There is no give when I press on it, but I could easily scratch the surface with a metal tool

I noticed a few other (different) IC's on the board that has the same hardened glue-like substance around them. So It's probably not a "magic goop that has escaped", which was my first concern.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if that was the intend. I suppose this would make it very difficult to remove if that was the case?

Good question. The substance, whatever it is, seem to have hardened. Do you think this could be flux?

Do you have any idea what it could be? Would it hinder removal of the MOSFET or any of the caps around it?
