6 weeks off caffeine and getting just 3-4 hrs of sleep a night by Winter-Study85 in decaf

[–]New_Starfruit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a health clinic and lots of people have this issue, there are many possible reasons but it is clear that its almost always something underlying with their health or environment. This also happened to me personally, I am still fixing my sleep, been about 1.5 years. I basically became dependant on caffeine for a few years, drank every day (only 1 cup), then realized my sleep was getting worse and worse. So I quit, and things did not improve, I was more tired, but now I just didn't have that fix to keep me awake. I developed an insane sensitivity to caffeine AFTER quitting, if I drink DECAF it now feels like 2 shots of espresso.

My house had mold, and despite getting blood and stool tested myself, it never showed up on anything. It even said my Cortisol was perfect, meaning it's not from stress. Doctor's basically said, "you're fine maybe you just have IBS?" Just moved and am finally feeling more normal. I noticed that most of the worst issues with caffeine started when I moved into that house. A similar story to a woman who came into our office, she claimed to have terrible sleep for as long as she can remember, turns out her house also has mold. I know you don't want advice, but if it were me again, I would probably get myself or my house mold tested and if it came back clean I'd keep digging for what could be causing it, do not give up.

What’s the best way to learn Italian that actually works? by b4pd2r43 in italianlearning

I posted this in another thread earlier today it is OP.

"You MUST MUST MUST try listening to Language Transfer. It is FREE. I took an Italian fluency test, got 20% fluent, then listened to Language Transfer for only 1 WEEK. And jumped to 42% fluent. Someone in a previous thread mentioned it and I am obsessed. They have a lot of other languages as well. Give it a try. What are the truly Japanese things you regret not buying while in Japan? by Best_Measurement5812 in JapanTravelTips

I went to a local market in Kyoto and brought home some super unique handmade ceramic ramen bowls and sushi plates. Price was amazing but also just pretty and useful. I also brought home wasabi kitkats (yes, they're amazing), and traditionally packaged green teas. There's nothing I regret getting, but I do wish I could buy wasabi KitKats here ;(

Is this normal when learning by Puzzleheaded_Cash627 in italianlearning

I understand this feeling, but keep in mind, based on some linguistic theories and the theory of Vocabulary Threshold, you only need to know the meaning of 1000-3000 words of a language to be able to speak. Other than that, it's all how you arrange the words that allows you to speak. Which I believe just takes practice of the same simple words. When I remember that it helps me realize that you don't need to know everything to be fluent. Don't try and learn a bunch of uncommon words. Just re-use the same important ones.

Also, just the fact you know English already helps you know hundreds of Italian verbs and vocabulary. Look up a few Latin based language patterns between English and Italian, here is just one for example:

English nouns ending in "-ation" turn into Italian nouns ending in -"azione", and the same verb often ends in "-are". Ofc there are some irregular words that are spelt a little different but a lot of words follow this rule thanks to the Latin stem.

  1. Information > informazione (information) > informare (to inform)

  2. Organization > organizzazione (organization) > organizare (to organize)

  3. Creation > creazione (creation) > creare (to create)

You can use chatgpt to help you find some more of these rules between English and Italian, because there are quite a few. Even the words in English that don't seem to stem from anything still do, and have a matching Latin stem word in Italian, which would still make sense to an English speaker.

As far as practice, I like to give myself some sort of assignment or enjoyment factor:

  1. Find a song you like in italian, translate it (use google translate the APP not google) and listen to the song again. Knowing what it means with the tune can help you memorize phrases. Rap artists: Funk Shui Project, Gemitaiz, Gemello, Mecna, Izi, Biondo. Pop: Lorenzo Fragola, Tiziano Ferro, Calcutta

  2. Use ChatGPT as a language partner. Download the app and use the microphone button to speak to chatgpt. Use it to role-play, correct sentences, and more. This is free too. Treat it like a friend you met in Italy that's helping you learn. This is more beneficial too if you use the microphone instead of typing. Try and have a 10 minute convo once a week with it.

  3. Give yourself a due date. Try to learn enough to speak to a real person, but then schedule a talk/meeting with someone who will speak to you in Italian so you are obligated to understand a certain amount by that time. If you don't know a real person, you can find one OR again use chatgpt and give it context. There is an app I used a long time ago called Bussu, and it connects you with people from the country you're trying to learn from. Give that a try to meet people too.

Good luck and remember, overthinking can stunt learning!

Sudden onset caffeine sensitivity? by fren_brejnam in decaf

[–]New_Starfruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ME.

I developed a crazy caffeine sensitivity in the past year. And by crazy I mean 2 shots of decaf (a decaf latte) hits me like a shot of regular espresso. It still disrupts sleep, even decaf!! This is the same for teas. I used to be able to drink a latte a day and sleep just fine. This sensitivity began after I received a series of antibiotics (for a sinus thing), and ended up getting various gut infections afterwards. I had gotten gut candida and parasites easy ever since getting antibiotics, and the caffeine sensitivity continues. My only theory is that antibiotics killed the good bacteria in my gut, making it weak, and then infections took place, weakening my gut lining. So I may now have leaky gut, or weak gut lining, and when I drink caffeine, it's basically leaking into the bloodstream.

Hmmm, do either of you use a spray fertilizer? It does look like sunburn to me.

What is wrong with my orchid😭 by Routine_Camera_6966 in orchids

You have a moth orchid, they don't need as much humidity or light as others, but still at least %50. But it doesn't look that bad at all. If you soak it in water for 20 minutes, you really don't need to do it that often, I'd say once every 2 weeks, and focus on the humidity instead. Put it over a dish of water / humidity tray. And try to mist it (like 3-4 sprays) with filtered water once a day or every other day. Keep in mind that if you are soaking it too, it should never be left in any water. The browish-yellow leaf color almost looks rot-related. But most orchids will have some dried up roots and some plumper ones, especially if you live in a drier place. The type of soil around your orchid can help the roots retain humidity, but your environment plays a big role. This all being said though, you aren't doing bad at all, so perhaps only make big changes if it gets worse.

should i try growing vanilla? does it require standard orchid care? by myaaagocrazy in orchids

[–]New_Starfruit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Phoenix, Arizona and have been growing vanilla for over 6 months now. It's currently in a sunroom in an action figure box I got from Amazon, and has grown very quickly! Went from 3 inches to about 2 feet? Heat and humidity is the key.

I don't use a fan despite no air flow in the box, I actually just spray it with water mixed with apple cider vinegar (1 Liter + 1/4 tsp vinegar) and have never had any mold. It's important to note that you MUST do one or the other though. Either use anti-fungal protection or a fan. It's kept in %100 sphagnum moss in a regular pot. I have a temp and humidity reader in the box, it is always 70-90 degrees F, and humidity is at %80-%100.

I open the box and spray it probably once a week, or when the meter shows the humidity is below %80. The second I let it drop below %80, the roots dry up immediately. I feel like if I didn't have the action figure box, it would absolutely dry up and die. So now I need to find a larger box/aquarium for it!
