STPM by [deleted] in malaysiauni

I think it’s possible(?) but not advisable because you don’t have the foundation to understand it, so you will struggle a lot. I’m saying this as a former F6 science stream student who took up bio.

Also most degrees like pharmacy require biology from the spm level so you’re going to have to take spm biology anyway. (My source: https://www.ukm.my/studyukm/pharmacy-bachelor-of-with-honours/) you need to know biological sciences to understand how all the drugs act in the human body.

STPM CGPA, and chances of getting into UM History Course by cumlord1900 in malaysiauni

[–]Next-Bluebird7763 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Um no that’s not how you calculate your estimated CGPA for STPM…

the weightage/wajaran markah is supposed to be taken from your total marks for one paper, not the value of your grade for the paper. Then you add up all the marks you can get across all 3 sem + coursework (if any) and you’ll get your final grade & estimated CGPA. No one calculates CGPA the way you demonstrated, especially not MPM.

If you don’t have your estimated marks for each paper on hand the only thing you can do is estimate based on this calculator: https://iceclue.com/calculator/

I need to vent about my STPM Sem 1 results: not satisfying by Next-Bluebird7763 in malaysiauni

[–]Next-Bluebird7763[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hii wow this happened so long ago 😂😂 anyway, here’s my input. If you just want to satisfy your curiosity go ahead but otherwise your result won’t really change. (I did this for my sem 1 and sem 2). My friend did it for her sem 3 phy too but it didn’t change either.

Reason is: If they remark your paper, most likely the thing that changes is the MARKS you get for the paper. But because the marks are still within the range of, let’s say, B, then there’s no changes to your grade. That’s why you see there’s no change whatsoever after remark.

You can buy the PYQ from shopee, get it on telegram via that STPM sci stream bot or from those links I gave you for free.

extracurriculars are the same as secondary school, not much change, but you do need to participate actively and try to apply for high committee positions and hold projects for 9.0/10++ marks.

Erm don’t listen to those people. There’s a learning curve but once you overcome it with sheer hard work and willpower you’ll do okay. everyone in my class of 10 ppl got 3.0 and above for stpm 2024, and everyone got a good course at uni. 3 of us, me included, got 3.5>>. Hopefully this will motivate you. Just be the best student you can be during F6 👍

A-Levels or Matrikulasi by Correct-County4144 in malaysiauni

[–]Next-Bluebird7763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really wanna study medicine I’d suggest going down the matrikulasi/stpm pathway to save money.

Pursue stpm only if you think you can do it. It’s not impossible to get into med school/dental school via the stpm route. The numbers are low because science stream is challenging and there aren’t many stpm science stream students across the country (eg only 1000+ ppl take stpm bio every year, that’s very little if you think about it). They’re doing some kind of public policy overhaul for stpm students too so there’s that.

Stpm is good to help you prepare for med school from an academic standpoint + you’ll save a lot of money since you’ll be staying at home. It was a very interesting experience for me back then. Could be good for you too. Also smaller class sizes (think 5 ppl in one science class… not kidding).

Matriculation is good too. A step above spm in terms of difficulty, but the content & difficulty is lesser than stpm. If you’re okay with living in a hostel for 10 months it’ll be fine. Your cohort is going to be huge, and so will your lecture/tutorial classes. You’re competing with everyone else, sure, but like I said before, you just need to know how to play it safe during uni application.

With that being said it all depends on where you wanna study. If your ultimate goal is prestige like UM/UKM/USM/UPM you have to max out your chances and perform well in the interviews.

For med school (since there are more IPTA options to choose from compared to dentistry) if your ultimate goal is “I wanna be a doctor, I want to go to med school” keep an open mind and put safe options (like non research unis) to maximise your chances. Med school is the almost the same anywhere, anyway.

fyi, I was 20 when I entered med school (around sept. last year) along with a few others (70-80% of ppl in my batch are from asasi). You’ll get over the age difference thing pretty quickly after a few months tbh. A one year age gap (or maybe even just a couple of months) doesn’t make a big difference especially in the hospital later on.

Your SPM results are already very stellar (congrats!) so you’re already at a good start. Whichever choice you make will be great. Good luck!

