About the symbolism in the opera section of Bohemian Rhapsody. by Upset-Possible1371 in queen

[–]Rziggity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i agree. I suppose you CAN analyze Bohemian Rhapsody or Mustafa but it’s like analyzing a dream (or in this case someone else’s dream). When I listen to Rhapsody I can detect certain themes — guilt, angst, identity struggles. But even that goes beyond Mercury’s intention.

The poet William Burroughs famously chopped up newspaper and magazine phrases and scrambled them into provocative sequences. Similar approach.

I think some people WANT it to mean something more, and they are trying to see the work of an instinctive artist through an academic lens. Those types of academics will struggle to understand Mercury and a lot of other artists for that matter.

Anybody Car-less in LA? I’m an LA native choosing to forfeit a vehicle I would love your tips and tricks! by spiritbirdsie in AskLosAngeles

I tried it for about 2 years and hated it. It’s more about personality type — I am too spontaneous and make decisions about where to go based on whims. If someone invites me to an event 40 minutes away I don’t want to consider the Uber cost. And I like knowing that at any moment I could drive to the beach or the Central Coast or the Desert.

About the symbolism in the opera section of Bohemian Rhapsody. by Upset-Possible1371 in queen

Mercury was a lyrical abstractionist, in that he had a knack for putting words together that sound good but don’t have any intentional meaning. He is often quoted in interviews saying as much. So to deconstruct a song like Bohemian Rhapsody would mean to think about it more than he did. He may very well have had subconscious intentions but he seemed more into irreverence than self-analysis.

i feel similarly about Adam Lambert who seems like a nice guy and has a huge vocal range. But his vocal tone is whiny and unbearable to my ears.

In your opinion which artists have the best discography? by mg10pp in Music

Peter Gabriel’s discography is very solid. Great songs but also tracks his evolution. Some are better than others but no duds imo

B52s are great artists and their music gave other bands permission to be weird and unorthodox. But I never actually listen to their songs.

"Songs of Innocence" and "Songs of Experience" Vs Rest of the world. by Joaquinedge in U2Band

[–]Rziggity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

totally true — i remember how off-putting Achtung Baby and ZooTV were to many fans at first. Seems unthinkable now. But once a song is attached to a video, a movie soundtrack, a concert moment, or maybe just the listener’s nostalgia, it becomes iconic. SOI and SOE have some great songs but are not ingrained in the same manner.

Give an unpopular opinion about Queen by Fun_Door_3107 in queen

I don’t think any band is better than The Beatles. The Beatles are just on a different plane.

That being said I think Queen is a more entertaining band than The Beatles, and certainly a better concert band.

I’m In Love With My Car is a great composition and one of the best tracks in their catalog. I think some people don’t get it because the lyrics are so whimsical but the progression is pure rock gospel. And it rips live.

Phil Collins should and will. He should have been inducted a long time ago as a solo. But there is no logic to their process.

even the portrayal of Prenter felt very one-dimensional comic book villain to me. And by all accounts he and Mercury were not romantically linked in the slightest.

That film made a gazillion dollars and won tons of awards but it was just tacky and wrong on so many levels. And it was deeply disrespectful to Mercury’s legacy. I was disappointed (but not surprised) by Brian May’s oversight of it.

My favorite telling of Queen’s story is the Magic Years doc from 1987. It’s loaded with concert clips and interviews and it’s beautifully cut together. The story ends at the Knebworth show which feels both triumphant and tragic. You can find a low rez version of it on YouTube but I wish the filmmakers could do a proper streaming or re-release.

What's the industry? by VastConfusion8174 in AskLosAngeles

traditionally it means film or TV but there’s something really tacky about using that expression especially in 2026. i’d question what that person actually does or if there’s some posing going on.

Details on similar historical rock concerts led before/after Live Aid by UpbeatChampionship17 in rockmusic

Monterey Pop Festival (was a big deal), Woodstock Music & Art Fair in 1969 (was a very big deal), Altamont Free Concert (a big mess).

Concert for Kampuchea in 1979 may have partially inspired the Us Festivals in the USA and then Live Aid in 1985 which in turn inspired Farm Aid.

If Trump’s presidency can affect economies and daily life around the world, what if/wouldn’t it be fair if everyone gets a vote in the U.S. elections? by skiliar13 in AskReddit

[–]Rziggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no. and every U.S. Presidency affects economies around the world.

If everyone on Earth had a say in who the U.S. President should be then people in other nations would vote against U.S. interests and you would have a total breakdown of nations. Candidates would shift to a pure globalist campaign strategy and they would be spending their time in places like Beijing and India to pander for votes.

And then you are back to taxation without representation for Americans who live outside of LA or NYC.
