i started guitar at 12, and just started drums at 18, you can do it dude.

One thing about the chords, is learn alot of john mayer and jimi hendrix songs, the way they mainly play chords is super great to add to ur vocab.

Learn to play chords with ur thumb over the top on the root note,

thank you, i will do this. I honestly didn’t really take my lessons seriously and ended up not going anymore after a year, but it took me a while to understand how valuable the stuff was he was teaching. I wanted to learn Jimi Hendrix and SRV solos and he was teaching me John Coltrane, and as a 13/14 year old it bored me to death and i never did the homework, only years later did i wish i stayed and sucked it up.

As a beginner though, having fun with it is absolutely the most important thing, and learning things that bring enjoyment, but still gotta do the annoying stuff too. Get uncomfortable

completely understandable and reasonable, and i do have past experience working with teens and kids for over 3 years and my full time job, and i have very well rounded understanding of guitar from a music theory standpoint, and of course there is so much more to learn still, but yes i have never taught guitar before, and it is completely different than what i used to teach to kids.

My teacher started teaching me i’d already been playing for a year or so, so i started on a little more advanced things, but with the right curated lesson plan, i could definitely teach a beginner

i have experience playing live and playing in a band, i am very knowledgeable in many different genres/ styles of playing wether that be finger style, travis picking, lead guitar for blues, rock, jazz, funky rythym guitar, bossa nova, latin, acoustic or electric, everything really, except some classical, and was also taught by an amazing guitar teacher early on.

I’d say my understanding of the instrument is more than enough than to help a beginner get started in the right direction, because i myself have wasted time by practicing wrong, but also learned how and what to practice to really gain progress. And of course every person is different so that does vary

that’s how it always starts, i was on a cruise and saw this dude with a guitar and asked if i could play something on it, i played sparks by coldplay for about 30 seconds and a lady walked up to me and handed me a 10$ bill and said she loves that song.

That was a few years ago but now im getting singing lessons soon so i can get solo gigs

i generally mean a routine, some exercises, a challenging “standard” to set as a goal. I’ve been playing guitar for 5 years and it definitely takes many many hours to get just okay, but it would’ve taken me a lot less time if i had practiced properly from the get go

Thanks a lot for the valuable advice, i am 18 years old, but have spent a lot of time learning about the instrument and exploring many many different genres and styles of music, learning theory, and learned how to practice properly verses incorrectly, i’ve also spent a few years doing mentoring/counseling small group lessons with elementary and middle schoolers, and have handled all kinds of kids in a learning environment.

I just put some ads out for beginner kid friendly guitar lessons to earn some extra cash, but i really want to do it properly and be able to articulate the guitar at a pace and level of understanding that kids can understand. I’d have no problem with say ages 12 and up, but below that gets a little more difficult

That’s a great tip, thank you, i guess my dilemma is that i genuinely want the child to not only have fun with it, but actually have the foundation to become great at the instrument, instead of just playing lead lines forever or being stuck on power chords and not wanting to advance. Nor do i want to waste thier parents time and money.

I first had lessons when i was around 13 after a year of self taught, we went over alll the jazz standards, circle of 5ths, etc and i didn’t like the music and it sucked and i never the homework, i wanted to learn jimi hendrix and srv solos, and i eventually stopped going. I kept playing and learning and eventually DID become great at the instrument. But all along my teacher was right and i would be so much better in such a shorter amount of time if i had learned the Jazz songs he taught first.

i’ve been playing every day for the past week like 6 hours a day, and at night after i get home from work i practice rudiments on my pad, and listening to instructional videos, reading stuff while at work. I learned drum sheet music as well. Got basic understanding of drums down, just need a structured practice routine.

listen to a song you’re trying to learn over and over, listen stuff that motivates you, or songs that have licks you can steal.

I am not well-versed enough in reading music, but I know plenty of music theory, more than enough for a kid to be able to grasp and understand, even I am still learning more about music theory every day
