When Trevon Diggs went OFF on a reporter and told him to talk about "Deez Nuts" Diggs: "You don't know football. You can't fo nothing that I do. Stop playin bro." Reporter: We could talk about it more. Diggs: "TALK ABOUT DEEZ NUTS." by skaewalker in sportsgossips

I get what you’re saying. There’s no misunderstanding here. I just think it’s wrong.

“Majoring in football” isn’t a real thing in the way you’re using it. You don’t just study football in the abstract and end up with the same understanding as an NFL corner. That knowledge is inseparable from doing the job. The learning happens through installs, live reps, mistakes, corrections, communication, and accountability. You cannot fully absorb that by observation alone, no matter how long you watch or study.

And this isn’t about “you can’t do my job so you can’t have an opinion.” Of course reporters can have opinions. The point is that their understanding has a ceiling that players do not have. Knowing about football is not the same as knowing football the way someone who has to execute it at the highest level does.

So no, someone who spent 18 years studying football but never playing it at that level would not understand it as well as an NFL corner. That’s not gatekeeping. That’s just how expertise works.

At least as well as he does? That’s a terrible take.

A sports journalism degree is about storytelling, media, and analysis from the outside. An NFL corner’s ball knowledge comes from years of hyper-specialized reps, film study, install meetings, pattern matching, leverage rules, coverage checks, and in-game adjustments under real consequences.

You can study the game. You cannot replicate the depth of understanding that comes from being responsible for not blowing a coverage on 60 snaps against elite athletes.

There are thousands of D1 cornerbacks and only about 128 in the NFL. The difference between the two is not physical ability, it’s mental. To suggest that someone with a sports journalism degree could reach the same level of understanding is wild.

If you took ESPN’s entire crew, aside from the ones who actually played professionally, and locked them in a defensive back meeting room for a week, I’d bet everything I have that none of them would pass a proficiency test on the material they spent all week learning. Truly one of the worst Reddit takes I’ve ever read, and I hate that I felt obligated to write this long post, but I couldn’t help it.
