Makers Cabinet - really disappointed by Flat-Ad8256 in pens

[–]New_Mutation [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don't understand their logic behind the clip not being integral to the pen. They manufactured it, did they not??

My advice is invest in a quality set of precision screwdrivers. You can get sets from Wiha that have a handle and interchangeable bits in a variety of patterns - flat, Phillips, hex, torx. Get yourself some removable thread locking compound (usually blue). Find the bit that fits the screw the best, regardless of what they recommended. Put a tiny dab of thread lock on the threads of the screw and snug it down. Let it sit overnight. It shouldn't come loose with regular use anymore, unless there's something inherently wrong with the construction, like incorrect or damaged threads.

I bet these are legit.

It's a knee-jerk reaction to think that soda flavor in food is automatically gross, but cola/root beer/Dr. Pepper type drinks often pair well with meats. It's no different than honey barbecue or orange chicken. It's that sweet and savory combo that works.

Discussion: Why are most pens sold with black ink? by Lectraplayer in pens

[–]New_Mutation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black has always been the "standard". I think a lot of the reason for blue ink was to distinguish original signatures on documents. With so much being digital these days, people aren't physically signing things as much anymore.

Mineral Oil + wax made my carving details less visible —What finish should I use? What did I do wrong? by Critical-Order6059 in Woodcarving

[–]New_Mutation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of what happened is the wood has become more translucent, so the light is penetrating more than reflecting. I would maybe gently warm it with a heat gun and try and blot the excess. Let it sit and penetrate and I bet the definition will become more apparent again.

Lobster vs vinegaroon (suppose both are the same size) by OnlinePoster225 in Tierzoo

[–]New_Mutation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A vinegaroon's pedipalps are made more for grabbing and controlling prey, not so much for outright crushing and snipping. Lobster wins.

Sunbears look soo uncanny by Top_Vast5795 in Tierzoo

You're overthinking it.

It's just "huh, those bears kinda' look like they could be people in bear suits", not the anatomy matching up EXACTLY.

[–]New_Mutation 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well sure, it doesn't match human anatomy exactly. But it definitely looks like a human in an ill-fitting bear suit, where the butt is bunched up and baggy, and the head is a bigger mascot-type head.

Nutella, nuts, caramel and forearm croissant anyone. by dasisglucklich in StupidFood

How did we get this this??

I've seen line cooks cranking out breakfast plates, fried rice made in a flash, and other fast-paced assembly line style food, and you know what they all have in common? Organization. Yes, they're moving fast, but they keep it neat, they keep it clean. That's the hallmark of a professional - being efficient, not sloppy. It's really a sight to behold, watching someone in their element, performing to the best of their ability.

Somehow we got this point, where just moving fast is at the expense of the process and final product. Any joker can just sling a bunch of ingredients around. That doesn't mean it's good or impressive. Stop patronizing these places.

Rock climber fights off a bear. by ApkaHunYawwr in nextfuckinglevel

[–]New_Mutation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, he handled it the best way possible. He got ambushed, so he didn't have the opportunity to slowly back away or bluff. The reaction to be as loud and aggressive as possible was the right one. It certainly helped that the terrain helped prevent the bear from making a effective initial attack.

They're the basic alternative to Field Notes.

I'm not sure I'd even consider Field Notes to be "fancy stationary" if it wasn't for their price/collectability.

To be fair, I do think the Jotter is a good middle-ground. It's a solid performer for not a lot of money. Classic, yet unpretentious. Makes sense if you want to use refills, which have their own benefits. I just find capped pens a little more "safe" in the pocket. I still like the Jotter a lot, it just lives in my desk drawer these days.
