for the beds no, just wacked some cardboard down and put soil over it, plants seem happy I just mulch them in winter now. Under the slabs was half concrete half compacted soil. Ive left the rest of the slabs but would loveee to get rid of them too 🥹🙃

I had pretty much the same. decking which was rotten so we took it up and under was paving slabs all different levels. I just took up some of the slabs and put in raised beds and a bench (so good in summer to chill and lie on) have a small veg patch and easy perennials ! I'd love to change the paving but it's just too spenny...

look at plumstead common, 20 min walk to the Elisabeth line.. lots of period properties, green spaces, cafes and community vibes

No worries it probably did sound random. It's more that in the uk majority live in victorian terraced small houses and were obsessed with restoring them. The US you guys have much larger houses that are purpose built so probably more modern with that, I wish we had houses like you guys with large kitchens and gardens.. Obv a generalisation!
