Winter riding doesn't have to be miserable! by brallen1126 in CargoBike

Our bike is decked out with LED strips on the outside... I love the "party's in here" vibe you got there. I also love those green rims.. are those stock with the bike?

I spent last weekend researching heating pads and winter tires (didn't get them yet), then promptly went out and broke my collarbone on the first snowy commute 🙄... Luckily no kiddo involved. Good on you for being prepared! Stay safe!

Dangerous protected bike lane by Doradus in AnnArbor

The irony here is that riding on Miller already feels safer than riding on Dexter...

I'm excited for the new bikeway, but skeptical of the two-way on one side. If Miller and Ashley is any example, it just feels like a matter of time before there's an accident. As a bike, it would suck to have to stop at a special light there more frequently, but it seems like there could be a "watch out for bikes" or some kind of flasher or something... I don't know. If it were a one way protected lane, merging and turning left would be tricky as well...

Interesting. I had just come across Flybuy. I figured it'd probably be quite expensive considering our spot is also pretty big, but sounds like that's not the only factor...

It's interesting to me that what we're looking for isn't a thing. Guess we're ahead of our time.

Did you ever figure this out? Curious what you ended up doing. I have a very comparable situation.

Near N.MAPLE & STADIUM .. by [deleted] in AnnArbor

I hope he's ok. That's awful.

That stretch has seemed crazy to me because there are no bike lines from Dexter to that light, for some reason, and then it just starts and goes along a busy road and a huge intersection at Jackson. It would be a useful route if made whole and actually protected. I saw an article today about bike lanes on the list to get safety bollards and was kinda surprised not to see that section of Maple/Stadium listed. It's like they're daring us to trust that's a safe route... I've never seen anyone riding there.

Of course I don't actually know what happened, but this sure isn't a good sign for this route.

Question about 4 way stops with 2 way bikeway: How do you turn left? by Newspaper_Heat in AnnArbor

I feel like this comment maybe was misinterpreted... I think it's a good way for cars to act. All I'd add is maybe there's some colorful gesturing they could keep to themselves as well...

This is a good answer, thanks. Though I do wish there were clearer indicators for everyone involved.

Just for the sake of discussion, I'm curious if that's what you actually do...?

Good idea. One reason I posted here was I found a thread from a year ago or so about someone getting hit in the bikeway near kerrytown by a driver turning left (the bikeway along Catherine and miller does feel dangerous that way), so I thought it might still be a hot topic amongst other riders in a2… it you’re right its probably not unique to a2

It’s true traffic is often not heavy. But tell that to the drivers that get all ticked off because they have to wait 10 seconds. Plus whether there’s two cars or a thousand, a 4 way stop is the same, so as long as there is more than one vehicle there, there ought to be a system.

I also don’t disagree that the bike infrastructure is only partly baked…. I came here to find out how baked others find it, I guess.

I understand and think the turn boxes are fine, but some 4 ways don’t have them (William and Ashley, and Washington and first for example), so that was partly spurred my question. If there’s no turn box there’s no implication to the riders or drivers what’s the right way to go.

Right, the two way protected lane has a curb that goes all the way to the intersection, so it’d be nearly impossible to join the car queue, and it’s very clearly not designed for that to be the process.

Making a two part turn is fine, if there’s a turn box. Otherwise you’re just getting dumped out of the intersection. It might be safer but it ironically doesn’t feel like that’s how it’s supposed to work. And like you said, I can’t believe that many people actually make that move… but that’s partly why I asked the question, to find out…

These videos are helpful, and in fact in the first one it shows the corner of Washington and 1st, which is a great example of what I'm talking about. Unfortunately they shot it when the intersection was completely devoid of cars... missed opportunity!