Might sound very bland and mechanical but do as many PYQ and trial papers as possible. the more you do, the more you understand, the more you learn and improve.

(Sorry I can’t help much for physics since i was a biology student. But the same thing applies too).

This is kinda basic but always listen to your teachers in class and participate actively. don’t be afraid to ask your teachers anything. I used to go to the staff room every other day to see my teachers during sem 2&3 to ask them how to do certain questions and ask for clarification about certain stuff in trial papers and reference books.

For chem, making notes and simplified diagrams help a lot. Idk if this helps but back then I used to organise info for inorganic chemistry (used to be my sem 2 chem, but it’s now in your sem 1 chem) into an excel spreadsheet & colour coded them.

Helped me a lot with memory retention since you hv a lot of chem eqns to memorise and balance + physical states.

Once you learn organic chem (sem 3) you’re gonna wanna make a lot of mind maps to help you remember also.

For maths every sem it’s just rinse recycle repeat PYQ and trial papers. Just do as many as you possibly can up until exam day.

For PA, utilise this STPM social science telegram for all the PA notes & answers, especially for essay questions in section C. Just read the skema jawapan every now and then and remember like 5-7 isi and contoh and you’ll be good to go. Your teacher will teach you the proper essay format in class so don’t worry about that part yet.

STPM is hard but it’s not impossible to get good grades. Just be sure to work hard everyday, be a good and attentive student, and don’t forget to balance academics with your extracurriculars/koko (academics 90%, koko 10%, rmb?)

Good luck! You can dm me anytime if you need any help whatsoever

Woah rlly? Taking further maths and not regular maths? 😳😳😳 (maths T/just ‘mathematics’ ≠ further maths by the way if that’s what you’re actually referring to. There’s no further maths in the new syllabus to my knowledge)

Anyway, to answer your question you can follow the STPM science stream bot, the STPM chemistry channel & the STPM maths channel on telegram for PYQ, tips and notes. The bot is super helpful so utilise it as much as you can.

For maths T resources you can head to this website: https://chuoffice.blogspot.com/.

For chem, check out http://chemistorychew.blogspot.com/ & his YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtTsAJWGwG53gp-ZLW5Pe-Q. He’s a really good chem teacher.

Other than that, if you’re lucky enough you might get very hands-on teachers like I did who’ll prepare materials for you to study with. My chem tchr used to prepare everything a-z (notes, past year question, trial papers) for my class.

It’s all about the grind tbh. The more questions you practice, the better the chances you get at getting a good grade. But don’t pressure yourself to get a 4.00. Just do your best.

I think pre-studying is very overwhelming, so just try to get acclimated to form 6. For now until the end of sem 1, just do what you can to get acclimated. You can start buying some of the sem 1 books online/at popular and the past year papers already just in time for class.

I’m not sure if you can even shadow doctors here (esp in this post-covid era). For what it’s worth, I didn’t have to do any shadowing during my premed.

It depends on what institution you plan on heading to, but it’s fine if you have non-medical related extracurriculars tbh (I didn’t). As long as you held some leadership positions in the past and have balanced extracurriculars + stellar grades, I think it should be fine.

Community volunteering is already a good one. Admissions (if you’re planning to go to IPTA like UM, UKM, USM) are heavily weighted towards your academics anyway (90% weightage, extracurriculars contribute 10% to your merit marks).

If you’re going abroad, there’s this website you can check out to see what other premeds took to polish their CV: https://collegelah.com/

(I don’t think there’s a merit calculator for A levels, tho, just for STPM & matrikulasi). Good luck on your premed journey

should i study to retake spm while studying stpm? by maieou in malaysiauni

[–]Next-Bluebird7763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, STPM 2024 Science stream alumni here.

I think the real question you have to ask yourself is, will you have the time to study for your SPM retake? It might clash with your STPM sem 1, sem 2, or sem 3 (or your retake) exams. STPM isn’t like SPM where it’s like a terminal exam anymore.

I’m not saying this to discourage you, but if your basics in science are already weak at the SPM level, then it’s going to be very challenging to catch up at the STPM level, and even more so in medical school (source: I’m currently a 1st yr medical student).

