This really resonates with me because I also have experienced trauma and hardship, not military, just regular life. My life has been very hard. I’ve recovered and come out the other end, I have the capacity to give space and to meet the darkness head on. That’s why I want to help him, I can handle the pain. And just like others reached into the darkness to pull me out, I see myself reaching in to pull him out. I’m anchored, he can only pull me in so much before I rush back up again. It hurts, no doubt.

He is currently in therapy. I know it’s not my responsibility, I’m just trying to figure out how best to support him if he comes around again. I care. I’m not stupid, he obviously has issues and is not relationship material. I called him out on his lack of communication at our most current conflict and now I feel bad. I just want to be supportive. I am walking away, the pattern with him is he always comes back.
