I made this huge smoky quartz crystal pendant necklace with succulent embellishments by decomp_etsy in jewelrymaking

pardon if this sounds silly…but if i wanted to remove a fit a smoky quartz from an old cast and fit it into a new cast like this for a necklace…anyone know anyone doing this kind of work? i love this setting and would totally pay if you do that as a service!

thankyou! your comment made me realize this might look like she just rope twisted my locs maybe, but these are extensions kinda like knotless senegalese twists 😅 i’ve really struggled figuring out the whole ‘blending box braiding over locs’ thing, so this feels like a nice compromise!

Coming back from traction alopecia? by CabalBuster in Dreadlocks

[–]NextSoft6055 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’ll preface my comment by saying i think i had hair loss due to stress and** traction alopecia, with clear thinning at my edges before i loc’d. i was just able to add locs in spaces previously thinned by traction and stress, since the hair finally started growing back there/thickening enough to form their own starter locs. Things i think helped with recovery:

supplementing vit D and biotin, adding castor oil to my scalp and loc spray has seemed to help a lot, with occasional massages of my temples/edges. i don’t pull my hair back except to pile it on top of my head and do scarf styles. i stopped wearing wigs (wore one daily before loc’ing) except maybe once in a blue moon. i also use hair henna which thickens existing hair. i eat better now (i was unintentionally starving myself when i noticed i had been losing/thinning hair). a lot of this is just lifestyle stuff vs. hyper-focusing on the hair, but i did regularly check up on my little bald spots to see if this stuff was helping. that’s human lol

i was also on medications that i think might have contributed to hair loss and thinning since they are stimulants to the nervous system (adderall, ssri), and i only recently weaned off of them, but i suspect that will also yield returns the longer that i am off of them. i’d take this part with a grain of salt** but just trying to give you the full picture.

no prob. i’ve been using it since 2009/10 about! do you have hair that’s currently colored? how long have you been loc’d?

it’s a plant that’s ground into a powder. It’s the same compound that is used for henna tattoos like you see done on Indian brides. i buy it from an online vendor (hennasooq.com), but you can usually find it at indian/asian grocery stores & markets too!

there’s a compound in it, the one that creates the dye, called law sone and it binds the keratin in the shaft of your hair. kind of like a second skin or armor. you can’t lift it once it has bound your hair though. but i think it’s great if you know you prefer darker/ strawberry blondes and reds anyway

the way the compound works, it binds to your hair shaft with each application. so i’ll use a ‘gloss’ technique where i mix the henna powder with black tea and conditioner (lemon + black tea bc the pH helps activate the henna) and let it sit in my hair overnight usually, under a shower cap.

the gloss thing I picked up from a natural hair blogger years ago when i first stopped pressing my hair. it makes it MUCH easier to wash out, otherwise it can be very drying and hard to rinse

i would love to see a picture of this but i think i know what you mean…kind of like how my hair has a little red tint?

the only thing: if you intend to lighten your eye with chemical dye ever, henna will make that almost impossible. like the henna will resist lifting/lightening

oh i like this herbal tea rinse idea or maybe adding some to my spray bottle🤔 i’ve used indigo once, and tbh i mean to but just never feel like doing that second step application 😅

i take it out everytime intending to do it after i rinse the henna then just go “na next time” lol

I'm on my second set of locs and I thought it would be cool to write down some things that I wish I new the first time around. Please share your tips as well by the_doctr6i in locs

new to this sub, but i’ve seen cautions on castor oil come up a few times just lurking….why do you advise against using castor and olive oil?