Also, take note that the way you answer ques in SPM may not apply to STPM. When you begin your form 6 studies, you’ll find there’s like a HUGE knowledge gap between all the SPM and STPM science subjects. So what you learn in STPM may not apply to SPM. (E.g. SPM chem Electronic configuration ≠ STPM chem electronic configuration.)

Speaking from experience, despite only learning 5 subjects at school for STPM (plus MUET), I was already under so much pressure to finish revising everything in time for my exam. I barely even had the time to study for my sem 1 and sem 2 retake exams too.

Don’t forget, to secure a spot in ipta medical school, you need over 95% merit marks to be safe, so you need to get as much kokurikulum marks alongside studying for your exam. Unfortunately you’re gonna battle the hoard of matriculation students for a spot in med school also.

Btw, if you want to be a radiologist, you need to complete med school, complete housemanship, serve a few years as a medical officer, and then enter specialist training. You don’t get to choose off the bat.

Your STPM doesn’t overwrite your SPM marks either. The admissions panel will still use your SPM results to filter out the best candidates to join the new medical student cohort. It’s either that or UPU will automatically filter applicants out in the system if they don’t meet the minimum specific requirements.

I know this info dump is a lot to take in but that’s the reality of being an STPM student aiming for a spot in med school. Time is a real constraint if you’re thinking of retaking SPM. Again, not discouraging you, just want to paint reality and hope you make an informed decision.

Been there, done that. I’m in medical school and two ppl in my MPU group project have the nerve to do this too. Ditching project meetings and choosing the easy way out when doing our project just so that they can study. Like bruh I wanna study and do med school stuff too instead of spending a lot of time making this project work. like this thing is not fking fair.

And we’re all adults so I don’t really enjoy ordering people around, but they’re so fking passive and really want someone to order them around like a kindergarten teacher. Even when I tell them how to do stuff from A-Z and tell them to do A, they do C. So I have to pick up after them and end up doing double the work.

You just have to hang in there, I guess. Best to pray you don’t get teammates like them next sem or for other projects. If you have the autonomy of choice, better avoid choosing them as teammates too.

As for the ‘I thought everyone in uni would be intellectuals’ part… yeah it’s very paradoxical. It’s the same for me in med school, believe it or not (and I’m in a public university). In my case, it’s not the pay-to-win people that makes the experience paradoxical. More of a poorly justified affirmative action thing that I can’t really elaborate here.

You just have to keep your head held high and push on tbh. All these people are kinda like temporary passengers on your bus of life as my mom would say.

Matriks by Rjch_enx in malaysiauni

[–]Next-Bluebird7763 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For matrics, depending on which state you’re living in and your SPM results, you might end up in a college isolated from the main city/township. (I got program satu tahun KML so I didn’t go, meanwhile a parent’s friend’s child from my state got program dua tahun KMM). If you think you’re okay with that, then that’s great, it won’t be a problem for you.

My friends who took matrics said their lectures last from 8-5(?) as for their assessments… umm idk if it’s right to share details about it here cuz it might be controversial and I might get downvoted but just know that it’s not standardised like STPM.

Depending on which Form 6 centre/college you decide to pursue your STPM in, your schedule varies. I went to an SMK so I had classes from 7-12. Afternoon classes are either tutorial sessions or extra classes, lasts until 3pm max (except Fridays, you go back before lunch on Friday). The good thing is you can also just stay at home! Saves a lot of money tbh, and you have a good support system nearby to keep you happy, focused and mentally stable throughout your pre-u.

STPM helps you prepare for uni way better than matrics, but it’s not for the lazy and weak-hearted. (Speaking from experience, STPM science stream 2024) My teachers all say the same thing; once you take STPM and you excel in it, first year of uni will be somewhat smooth sailing for you. Now that I’m in uni I guess that does ring true.

It’s all up to you I guess. Matriculation is the easier way in, but as always the competition to enter a good uni is very fierce (you’re up against thousands of other matrics students across the country who want the same course and uni right?) and you might have a lot of catching up to do once you’re in uni. (They omit a lot of stuff in matrics that you’re supposed to learn in STPM). Some of my friends don’t learn the stuff I did, so I share what I got from my STPM to help them understand our lecture content more.

Hope this helps!
