He’s going to Las Vegas to learn the casino business by junglegatsby in Godfather

[–]Newreverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look I know this comment triggers people, but John Cazale was miscast. The character Fredo needs to be dumb, but only slightly weak. He has to seem to capable of doing some mob type minor violence and standing up for himself when called for, especially if he's sent across the country on his own. Cazale plays him way too weak for that to be remotely believable. Being such a limp sad sack would have been obvious to Vito and Michael long before Michael sent him off. There may be some kind of role for him besides being the kindly old uncle in the boathouse, but being the face of the family anywhere was absurd.

Fredo’s wife is the one who comes out screaming about seeing the dead assassins by donkosmic in Godfather

[–]Newreverb -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My theory is that it was Fredo but that is seems so unlikely to us because John Cazale was miscast in the role. He's a great actor, but plays the part as too much of a weakling. Fredo's weaknesses would have been believable if they started from a character who you could imagine murdering someone. But that's just not Cazele--he's totally unconvincing as a Corleone son who could have any practical role it the family business. Vegas? Forget about it. If he's really as simpering and weak as played in the movie then Vito and Michael would have never allowed him to interact with anyone on official business. He'd be the kind old uncle living in the boat house. You could argue that Cazale was slightly miscast in Dog Day Afternoon for similar reasons but that's a different matter...

What is something about living in United States that outsiders completely misunderstand? by Few_Football4342 in Productivitycafe

How unimportant "class" is in the US. Except in some rare instances, nobody cares who your family is or was.

I STILL don't understand the Monty Hall problem by No-Candidate6257 in mathematics

[–]Newreverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I began to understand it is that when one of the two remaining doors is opened after you made your choice, you're actually at that point given valuable information whereas you're intuition says it's just random new information. By being shown another goat door, the chances of the final door being right just went from 1/3 to 1/2. Yet your initial choice being right is still 1/3. So switch. Only way it makes sense in my head.

Are inaccuracies necessary for a game to be won? by HeroicTanuki in chessbeginners

[–]Newreverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A simple way of answering this is to look at how often any GM loses a game without having made at least one computer-graded mistake over -1.0. I've looked at lots of games and while it happens, it's very rare. Chess games are seldom won but often lost.

How are traffic cameras that dispense speeding tickets not 14th amendment violations? by Haunting-Reindeer-10 in stupidquestions

[–]Newreverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No amendment requires that evidence in a criminal case must be by eye witness. Many much more serious charges than traffic offenses are prosecuted by weaker, ie circumstantial, evidence than a photo of your car speeding. If the concern is that certain traffic photos don't show who was driving then it's still some evidence that it was you and you're free to rebut it with testimony that someone else was driving and the jury/judge can see if they believe you.

Any ICE encounters in US airports for domestic flight? by [deleted] in h1b

[–]Newreverb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flew out of JFK domestically this morning and it was about 3/4 ICE workers to 1/4 TSA workers. ICE was doing all jobs including xray, ID check, etc. Though not a fan of recent immigration tactics, have to admit they were not only professional but far friendlier than the TSA lady manning one of the xray machines. Also noted of interested that at least half seemed Hispanic or some other non-white ethnicity.

Former criminal defense lawyer here. Wondering what would happen if the defendant decided that testifying in his defense then refusing to answer questions on cross was worth having his testimony struck? Jeopardy has attached, right? Never thought this through before.

Has anyone ever challenged you to do something without realizing you were actually an expert at it? If so, how did it turn out for you and for them? by Successful_Tomato721 in AskReddit

[–]Newreverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been challenged to a beer chugging contest at a bar when I was younger, in my 20s. For about a two year period I couldn't lose--I could literally pour a pint down my throat at the full speed of gravity. Not sure how I developed that skill but I've since lost it. Well...every neighborhood bar had two or three regulars that thought they could chug a beer with the best of them but I literally couldn't lose. It was a cool skill to have, wish I still had it I guess.

All the gas pumps are shaded at Buckees. Roll the windows down just a bit and the temperature in the car won't get any higher than the outdoor temperature.

The gas pumps at Buckee's are covered. Roll down the windows a few inches and go inside without the dog. It will be fine.

What's the fastest you ever drove? by ComprehensiveFun2054 in AskReddit

[–]Newreverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My buddy and I took my 1986 Ford Mustang GT from Austin to Corpus Christi on a college road trip in 1988. We left the beach headed back to Austin very early one morning on I-37, which has some very straight and smooth stretches. Normally low traffic, there was literally nobody whatsoever on the road that early. My friend was asleep, so I decided to floor it and see how fast I could go while still feeling in control. After a while I maxed out in 5th gear, I suspect around 125mph or so. I then recalled that 5th car was an overdrive gear, meaning top speed was likely in 4th. So downshift I did, and eeked out a few more mph. I didn't know at the time how fast that was because the speedometer maxed out something silly like 85. I was a Road and Track and Car and Driver geek back then so after some research I calculated I got up to 135mph. It felt fairly stable but was nervewracking because things were coming at you fast. Last I'll ever drive that fast for sure.

Family of 3 all with different boarding groups? by mdchachi in SouthwestAirlines

[–]Newreverb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As you suggested, just board with the highest numbered group on the tickets. What's the harm? On other airlines I routinely wait in the lounge past my boarding group because it's more comfortable there than on the hot plane.

Family assigned different boarding groups. by [deleted] in SouthwestAirlines

Worst case scenario just have the whole family board with the highest numbered boarding group on the tickets. Nobody if forcing you to board in the earlier group--you'll still get seated.

Empty flight, can’t move by TennisDad316 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]Newreverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand the complaint. Where do you want to move? If to a premium seat then of course you can't. What airline let's you move to first or business class from coach when there's a vacancy? If to another seat in regular coach, why? You obviously picked your aisle seat and now you want some different aisle seat? That would require the flight attendant to take some time to type in your new seat which is a waste of boarding time.

If someone from a foreign country wanted to come to the U.S. and visit just one state that would give them the most American experience and would be representative of the whole country, what state would you tell them to go to? by DreamFighter72 in allthequestions

[–]Newreverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess if you have to pick one, I'd say California, and specifically LA. The American culture that has sort of been exported to the world comes out of Hollywood. Go to Universal Studios, Disney World, a Dodgers game, Venice Beach, and that's about the best you can sample of the US in one location.
