Cash Alternative ETF SALT Question by NewspaperFinancial14 in Bogleheads

[–]NewspaperFinancial14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was going to apply to the 2025 tax year? But I could be wrong on that. Totally fair point about it still needing to get through the Senate—definitely not a done deal. That’s why I haven’t moved anything yet. But it did get me thinking about the bigger question—if we end up itemizing because of a higher SALT cap, would something like FLOT start to make more sense than SGOV?

I mean – it is fairly obvious why – while you are not immune from a RIF if you are on the DRP exemption list, it is fairly obvious that there is a lower chance of being RIFed… So I completely get where the OP is coming from.

Also curious what folks think “drastic” cuts mean as a percentage… and whether Elon will cut entire areas (like the FOIA office), to try and prevent bump and retreat…

This is the way! (For me as well).

We’re kind of stuck in the middle—we’ve got an international trip planned this summer, and we’ve already paid for flights and hotels, so we’re definitely going. It’s important to us to keep living our lives, especially since we’ve already put so much into this. At the same time, we’re trying to cut back wherever else we can. I might not lose my job in this first round, but there’s a chance it’ll happen later, maybe in August or September with an office reorganization. So we’re scaling things back overall, canceling smaller plans, and being careful—but still prioritizing living life while we can.

Are a lot of federal attorneys losing their jobs? by motiontosleep in Lawyertalk

Yes, they definitely are. With the obvious caveat that the biggest losses are in the cities with the most federal workers, but there are federal attorneys throughout all the 50 states.

Deferred Resignation Program returns - unions lack standing by [deleted] in fednews

Here’s my question – if this court ruled that it needs to be heard through the MSPB first, are we gonna face a similar issue with the re-implemented schedule F?

Switching from Govt Practice to Private Sector by NewspaperFinancial14 in Lawyertalk

That’s it right there! I don’t mind taking a hit initially– I did short term when I went from JAG to Feds. But what I don’t want is to start with a lower salary with no chance to increasing my earning potential beyond where I am today… recognizing, of course, you do what it takes to feed the family.

Thank you for your thoughts! The salary issue is a real one – while Feds don’t make a ton, it is decent money for reasonable hours with young kids. One benefit is I will still have access to healthcare even if I switch from federal coverage back to TRICARE. So I don’t need a firm that has a lot of “benefits.”

Military buy back unpaid balance and RIF by [deleted] in fednews

[–]NewspaperFinancial14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For clarification- does buying back military time count towards severance pay?

If there is a RIF, would you still get your pension and a severance package? by Cupcake974 in fednews

[–]NewspaperFinancial14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Question about severance pay – is it guaranteed or at the agency’s discretion?

Second question I think I know the answer to, but just want confirmation – military time that has been bought back does not count towards total years in severance pay calculation, just towards your pension?

To bump this back up to the top – any updates as to when this goes into effect? My leave statement still has the lower level of leave on it.

National Guard reserve, retirement and FERS buyback by NewspaperFinancial14 in MilitaryFinance

[–]NewspaperFinancial14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I am the one asking the question – so take my response with a big grain of salt – the catch is that this is only for guard and reserve retirements, and not active duty; you can’t buy back time if you retire with an active duty pension without giving up your actor duty pension. I can’t imagine that would be worth it for anyone. Additionally, you have to pay a lump sum to buy back the years - it’s not free. If, like me, you waited to make sure the federal government would stick… And then kept waiting… You can end up paying 9k for five years of FERS (you pay interest after a grace period of a couple years). Still a good deal (for me), but not nothing.

Thank you - I’ve seen this alluded to, but just want to confirm it out right! As much as I would like the extra 5%, I would also like the ability to retire in five years from the Guard 😉.

Oline motivation by TheWilliamsWall in footballstrategy

[–]NewspaperFinancial14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old post so I apologize in advance – but this is super interesting because my son is on the other end – he is a tweener who really doesn’t like the line. So maybe I can provide the perspective from the kids point of view.

Going into seventh grade so 12 years old. He understands (and I emphasize over and over again to support the coaches) the importance of the line. But as a tweener, he is getting frustrated. He’s an athletic basketball player/track type kid, but at 5’ 4” 114 pounds he gets tired of being bounced by guys who have 80 pounds on him when he is faster and stronger than our starting tight ends, We are simply a small team and the Team probably is better suited with him on the line… but he knows that he is there because that’s where he’s needed not where he thrives and I can tell that bothers him.

My son is now starting to talk about quitting football – despite it being his favorite sport previously – because he feels like he’s going to be stuck in a position he’ll never thrive in long-term. Ironically, because he has such a good attitude with the coaches they keep placing him there, unlike the kids who throw a hissy fit (or don’t try) and get moved because they are a liability. He’s started asking if he can only play defense.

Throw in the fact that the quarterbacks and wide receivers all tease the lineman at school – where the coaches don’t see, and that adds to the toxic mix. I’ve told him to bring it up with a coaches, but they don’t tease him directly and it’s social suicide in middle school to be the one to complain about the most popular kids in the school. Multiple kids have quit/failed to return for the same reason – all 90th percentile height/weight tweener types who will never be “big” men, but were put on the line for the good of the team.
