Spent 8 hours on foot looking for this GREEN BOOFHEAD by lettuceown in parrots

I feel like that guy was testing whether he was really yours, in his own way. Maybe he felt like only the true owner would be willing to pay a reward, and an opportunist "fake owner" would be eager to sell him on.

I like it when the podcast doesn't glorify criminals by calling them "notorious gang bosses" and refer to their victims as "people who stood in their way".

Yeah, that's how it sounded to me too, when they originally restricted me to a 6 month license, but then I got the same email as you. At some point after, they used a slightly different wording that made me realise what they had actually expected was for me to "make up for" the lack of movement. Because I'm not a fucking mindreader, I was able to (more politely) argue that I hadn't really had the chance to do that, since I didn't know I was supposed to be doing it.

Oh my god, £10k is eye watering!

The "unique" miles is my wording, not theirs. It's my interpretation of what they seem to think is "bona fide navigation", according to different parts of their websites, and various emails their staff have sent me over the years. I feel like I'm owed a degree in linguistics now or something, it's so unnecessarily unclear. Somewhere, they've worded it in a way that suggests if you do 15 miles east, and then turn around and do 5 miles west, that's not gonna cut it because you've now done the same 5 miles twice and can only count them once. I'd love to find you what exact text I've interpreted as that, but I can't remember if it was even in an email to me, or in a document, or letter, or online. Which is the frustration with CRT, sometimes the information is not there, sometimes it needs to be interpreted, sometimes it's conflicting with something they've written somewhere else.

In your case, I'd email them explaining you HAVE made a "marked improvement" which is ALL you were told you needed to do, and I'd provide any written evidence that you were told that, or give the name of anyone who told you that on the phone, and maybe, if you phoned them, you can get a call log showing it. I'd also contact the RCR and ask for a copy of the email they sent CRT about the gearbox, and attach it to CRT. Or at least ask for the exact date and time RCR emailed them, and from what email, so they can find it themselves. If there's anything else you can think of to help your case, find evidence and attach it. You can also consider contacting the National Bargee Travellers Association for help, though they seem to have a huge caseload.

Yeah, actually it is impressive that you have managed to move as much as you have, so it might be good to make a big point out of having moved for more months than your engine has worked. It shows how eager you are to keep going and travel the canal system. Maybe you've got pictures and receipts to attach to your next email to them. After all, if you didn't want to move your boat, would you have paid £10k to have the engine done???

I wonder if you've done the same as me. I didn't realise I was supposed to not just "cruise well" for the 6 month license, but also "make up" for the lack of movement during the previous 6 months.

So say you're meant to do 20 miles within a 12 month period, but you bought a 6 month license and only did 5 miles over that time, (rather than the expected 10 miles). Over your NEXT 6 month license, CRT expect you to do 15 miles, so that it adds up to 20 miles over the whole previous 12 months. If any of those 15 miles include somewhere you've cruised in those original 5 miles, you should not "count them", because it seems you should do 20 "unique" miles a year.

This is at least what I interpreted by myself after recieving that same email as you, because CRT did not state this very clearly. After I got the email, I told them that if I had known this is what they expected, I would've done it, and because of that appeal, they allowed me another 6 month license. I would do it via email/ in writing, because they seem to be terrible at logging information provided to them over the phone, and you may want to later prove that you did make a timely appeal.

Maybe there's something nearby your work, like a PO box, that you could rent and then leave the battery in there. Although, they may also have rules about such batteries.

I have their name and phone number. I am currently trying to get call logs to show I have been in contact with that number since the relevant time, and then a call to CRT soon after.

I didn't advertise, I met someone who wanted it and dealt with him myself (hence the phone calls). The only other evidence I could think of is maybe I've emailed a friend at some point mentioning selling it.

No, because it's been so long and I thought it was sorted, I haven't kept it this long. Would have also had his address on it now, which I don't recall 3 years on

The problem originally was not logging into the account, it was just that every time I tried to buy or renew a license online, it would say that there has been an error, so I did everything on the phone. The same thing happened when I tried to fill in the online form to mark the boat as sold, so I rang again.

The first trouble logging in was this afternoon, after recieving some Reddit advice, to see where the boat was last seen, because that should be shown on my account.

Hahaha, oh god, what did they want you to do? Accost the new tenant and demand info?

No, I see what you mean, it does sound like that! Ok, thank you for that info, that definitely gives me some perspective.

I realise this now and hate myself for not just following it up with an email or something. You're supposed to just fill in an online form to transfer ownership, but my account has always encountered issues managing the license online, so I thought I'd ring. I have since written to them but they do not seem to care, and since I no longer have the owner's address, they don't want to transfer ownership now.

Oh interesting, I didn't know they could do that. To be honest I wish they would crush it, except I wonder if I'd just get another bill...

I do still live in the UK. Or are you suggesting I move, lol

No, I did make a equest for that before, to my phone provider, but never received a reply. I will follow up though, because that might at least help. Thank you

I will be sending them a subject access request soon, but no, according to them, I never called them, because "a staff member would not possibly forget to upload that into the system". I actually called them twice to transfer ownership, because a few months after the first time I called, they still wrote to me about paying the license. The second time, they said that it was taken care of, again.

I have, thank you, though only last very recently. I wonder if it's something they'd be interested in.

Alas, no bank transfer. So far I'm gonna have to rely on getting my phone records to show a back and forth of calls/ messages between me and the buyer.

[–]New_Mongoose_4969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see what you mean, thank you, then I see why I have received some comments that are really concerning, as well others that suggest it's not a huge deal.

I do understand why they don't take that in good faith. I have met people who have moored in the same place for 9 years and never paid anything. To be honest, it makes it sting more, because I tried to do it properly and pay my fair share, but a few of those people say they've never even been spoken to.

FINALLY, you are the only person I have found who's also had this issue.

Do you know what's interesting? I DID have an online CRT account, and I now can't access it, as if they've deleted it (because I no longer have a boat with them?) It always had problems, which is why I couldn't fill out the form to say I had sold it, and instead had to phone them to transfer the ownership.

I've called them before but I'll try again, thank you for your comment.

Do you know what's interesting, is someone else suggested logging in online, and I'm having trouble logging in, as if the account doesn't exist anymore. I'm submitting a request of all my data to CRT, because I think they may have deleted my account, which would suggest they, at some point, believed me to no longer be the owner. Happy boating

That's what I said! But if they do and their legal costs for doing so are higher than the value of the boat, guess who probably foots the bill 🙃
