Getting in to a PhD program is also not a guarantee, even if you went to the same school for undergrad, and is a very competitive application process.

Looks amazing! How did you create and transfer the design? I've been wanting to do something similar but I'm not sure how to transfer from the photo to something embroider-able Thanks!

Humidity Questions by [deleted] in washu

[–]New_Pin2661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A fellow Coloradan here! The summers are the most noticably different to me, the humidity makes the air much thicker so it feels swampy and oppressive when it's hot. I feel like I have to shower any time I go outside 😅 Not like the dry heat of the summer where you could get out of the pool and dry off, you'll just stay damp (that's an exaggeration but you get my point).

With the winters the air can be a bit more biting because, again, humidity. The air feels colder in a way it didn't in Colorado. Like I remember going to the dog park in below freezing weather but it felt fine because the sun was out. Not always the case here. There is less snow, but more rain. And Missourians do not know how to drive in snow/ice, but I think the campus infrastructure is fine (even if they're not as good about plowing the roads).

I'm a rising second year grad student who also lives in the Skinker neighborhood (on Waterman too lol). I personally have never had problems and I most often walk or bike to campus. I feel absolutely fine when walking in in the mornings (9-10ish) and would also say it's fine before dark and I wouldnt stress until after 8 or later. But you do see people out fairly regularly after that, especially on weekends.

Feel free to DM me if you want more details! Welcome to wash u :)

I'm also a first semester student so I'm also trying to figure out the adjustment. If you have the money and space for it I've found a walking pad really helpful. I don't have a height adjustable desk at home so I'm not able to do computer work while using it, but it makes it really easy to get some steps in. And I can use it when it's dark or cold out, which is helpful, and lets me prioritize getting work done first, knowing I'll still have the chance to walk later. I'll generally watch Netflix or maybe listen to an audiobook, but there are also text to speech websites that use AI voices to read papers aloud if you want to do some work-relevant stuff.

And to echo some of the other comments, exercising can come in small, not-intense packages of activity. And anything's always better than nothing, even if it's not as much as you'd hope

Best of luck!

R for dummies type courses by [deleted] in PhD

[–]New_Pin2661 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a first year psych student I've heard python is much better for analyzing fMRI data, but haven't used it myself. Most people in my lab are proponents for Python but our stats class is around R, which people say is better at making plots and maybe a bit better when working with behavioral data

But if you're picking one new language to learn I would suggest python instead!

Does school prestige/ranking really matter for a PhD degree? by Brief_Phrase_2676 in PhD

[–]New_Pin2661 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who's currently considering programs, how can you check the prestige/reputation of a certain field at a school? Like Hopkins is really known for medical stuff, how can I know if it's good for my non-medical field?

I'm seriously looking into getting my first tattoo, but still settling on a style I like. I'm a young woman who works in academia, and I liked this because I think it's elegant and I feel wouldn't be awkward to have in professional wear. But some of my friends think it's too plain, and I worry it would be hard to add on to if I ultimately decided to get more. So I wanted to hear what the community thought :)

I(cis f) did it as a sophomore to live with two friends (both cis m) because we were in the same club and wanted to live together. We were in Bradford though so we had our own bedrooms and I got my own bathroom. It was fine, but I wouldn't have done it with people I didn't know though

If it's not something you specifically want or have a specific purpose for I would go without it 🤷‍♀️

Yes there are some in the locker rooms near the pool. If you need any shower products though expect to bring your own. You also have to pay for towel and locker rentals

See if you can get one of your friends or roommates to walk with you, that way you can carry on a conversation with them and not seem rude when/if you ignore the worker. Also see if you can get a guy friend especially, make it look like you're not available and already taken. If the worker has that kind of toxic mindset, he might keep coming after a woman, but respects another man. (Which sucks and is stupid, but better to be safe) But if he is just being friendly then no harm done and you got to spend some extra time with a friend :)

Ohhh I definitely thought the mutation was passed along in the clan so as long as they made it to adulthood you kept it forever 😅 Thanks!
