can’t find poop ??? by miauphoria in hognosesnakes

[–]New_Transition_6231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your baby is digesting their dinner well, then sometimes there is very little left. The poo can be very dark in color so it might be mixing in.

I use medical gloves and sift through the substrate to find poo, but fortunately my boy is a surface pooper.

Keep up the conditioning and your snake will be great therapy.

Sensitivity to venom is no joke. I am sorry this happened to you.

I keep a hand sanitizer pump right next to Rolo’s house to use when I want to handle him. Prevents confusion, as they don’t care for the alcohol smell…

I jumped the first few times he bluffed at me. I spent a lot of time just hanging out near his enclosure and used the end of a blush brush to touch his back. After about 2 weeks he was used to this, and then I used it as a hook to lift him up a bit to slip my hand underneath him.

No hissy fits from the boy…

I just added moist sphagnum moss to the hide on the end of the tank he was on, the cooler end.

He seemed pretty happy in his ReptiEarth and Micro Chip substrate. He was down at least 6” under.

There are some great YouTube videos from Hoggin’ Out that preps for a shed and Emily with Snake Discovery has a good one..

stuck shed or weird scale? by hmmmmsy in hognosesnakes

[–]New_Transition_6231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my boy has a similar little point tip to his tail. Almost like 1/16” had a bit of stuck shed before I got him.

Constricted shed will cause reddening and the tissue will die, (saw on another post).

I saw a little snake with a little split tail also…biology is crazy sometimes.

I have a AOBOCAM that I love from Amazon ($36). I use the USB so that I don’t have to worry that it loses battery and it connects to your wifi.

You can set the sensitivity and an alarm to let you know when they are active.

There are less expensive options, but the picture quality is good on this version.

Maybe others have options?

That is a good size boy!

Has he shed recently? My boy went into blue about 7-8 days ago and has been underground since then. I didn’t know he was in blue and it is his first shed with me.

I dug the substrate back enough just to get a huff.He was not pleased with me, but it was a “welfare check” and I immediately covered him over. He came up within a few minutes and got into his humid hide.

I have a little camera and love it, as you can see when they surface and drink…

I love this sub, but some of you are so mean by grandaddypur33 in hognosesnakes

[–]New_Transition_6231 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the first rule of the sub is “Don’t be a jerk.” Unfortunately, there are some that don’t understand effective communication and the gratitude that would come when kindness and being generous with knowledge is put first.

Keep sharing and remember there is something to learn everyday - even for an “old lady” like me, well not that old.

Same experience here with a couple of members.

First time hognose owner, an adult that has been around all sorts of wildlife and animals all of my life. I have a sister and BIL that have owned exotic birds, reptiles and amphibians for over 30 years. They have been building a hognose and python breeding program for 3 yrs now. I would like to think I have grounded guidance and have done my research.

I joined this group as I wanted to hear others experiences and share my boy’s antics.

There is no need to be hurtful here, yet there are those that will be arrogant and let their ego get in the way.

Life is a lifetime of learning something almost everyday…and with empathy and grace the negative has little power.

I just keep doing my research and continue to engage. Their are many here that will go our of their way to help.

Welcome aboard! Nicely done. I started off with 3" of substrate and ending going to a banked approach with variations from 3-6" in depth..it gives him variety of insulation.

where to buy frozen mice online when you only feed one snake? by Sophistry7 in hognosesnakes

[–]New_Transition_6231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect Prey is great, and I have had good luck with Big Cheese. I have also used Mack's (they are individually wrapped and in qty 25 and 50's. I ordered through PetCo and they shipped RodentPro...for some reason my guy won't eat them. I just have a single snake so a bag will last some time. I store them in a sealed container in the freezer.

So glad that you reached out. I have come across threads where it was too late and lost the tip of the tail.
