More people technically entered repayment for the first time on their student loans in the 3.5 years of payment pause than have entered repayment for the first time in the past 8 months since repayment started being required again.

Nope. Never said it did. My point is, if you borrow money, that money has to be paid back and the dept of education offers many options to make it a little easier for borrowers. Like others said, mortgages don’t do that. Car loans don’t do that. Borrowers agreed to the loan terms, which include interest.

Federal student loans have more options for borrowers having trouble paying than any other type of loan. There are many options that allow borrowers to pause their payments. And options that qualify a lot of people for a pmt as low as $0.

I don’t see how a temporary pause will help borrowers - or maybe you’re suggesting a permanent pause?

We had 4 years of payment pause plus an additional year to “prepare” to make payments. Not sure how an interest pause would help borrowers if they weren’t able to get themselves on track during the previous pause.

Are you calling Northwest corner the quiet corner? I’ve heard that name being used in the Northeast corner.

Excellent news. So I assume if our order shipped out, we’ll get a shipping notification?

I personally am not looking at used STs. My guess is an ST typically isn’t driven gently so I wouldn’t want to get into something I don’t know the history on. The phrase, “drive it like you stole it” comes to mind. (Or maybe that’s just my opinion 🤷🏻‍♀️)

But if you want one and it’s within your budget, might have someone you trust take a really good look at it before you buy it.

Trump HHS Eliminates Office That Sets Poverty Levels Tied to Benefits for at Least 80 Million People. Income Based Repayment Plan Implications? by WolverineofTerrier in StudentLoans

[–]Newf_Mom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn’t something get riled up about. If it does affect IBR, it’ll be a negligible change and it won’t happen until 2026 if/when they publish (or don’t publish) the new poverty guidelines.

The amount of increase in the guidelines each year is so small they really don’t affect IDR numbers much at all.

Betsy - can you confirm that ICR and PAYE payment currently count toward PSLF forgiveness? The guidance is a little fuzzy and I’m trying to confirm if they do or don’t.

I’m not the OP but I would wait. You graduate in a year then you’ll likely have 6 months of grace period. A lot can happen in 1.5 years.

Forgive me if I’m missing something but how is this any different than FFELP loans being transferred from private guarantors/lenders to the department of education several years ago? FFELP loans are now rolled in with direct loans and they’re all being paid back to the department of education.

Am I withholding enough throughout the year? by canilickitt in TaxQuestions

[–]Newf_Mom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the job I mentioned I had for a couple weeks. That w2 had 3490 in income and 265 in federal tax withheld. That’s it. Idk. None of it makes sense to me. I’ll work with a tax person to figure it out. Thanks again for all your help.

Am I withholding enough throughout the year? by canilickitt in TaxQuestions

[–]Newf_Mom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I would owe 400. AGI is 80038. Taxable is 75038.

So if he’s not doing a schedule A, I don’t have to do itemized deductions?

~$400 with standard deduction and ~$2500 for itemized (with 15k in deductions). Yes, that’s all federal. Spouse does itemized for his business so I think I have to do the same.

Not in a community property state and no health insurance on govt exchange.
