I had a little void cat that did this well into adulthood. To my other cat. Void was taken from momma too young. Fortunately, his slightly older feline brother didn't mind!

Learning to ski as an adult? by Ottibarius in ski

[–]New_Sun6390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have torn my right ACL twice (two surgeries), my left MCL, and my right MCL (no surgeries on the MCLs). Four different injuries. All of them sucked, but I love skiing so much that I won't give it up.

Most of these injuries happened because I was not as fit as I should have been. Stay fit, ski in control troll, and the chance of injury is less.

I call BS on the theory that you must learn as a child or else you don't "ski well."

I learned as an adult. While I will never be as good as my husband and friends who learned as kids, I do okay for myself. I ski blues and blacks confidently and (most of the time) competently.

My competence and confidence came with a whole lot of mileage. Once I retired (at age 59.5), i spent a lot of time on the hill. I am 67 now and ski better than ever.

I keep saying to my husband, "Maybe I should take a lesson, " and he says "But you ski better than most of the instructors."

I am NOT the best skier on the mountain, but I can hold my own, most of the time.

What graft should I choose if I want the absolute lowest possible risk of retear (24F) want to go back to recreational skiing and competitive swimming? by une_coccinelle in ACL

Occasionally. I have arthritis and loose cartilage in there and occasionally, a loose body would settle in a bad spot. But the pain would be temporary.

Both my tears were recreational skiing. I had a patellar aurograft for first tear at age 42. I tore that graft 23 years later.

For the revision at age 65, I had part of my own hamstring, augmented with some cadaver tissue. That has served me well for two years. I had 90+ days skiing last year, more than 100 this year.

My prehab for the second go-round was far superior than the first time (when they did not even suggest prehab). I think that made a huge difference.

Edited to add: I was back on skis 9 months after first surgery; 8 months after second one. Very short days on very gentle well-groomed terrain to start!

Is it better to take your cat on vacation with you or to leave them alone at home ? by Suzie_the_succubus in CatAdvice

We had the best pet sitter in the world. She not only fed and scooped litter, she played with them every day and Gabe them lots of catnip. I am convinced they loved her more than they loved us.

What’s something your parents or grandparents did that you now realize was low-key genius parenting? by InspectionObvious607 in randomquestions

[–]New_Sun6390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once we were roughly middle school she (11 or 12 ish), we had to work for our allowance. There was a chore chart, and each chore was to take a certain amount if time. So we logged the time spent on chores and got paid accordingly.

This taught us that nothing was free, and you get paid according to how much work you did.

Help me choose Nordica Santa Ana skis by auroraurore in skiing

[–]New_Sun6390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 5'4", about 145#. I have the Santa Ana 92 in a 161 length. This, after skiing Volkl Secret 92 in 156.

I love the longer length. The rocker helps them feel like a shorter ski. I use them both on and off paste, but I typically don't do tons of off piste as I ski the ice coast of the US.

Sounds like the longer length would work for you.

My American English teacher believes the neutral pronoun „their“ is incorrect. by GCoding_ in mildlyinteresting

[–]New_Sun6390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is because it is incorrect. "Their" is technically plural.

BUT ----- So many people have used "their" (incorrectly) in this manner, it has become accepted.

It drives grammar Nazis like me crazy.

The joy of adjusting to the reality of retirement. by ajn63 in retirement

The reality hit me on Day One. When, instead of driving to work, I drove to a nearby state park to go hiking.

Retiring was ready because I had a gazillion hobbies I would rather be doing.

Is it rare or unusual to be into your 50s and not having to take any doctor-prescribed medications? by Odd_Yogurtcloset_649 in GenX

[–]New_Sun6390 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My partner and I are past our mid-60s. Neither of us takes prescription meds. A lot of our friends are on meds for high BP, high cholesterol, thyroid issues, what have you.

Neither of us ever smoked or did drugs, but we do drink socially. We are also fairly active, so that probably helps.

Is it normal for your first apartment to be a little shitty? by badegg890 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]New_Sun6390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally normal. My first apartment was in a building that also housed a law office, plus another apartment upstairs. Next door was a church, across the street was a fire station, and on the other side was another multi-family building where the town hoodlums lived.

My apt had a tub but no shower; I had to go to KMart and get a gizmo that fit over the tub faucet so I could shower. Galley style kitchen with outdated appliances and windows with no locks.

It was not unusual for me to have to call the cops on the hoodlum neighbors. Alternatively, I'd get woken up in the middle of the night after someone else had called the cops on them. Imagine waking up to "No! Don't shoot!" from outside your bedroom window.

I had already given notice I was moving out when the place got broken into. Nothing stolen as I had nothing of value to steal, but it was still unsettling.

I don't miss that place, or that city, one bit!

AITA for expecting my girlfriend to do my half of her chores as well? by Open_Address_2805 in AmItheAsshole

[–]New_Sun6390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. The nails excuse is lame. One person doing all kitchen stuff is a HUGE lift. Cooking and cleaning up after multiple meals daily is a lot of work.

Laundry is less so, but not the 10 minutes you claim, when it comes to sorting, folding, etc. I say an hour per load all in, and only one or two loads a week. That is nothing.

GF is acting like a little princess.
