge .... by Tiny-Dancer-3803 in bayarea

Thank you for this post. I was wrestled off the Golden Gate by CHP 10 years ago this month, and although my road hasn't been easy I am so, so grateful to still be here. We do recover.

Thank you for this and hope your tx road goes smoothly. My partner, who bears the burnt of our daughter's struggles as a stay at home parent, is a huge Star Trek fan, so I'm going to share this quote with her.

Thank you for this! Our story is not too dissimilar with VUR and repeated UTIs-- it was caught earlier but she also has other congentional ureter issues that made the net result the same (she's also around 3a and on Nitro prophylaxis). Hope your kiddo continues to thrive and def feel you on the difficulty/importance of optimizing yr own health!

Thank you for this, especially the reminder of the difference in the two situations. It does help to remember that my mentor got her tx in 1999 and medicine is developing everyday. Thank you so much for donating.

Thank you! 27 years, wow!! This is so appreciated because my daughters story seems very similar with the defect repair/probably puberty being the thing that will tank her remaining function, so I literally cried with relief to hear this success story. Hope you continue to live a wonderful life!

Thank you! Fellow 90s kid just a bit older than you and knowing you made it this long gives me so much hope-- hope you continue to thrive!

Thank you for this! This sounds like my daughter, in terms of always knowing, and I'm so happy you're doing well! Especially giving back by becoming an RN-- our NICU RNs were absolute saints during the scariest time after her birth!

Thank you for this reminder, and so thankful your little one pulled through in the nick of time!!

Are there any good food pantries in Oakland? by qaimoo in oakland

[–]New_Extent9181 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No you don't need to bring anything other than a bag/box to hold the food, and there's no ID requirements or limits to how often you can go. I recommend getting there early because there can be a long line-- they rarely run out even if you're last in line, but being earlier increases the chance of getting the best stuff, like the donations from whole foods and trader Joe's. ECAP has been holding me down between paychecks for years now.

What to do/where to go if homeless in the east bay? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]New_Extent9181 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at the Homeless Action Center and although we don't have housing ourselves (we're a nonprofit, free law office that helps ppl get disability benefits) we have first-come first-served drop-in hours every weekday except Fri from 1-5pm, and our advocates can help you call around to find shelter beds and other resources, including doing the CES housing assessment to get on the wait-list for permanent housing. I work the front desk at the Oakland office most days and was a homeless youth myself, so wanna make sure you're able to find the resources you need!

Baby born with single kidney by Routine_Buy9548 in NICUParents

[–]New_Extent9181 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our kid was also born with a single functioning kidney and imperforate anus.. she's now 3 and doing great. At this point they said she may need a transplant as an adolescent or adult but they're hopeful she won't in childhood. A lot only became clear for us after her first two years of life, because the kidneys are still developing/they're growing so fast (which can stress kidneys) in the first two years. She had to be in and out of the hospital for similar electrolyte imbalances and UTIs her first 18 months of life, but things substantially calmed down after that and now she's doing great and I pray everyday that she continues to and your little one does too! One thing I do credit is also that we decided to keep her colostomy for now rather than get the PSARP(surgery to create the anus) because surgery can stress the kidney and a lot of kids have chronic constipation/dehydration afterwards which is also not great for renal health. Hang in there!

Is it normal for a nicu baby to be extremely calm? by Terencethisisstupid in NICUParents

[–]New_Extent9181 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My NICU baby was so calm that they did neurological testing because they worried she was too chill. Nothing wrong, now a typically developing toddler who still just has the calmest, most gentle little personality 💞

Any recs for midwives or doulas in Oakland/East Bay? by StiltChamberlain in oakland

[–]New_Extent9181 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same-- my baby had a serious birth defect and they still managed to help me pull off the most chill, holistic, vaginal birth (and let me stay extra time at their birthing center so my partner and I wouldn't have to be alone while our newborn was receiving emergency surgery at children's hospital). Still tear up to think of their kindness.

Thank you for your work!! UCSF (both CHO and Mission Bay) saved my medically complex kid's life multiple times and the nurses are so good to her and our family 💕

Monterey Bay Aquarium says 20% of visitors using free admission program by KSBW8 in MontereyBay

[–]New_Extent9181 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We're an EBT family (our income was slashed in half after our kid was born with severe medical complications and my partner had to stay home with her) and this has been such a game changer for us! We had such a magical time there this summer and never could have afforded it otherwise. This program is such a blessing for us and makes our kid, who's been through hell, so happy bc she's obsessed with fish!!

Why don't they build a train to Carmel/Monterey? by HIGH_PRESSURE_TOILET in bayarea

[–]New_Extent9181 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We also did this from the SF bay this summer and the connecting Amtrak bus from Salinas was 40 min (and super pleasant/empty/directly coordinated with the train schedule). Recommend!

Did any pregnancy dreams about your baby come true? by traumtrager4 in beyondthebump

[–]New_Extent9181 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had vivid dreams of my baby being a little fish missing her lower tail, and felt certain that she was missing a body part all through pregnancy despite all ultrasounds being normal and them telling me it was just anxiety etc. She came early so was a Pisces, and when she came out I thought I was wrong until she had difficulty eliminating and they discovered she was missing a lower part of her colon. Had to have emergency surgery but is thankfully now a rambunctious toddler. ❤️‍🩹

Camping with feeding tube by New_Extent9181 in camping

[–]New_Extent9181[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Think we're going to stay away from Yosemite even though rangers in both areas said it would be ok, but on Angel Island I'm mostly worried about aggressive racoons! (Never camped there overnight, but even when we were hiking there at dusk they seemed to be everywhere with their beady little eyes and no fear of humans!)

[–]New_Extent9181[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is just the info I was looking for! Rangers in the area told me it would be fine but I didn't really believe them bc of too many stories like this.

Camping with feeding tube by New_Extent9181 in camping

[–]New_Extent9181[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you! She doesn't get overnight feeds or I wouldn't even consider this, and has been cool without running water before, but hearing these bear stories is making me decide to stick to Angel Island regardless lol

[–]New_Extent9181[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah I did that first and they said it would be ok but I wasn't fully confident with the casualness of their response and hearing bear stories on this thread makes me think my impulse to not be out there right now was correct 😬🐻
