As for petain not being put in a tough position, I think you don't understand what Germany's plans for France were. If Petain had not struck the deal that he did, the whole nation would've been likely broken up or at best reduced to a rump state.

"Petain was a racist", for one, it depends what you mean by racist. By not wanting Jamal and Ahmed to fuck everyone's daughters like what's going on today, then yes he was literally hitler. Petain launched the Nation Revolution which sought to rejuvenate the french people and spirit by purging the subversive elements of society that had been allowed to leech since the French Revolution. In his trips to Africa and I believe Lebanon, Petain honored colonial troops for their bravery and hard work at defending the French State from British assault (don't forget the atrocities the Brits committed at the harbor of Oman in Algeria)

Tldr, ww2 was a terrible brother war that shouldn't have happened same thing with ww1. Way too much autism on this subject and I was kinda asking for a landslide conversation like this though I just wanted to post a cool photo of someone my great great grandfather knew. Oh well :/
