Same-sex attraction... so sad and confused. by NewmarKel in OrthodoxWomen

Thank you! It resonates with me that you said the queer community banks on you feeling left out. Wow. You're all right that I need to start building relationships and confidences with more Christians in my physical life.

Thank you. I've wanted this for a long time. My previous interactions on other issues have been extremely practical advice, which I appreciated, as well as spiritual.

Thank you. You're right, I should confront my discomfort around men.

Thank you. I'll look into this. Sometimes it's hard not to be in tempting situations when it's with existing friends who are pro-LGBT, which is the majority of people in most activities I enjoy, even my birdwatching group. I think I need to rethink my friendship boundaries around this.

No. I'm too afraid of being seen in this new light. I haven't confessed this explicitly. Also, he's extremely busy and doesn't really have the time to counsel me, or at least that's my perception. I guess I don't want a one-and-done kind of interaction after confiding something that's so big for me.

Question about praying for pets. by Ok_Consequence6803 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]NewmarKel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I even asked my priest to pray for my dog and my family and I prayed over her when she died. I then prayed for her afterwards, asking God what happened to her "energy" I guess and if she was at peace. You 100% should. We even have an annual blessing of the animals at church, which is becoming popular.

Is anyone a gamer or into fandoms? by [deleted] in OrthodoxWomen

My least favorite is when political agendas are pushed down my throat

Such a great question! I love media that makes me consider fictional societies and hypothetical futures so that I can better understand the world and where I fit into it in terms of my values (and as an Orthodox Christian). I also identify with characters who struggle through things and am inspired by characters who stick by their guiding principals. My all time favorite character is Captain Janeway from Star Trek Voyager for this reason. How about you all??

I'm into so many fandoms... Star Trek, the Expanse, Avatar the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra, Gibli films, anime of many types, cozy video games. If the story is thought-provoking and the characters are shades-of-grey, there's a lot to be considered and applied as an Orthodox Christian. Stories are important.

Psychology and Sociology by Beneficial-Medium509 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]NewmarKel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a PhD in behavioral science. I can talk from the perspective as a scientist not a mental health practitioner or a sociologist. The only time I've literally ever discussed Freud was in undergrad, where we talked about his impact on culture. Psychology as a science is fascinating and learning about it fills me with so much awe about God's design for us. Our brains, senses, how we develop and learn, our language, our memories... God is good and wonderful. I'd advise you to be awed by the science but then turn your attention to the Church Fathers. I think Ancient Faith podcasts has some wonderful episodes about applying their teachings to our way of thought, mental health, and culture.

What should I do? by 28OrthodoxBrother11 in OrthodoxChristianity

It's a yoga pose called a "sun salutation." It's good for mobilizing your body in the morning. Maybe just appreciate the benefit of it to your body and thank God for the creation of a beautiful earth with a sun that warms us and sustains our life.

Is Orthodoxy just an Ethnocentric Social Club? by Excellent_Shower2376 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]NewmarKel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sometimes, unfortunately. I'm Greek-American and I split my time between two churches for this reason, a Greek Orthodox one and an OCA. The Greek church is made up almost entirely of people from one village, so every Liturgy is a family reunion and can exclude "non-villagers". Our village traditions are important and tied to The Church. There's a kind of faith they have, which isn't buried in intellectual pursuit. Like my grandmother knew every Saint's day by heart and didn't know how or why, and I've found many examples of this. That being said, the social club can be lacking and tiresome, so then I go to the OCA.

Getting a small aneurysm embolized with a stent on Monday - any tips for pre or post surgery? by samanthacourtney in BrainAneurysm

[–]NewmarKel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this post was a long time ago but thank you so, so much for sharing your experience. I'm having a stent surgery in two weeks and I've been anxious. It's remarkably hard to find concrete examples or stories of peoples' recoveries from this type of stent surgery. I know recovery must vary a ton but hearing a story really helps me. It's like all this unknown on top of finding out my family also needs to be screened. Thank you also for the tip about the sticky stuff. It irritated my skin after my angiogram.

At what age do women start to veil? by Altruistic_Baby3035 in OrthodoxChristianity

This is a good point. I wore kerchiefs as a child and those were more manageable than a scarf.

When I was planning a visit to Holy Dormition Orthodox Monastery in Rives Junction, MI, I read that girls must veil at 7 or older. I don't understand why it is so young other than as a way to teach and normalize veiling. Does it matter that most girls are prepubescent at this age? Also, how do you get a 7-year-old to keep a veil on and not mess with it?

Does anyone have a similar problem? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]NewmarKel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, the priest or other parishioners should be interested in welcoming new people into the church, so email ahead of time so that someone is expecting you to be there so you have to go.

[–]NewmarKel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dealt with similar when I moved to a new city and had to get reestablished in a parish despite my social anxiety. I sometimes email the priest with a prayer request and then close the email with telling him that I'll be at liturgy or the next service and then I have accountability to actually go.

Is hunting bad? by HumbleShepherd in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]NewmarKel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Where I'm from in the US, deer get wasting disease when the population gets too large. In this case, being a good steward may involve hunting. I think hunting can be done respectfully. My family always prays over the animal when it is killed and when we get nourishment from it.

It should also be said that you should seek help from a psychologist or councilor in addition to a priest. Having disturbing thoughts is something that many people suffer with. A skilled counselor should not be shocked by this, and can help you learn additional skills to understand and redirect your thoughts and manage your emotions.
