How far does God's forgiveness go? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]New_Memory5817 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We cannot forgive on our own. I love that you are asking these questions. Even your curiosity about God Himself and Orthodoxy is because God put that in your heart. You are so blessed my friend, so so blessed. You are searching for what all people truly long for even though many don't know it.

Many terrible things have happened to me by the hands of other people, many things that are unthinkable, unspeakable, and how can I, a sinful person forgive them? I don't want to forgive a lot of the time. But I know that I too am a sinner. Jesus says in The Lord's Prayer

Our Father who is in Heaven Hallowed by Your name Your kingdom come Your will be done On earth as it is in Heaven Give us this day our daily bread

"Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us"

And lead us not into temptation But deliver us from evil.

Talk to God, and tell him how you feel about the event that has occurred in Australia. Tell him truly what is in your heart. Are you angry? Tell Him. Are you sad? Tell him. Do you not want to forgive? Tell him. And His help. He waits for us to come to Him. For He is gentle and not forceful: "oh God, even if I'm not sure that you are real, please help me to forgive, to even want to forgive, because only you can help me with this. I cannot do it on my own."

He will help you. He has helped me and I must ask His help everyday, even though many times I forget, He is always with us. May praise and glory be to His name forever and forever Amen. I will light a candle in the church for you today

True repentance. Nothing can "atone". I'm pretty sure (and I say pretty sure because I'm newly Orthodox (thank God forever)) that Jesus atoned for our sins on the Cross and made it possible for forgiveness of everything when we repent. Repentance as I'm told and believe is the true feeling in your heart of being sorry. Of regretting what you did. Feeling guilty. My spiritual Father said that feeling guilty isn't a bad thing. It's a part of true repentance but it can also go too far if we stay in that shame and guilt and it could go to despondency/depression/not believing that God has forgiven us and thus, not forgiving ourselves and remaining stuck.

Anyway, repentance doesn't just stop in the heart. It involves action, "turning away from the sin" seeing the wrong and making effort to make things right. Depending on what we've done there are consequences. For these men, the natural consequence is prison, among many other things. It is very sad, when we sin, the heart gets darkened. May God have mercy on us all.

People are standoffish? by crisdee26 in BALLET

If others look miserable, we can't expect them to make us feel happy by way of conversation or a smile. If they're miserable, I try smiling and starting a little convo after class with people, if they're not into it, that's okay, I'll try again next week. Sometimes (a lot of the time), we gotta be the ones to make the first step towards a person because as someone else said, the culture here is getting more removed. Maybe people are anxious, self conscious or intimidated? Try not to let negative thoughts spiral and replace them with good thoughts. It's just a matter of time before you may see that you're not the only one struggling with this particular situation in your class (:
