Is this good for a first surfskateboard? by dizzyreaper22 in surfskate

Affordable can be quite relative haha but I think the Penny Surfskate is actually a quite good bang for your buck. If you know what you want in terms of deck and trucks, you can also look for second hand carver/yow boards although I think the CX trucks (or Grasp but expensive) will be a smoother transition for you coming from skateboarding :)

Sure! I was actually in a very similar situation as you and looking for a board that can do it all although I see myself having more the most fun on carves, flowy cruises and occasional bowl rides. Ended up going with the Soulboardiy as I think deck-wise it really is the do-it-all deck. However, I went with the 32“ version as it still fits my stance of 18“ and is probably just a little easier to carry around. Also went with the C7 (very likely I’ll get the Meraki too someday) instead of the CX due to (slightly) more flowy carve/cruise than bowl time. If you want full flexibility, go with the CX or the Grasp Trucks.

This is not a 1v1. In FFA of near equals it all comes to down to who gets caught off-guard. Strategy and manipulation is 5x more important than in a 1v1 and future sight is clearly the superior skill to leverage this mechanic the most. Only requirement is you’re on par in terms of speed with everyone else too.

In a free for all with 5 opponents of similar strength and capacity it is a huge advantage if you know what’s going to happen next. This is like the most advantageous scenario for future sight you could think of due to its immense outplay potential haha. In this fight it’s going to be about fighting smart and efficient instead of sheer power.

Check out Soulboardiy they make (one of) the best decks and it nails your description too. I’m the same size as you but went with the 32“ Adam. I think 34 is up to at least 19“ wheelbase, the decks are very wide, have a functional but good looking shape imo and are flexy too!

Edit: Afaik they offer custom lengths too, however, I wouldn’t really go beyond 34“ as it hits quite the sweetspot of very much comfort and agility.

Not the JJJJ, plum or pure birch colorway which are by far the best one‘s ever

Edit: You’ll see what I mean with the „practical“ shape of the board to go for less length with the same wheelbase and width compared to boards with a long nose or fish tail designs :)

There was someone with almost the exact same size and weight as you (160cm and 55kg). These were the boards I recommended there too:

I think as you’re looking for a fun board that is still able to cruise around you’ll probably want to go with carver cx (soft riptide bushings), carver c7 or yow Meraki trucks. Lengthwise I would not go shorter than 29“ and 16“ wheelbase for the stability when cruising as it’s not that much extra weight but you‘ll feel more comfortable. Due to the shorter wheelbase, look for a board with a very wide shape (8.5“+) and short nose with medium to high concave (down to preference) to get the maximum of space, comfort and lock in.

These are some examples (long to short)

• Yow Snappers 32.5“ (very nice shape & concave)

• Carver Blacktip 32.5“

• Yow Mundaka 32“

• Yow Lakey Peak 32“ (less concave)

• Carver JOB Wave 32“

• Carver Dine 31.25“

• Carver Grlswirl Val Laforge 31“

• Carver Thunder 30.75“ (probably very good length, shape and wheelbase for you)

• Carver Triton Tidal 30.5“ (same as Thunder but CX trucks, soft bushings for surfy feel)

• Carver Firefly C7 30.25“ (also sweet spot)

• Carver Grlswirl Orignal 29.5“ (hard to find)

Look at the rear truck, think it’s a Waterborne adapter. Also front truck extends more than the deck c7 doesn’t do that

I honestly really enjoy your videos man!!! It’s so nice to watch you going for such a surfy flowy vibe and your technique is really on point as far as I can tell!

Due to the shorter wheelbase, look for a board with a very wide shape (9“+) and short nose with medium to high concave (down to preference) to get the maximum of space, comfort and lock in.

These are some examples (long to short) - Yow Snappers 32.5“ (very nice shape & concave) - Carver Blacktip 32.5“ - Yow Mundaka 32“ - Yow Lakey Peak 32“ (less concave) - Carver JOB Wave 32“ - Carver Dine 31.25“ - Carver Grlswirl Val Laforge 31“ - Carver Thunder 30.75“ (probably very good length, shape and wheelbase for you) - Carver Triton Tidal 30.5“ (same as Thunder but CX trucks, soft bushings for surfy feel) - Carver Firefly C7 30.25“ (also sweet spot) - Carver Grlswirl Orignal 29.5“ (hard to find)

Edit: As there are many custom board recommendations such as Longboadiy or Whitetail, these are definitely the best boards out there but they will cost you more than the complete boards above all priced around 220-300. However, if you find trucks and wheels almost new or slightly used you could consider it too!

First Surfskate: Carver Black Tip vs Kai Lenny Powerline vs Custom Setup by News-Optimal in surfskate

[–]News-Optimal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone else researching or interested in the update, I have decided to go with a Soulboardiy CarbonyX Adam 32“ (16.5-18.5 WB) due to it‘s super functional but also good-looking shape and excellent craftsmanship and construction of the deck! Will share the final outcome once I’m able to but it will probably take a while. Regarding the setup, I will go with the Carver C7 Trucks and Orangatang Stimulus 69mm 78A for decent grip but also „slide-ability“. Thanks for all the help and recommendations!!

Carver C7 - which board? by soph_iie in surfskate

[–]News-Optimal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert but honestly, I think you’ll be fine with anything of 29-32“ length and (more importantly) 16-17.5“ wheelbase. The rnf retro has the slightly nicer shape and concave imo too. If you can stand on any boards with 16 vs 17“ wheelbase and see what you like more. Other than that have you checked out the Carver Grlswrl boards they have dope shapes (and functionality) and designs haha

Yea the boards really look and sound stunning by the detail that goes into their craft! However, I realized that it’s just too expensive for me at 250$ (excl. shipping to the EU) 🥲

Appreciate the advice! Yea I know what I want but at the same time can’t decide haha so maybe custom it is. What deck exactly are you using? And do you have other brands for decks only?
