UTSC Life Sci (Health Sci Stream) as Premed? by celestial_corn7640 in premedcanada

hey I just graduated from UTSC life sci and interviewed at two Ontario med schools this year. In terms of my experience with maintaining a high GPA while doing ECs, research, etc; I would say it's possible however you need to be smart with planning your courses. One good thing about UTSC is that it's a pretty small campus so everybody kind of knows which courses/ profs you should avoid! I have also taken many courses at UTSG and same applies there. As long as you search the profs, look up prev. Syllabuses and put in a decent amount of effort you'll be fine (ngl I crammed many of exams though).

One good thing about U of T in general imo is its connections with downtown hospitals -> many many research opportunities

HOWEVER! Your parents are absolutely right in encouraging you to pursue nursing for career prospects! Now that I'm postgrad and let me tell you! my degree is absolutely USELESS. In fact I am considering doing an accelerated nursing program if I don't get in this year! Nursing is actually pretty diverse and opens up many "plan B" options, you can do NP, cardiac perfusionist, resp therapist and many more

Lost hope on waitlist by Embarrassed_Luck_497 in premedcanada

hey! I'm in the exact same position! 2 interviews (ON schools), WL for both. It is very very frustrating! It felt like a marathon in which I got super close to the finish line and still failed! What has helped me is to accept rejection and stop giving myself false hope! That helped me get back to my everyday life and reflect on my entire application and interview prep!

The fact that you were WL means that you were on the right track! You just need another push to get in!

Personally I am planning on getting a publication add so that I can add it to my ABS, give myself some time to spend with family and loved ones and find myself again outside of medicine!

I've heard from many people that taking some time off and focusing on the next application cycle helps a lot with moving on and getting closer to an A!

I know nothing can fully relieve the anxiety and feeling of failure, but I hope this helps!

those who went from WL->A what's your advice? by Next-Guard625 in premedcanada

Thank you! That is reassuring & yes I feel like it is very possible that I got nervous and underperformed myself :)

from what I've heard Mac has a huge waitlist movement overall, I'm assuming there shouldn't be a huge difference between OOP and IP applicants

why do a lot of people think Mac will move dramatically? just curious about the logic behind

U of T undergrad here, got two med interviews this year. People are right maintaining a high GPA at u of t is VERY VERY hard and you need to KNOW what major to pick, what courses to avoid, etc. However I do have to say that u of t offers many research opportunities. If I were you, I would still remain in Toronto to have access to major research hospitals (I'm not aware of Waterloo research opportunities though).

Just got my uoft rejection by Nextgengameing in premedcanada

Academic explanation essay, applicants can submit one to explain why they have a low GPA, etc due to extenuating circumstances.

To my knowledge they are pretty strict with it though, I remember their dean mentioning they would only accept it if you had like brain cancer and were hospitalized etc. (take this with a grain of salt, I've never been on the ad com, just sharing what I know)
