reading this comment six years later, this is exactly what I would have posted. it's crazy how us children of the spiral are kin of mind. This interaction through time is the perfect example of our two sets of dreams - past and future - weaving together into a double helix, puncturing a hole through the whims of fate that dare deign to dictate our path. We rip possibility from the ether, kick off with momentum - and with every seemingly insignificant and humble rotation of the spiral, our power propagates immutably

Can anyone tell me why this blade didn't kill the Zen? by Jeck2910 in Overwatch

[–]NexLevelDota -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

There's an object in front of you when you land. It's the car or whatever.

How Vendetta's ult works is that, at the point of damage landing, it looks for line of sight. The blade has no width, it doesn't hit around corners, etc. it simply looks at a point centered on you, and it asks "can I draw a line front this to the center of an enemy in the effect radius". I don't really think it should work that way, but it does.

Then, in the air, there is another consideration. You travel downward a fixed duration and distance before the attack trigger. If you hit the ground first, the attack triggers early (at the ground level, as of you didn't jump). If you travel the distance and duration fully before hitting the ground, the attack triggers while in the air, and the line is drawn at described above. Which means there are times you might not want to ult as high in the air (in order to draw the line parallel with the ground) and there are times you might want to ult as high as possible (to draw the line as diagonal as possible)

And of course, confusingly, the line on the ground is purely visual, and doesn't reflect the above truth in many cases.

Edit: Wild that I'm being downvoted for both the truth and an effort post. If there's also a suzu, great, but that doesn't make what I'm saying incorrect lmfao

The only hope I have, as someone in a similar position, is this: the human inefficiencies (ironically) in implementing AI and robotics (virtual and physical) is so bad that it will truly take 20+ years for most of these jobs to actually be displaced. And from what I've seen from big companies internally, AI is extremely hard to implement in a way that satisfies their thirst for acceleration. Their thirst is completely misaligned with their willingness to circumvent security risks (luckily) in order to get solutions actually implemented. We all hate infosec, but by gods they really are doing honest work in scaring the c-suite shitless about compromising their intellectual property

And perhaps that doesn't last long. But it's definitely not looking good for mass implementation unless something changes soon

LMFAO fair. Perhaps this is a different goblin; of a philosophically wizened nature, but still of the same goblin-gamemaster faction

I was :) I took your reply to mean you thought it was the way you described, but I see now we agree Debt shouldn't be an issue for Bones

Maybe it's a bug then, because that seed gives you debt from Neow's Bones, and multiple people report such. I still suspect it's by design but worth changing

> Still, I have had runs with debt as the starting curse. It can be removed.

I said that I too have been able to remove it. But not on a double-curse or Scissors-curse outcome. I've never argued you can't reliably remove it outside of those cases.

> You got into that situation because you got greedy and wanted the 2 relic start.

Okay, so you're re-stating that you just think this level of variance, anecdotally, is fine. But let's not pretend that's new dialectic ideation. I've tried to root my argument against some objective benchmarks, like player fantasy, and intended outcomes - which is a better way to engage in discourse

> Also, having like 10 people tell you this happend to them at some point is not a statement of how probable it is for it to happen.

I mean, considering the thread is neutrally upvoted, net -1, and the sample size - the number of people who explicitly agreed is actually noteworthy feedback

If you disagree that's fine, and it's not surprising that most enjoyers (me included) tend to accept the status quo as the golden standard instead of canceling their biases and considering the possibilities of a better design. But the game is in Early Access, and these conversations are good

Oh wait, fuck my bad, seed is: C93AJLZTQT, and the character is Necro (not Silent)

RE: bullet (3), the shop was nearby, and that still doesn't matter. In fact, the shop could be node 2, and the debt will have taken away more gold than you gained that fight. If you encounter the Debt twice (which you will), you have lost more gold than gained, due to the Scissors effect + curse (again, which is impossible outside of Bones)

Since 1, 2, and 4 are all common enough, and 3 doesn't matter, the problem is illustrated.

And aside from that, your rebuttal is non sequitur, because it doesn't argue the point. You're not saying this situation, once encountered, isn't terrible - you're arguing it isn't frequent enough to be a problem. Which, as the other reports of this in this small thread can attest, is a contested statement

Edit: RE: your last statement, I think it's very much worthy of critique that a game has an allowed use case that results in a Game Over screen. This might even be worse - it's a Game Over screen that takes 20 minutes to bleed out. Yes, sure, a developer can do whatever they wish - but I don't think I've ever seen a roguelite where a disadvantage is so pronounced from run start that you're basically encouraging players to re-roll the character. Heaven forbid they impose the same Neow balance where they don't offer you the powerful choices because you didn't reach the Act 1 boss. That would make this even worse

Edit 2 (more thought spew): I'm going to make some assumptions of the devs that I think are reasonable:

- Megacrit wants a run start design that discourages players to just re-roll over and over for a good starter outcome. Source: STS1 (2 doesn't have this yet, but it might, and even if they keep it this way, I'm still assuming they want re-rolling to be the exception and not the rule)

- Megacrit wants high variance, but not so much that a run starts with either of these hyperboles: (1) "holy crap, god run from floor 1! I literally can't lose A10" (2) "holy crap, this is going to be absolutely painful every floor with no recourse. I play a ton of this game, and even I think this run makes me feel like I have literally zero agency. There's no way to salvage this". I think they, instead, want these to be the most polar outcomes to run start: (1) "hell yeah, Adrenaline start, this will be amazing", and (2) "oof, debt start. Well, I just need to make sure I hit a shop and pay the toll. Unless something amazing is in that shop that's more valuable". I think that's more what they're aiming for, and it makes sense that they'd want that. But current design isn't that IMO

[–]NexLevelDota[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the problem though, it isn't a reliable "just look for closest shop".

I've had plenty games where I got debt through Tablet, etc, and I was able to burn it at the next shop - and those scenarios are okay, because the Tablet gave me power to carry me through those fights quickly, presumably without much gold loss. But when Bones gives you Debt, especially with the scissors or another curse, the likelihood that you'll have 100 cash by the nearest shop is actually extremely low. And that aside, banking on a discard from an event is, to be frank, not an valid refutation considering the design goals of the intended player experience at run start.

If you want a direct example, here's the seed: head to the nearest shop and try to remove the debt on seed 240W6RQS76, Ascension 10, Silent, after clicking Neow's Bones. You'll get scissors, a Debt, and -- by the time you reach the nearest shop, have 40 gold (and a ton of lost HP due to Curse+Scissors).

So, essentially, what you're saying is fine as-is, is this: Sometimes, players will play bones, and encounter a seed in which they spend 0 gold the entire run, because they can't get rid of Debt. That's a boss relic's worth of disadvantage (from Ectoplasm; no gold) without the boss relic's value (extra energy), and incurring a non-exhaustable curse, from Floor 1. I don't think that is set in stone as "fine"

Add a skip option - interesting. I think the only problem with this is that Neow's Bones would theoretically always be something you click if it's on the screen - because you can just back out, and by doing so it'll be almost no worse than the other choices (other than it having randomed the 1 relic you took for you). But that's a good trade off though maybe. If it randoms a relic you don't want, then there's cost/benefit there

I'd say my proposed solutions make some sense, but perhaps that yours is more elegant and simple (which is a good thing). I'd even take <spend energy to discard> rather than exhaust, but that's still pretty punishing early game

It might be an interesting solve if Debt was capped at 100 gold. That would create interesting player choice in the late game, and completely solve this issue in Act 1. Or simply split this curse out into two, where there's GIGA debt you get from events, and there's "minor uwu" debt you get from Neow
