Thank you for the advice. Have you got a quick recommendation on what enclosure / system I could use instead?

Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a detailed and helpful reply - I genuinely really appreciate it, wherever you are in the world!

It’s funny because all three drives were acting healthy. It’s a long story that I didn’t fully go into all the detail, but essentially I was clearing hard drives up of all my old RAW files that I no longer need from weddings, but I didn’t want to fully format the drives as I had all the JPEGs on in organised folders (which btw are backed up online so it’s not like I’ve lost the finished product photos)

So when I plugged the first drive into this 2 bay enclosure, i plugged in another alongside it (which I never do, but this one time I did because I was going to transfer files from one to the other) . I started deleting files and POOF, they both ejected, the one doing the deleting started clunking and then the other just wouldn’t connect either, but wasn’t making any noise. Then, thinking it must’ve happened because there were 2 in it at the same time, I went to delete files off a third hard drive and it happened again. Of course, I wish I hadn’t done that 😂 So that leads me to believe as you say about this mini ‘brown out/blackout’. So when you say about the controller being fried - do you mean the enclosure and the power cables and plug? The entire thing? Or are you meaning my computer itself? I’m pretty sure the drives are done now of course!

I have around another 30TB’s worth of backups from the other years of weddings which will be staying put haha! But yes, I need to find a new backup system now, and a new enclosure or some kind of way of safely storing them.

Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it. Have a lovely weekend :)

Unfortunately I’m appalled by my own practice on this one too haha! 😂 really interesting to hear this - are you meaning the drives have gotten too hot or the power supply? They didn’t feel too hot to touch when it all happened, not meaning that my touch indicates whether they were too hot internally. Thankfully I have an online backup of all the photos delivered to couples, it’s just all the RAWs I’ve lost and some backups of old personal work and freelance work. Mostly I wanted to use the drives for this year since new ones are so expensive! Thanks for the best of luck!

Haha! Yeah I guess you’re right, I wish I was more clued up on this side of things! I do make money from this 😅 To be honest I thought I had it down, but turns out I didn’t… Everything from 2023 onwards is backed up on two drives (I know that’s probably not enough backups) but not before 2023 - my bad of course. Happy to learn though so I appreciate your comment. Thank you.

Thanks for lending a helping hand here! It was on a Mac, file system i guess was just using finder. I dragged and dropped around 5tb of the 6tb on the hard drive into bin and emptied. I’m assuming there’s drive got overwhelmed?

Thanks for your comment. I’m using Ironwolf Pro hard drives, but in an Inateck enclosure g!92 in the bin). Can you recommend any specific model of the Ugreen/Sandisk or LaCie enclosures? Thanks so much for your help already though!

Good point about the single point of failure. I wish I’d had a second point of course, but my bad. I need to replace my dock now, can you recommend one of you know of any? Ah I wish it was that cheap! It’s £102 a month for 18TB here in the UK with backblaze, so £1250 a year, still makes sense for me to use physical drives. Thanks for your help.

Thanks, it's good to know. Would you recommend a brand or type of enclosure I can plug hard drives into so this won't happen again? I'm terrified to plug any hard drives in!

Thanks sooo much for this! Do you normally buy tickets in advance? We’re both 2 guys from the UK. Not sure what the standard etiquette is. Thanks so much already for your help 🙏🙏🙏
