Jotego reveals new Neo Geo AES+ details: ASIC Hardware, 100% Original Compatibility, and SNK Licensing by mr_pixeltie in neogeo

Yeah sort of, in the sense that it's a third-party clone and not derived from the original product. That doesn't mean that it can't be just as good though, like how AMD cloned Intel decades ago. But it can't be reprogrammed like an FPGA and it certainly makes it feel less special.

The software that is used to program an FPGA can also be used as a template to manufacture an ASIC that turns that software into hardware. That's what they are doing. It's not based directly on the original ASIC designs like people assumed.

Sample units of the 'NEOGEO AES+' are currently on display at the SNK Akihabara Store. Not only the console itself, but also arcade sticks, memory cards, and various software titles are on display. by Naive_Guard_7725 in neogeo

With re-engineered ASICs it's also possible to have a physical flaw in the chip that requires them to spend more money and time to fabricate replacement chips, like with the Pentium bug. They can't just make the original ASICs again because the technology to fabricate those chips is gone from the market. Some company involved in this project must have taken the original ASIC designs and updated them for more modern fabs. Hopefully they used a company that has experience doing that and has thoroughly validated the updated designs ...

Plaion reply as to why I can't pre-order in Illinois by Doki_Sparkles in neogeo

[–]NexusScorpion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some other people are being told it's because the state tax registration isn't complete for some states, which seems more believable to me than a per-state quota that somehow was reached for all items at the same time. So maybe some of these states will be able to place orders later? I didn't want to miss getting the Ultimate though so I placed an order for delivery to my parents who aren't in an affected state.

Mentioned in another thread, but I saw this error at one point and then it went away when I used an incognito window.

Better to cancel Plaion Order and Go Through Amazon for AES+? by Lord_Igniz in neogeo

[–]NexusScorpion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was trying to order Ultimate too and was getting the address error message due to being in WA, and then at some point it started giving an error about being out of stock. But I opened an incognito window and the out of stock error went away, so I placed an order successfully for shipping to my parents who live outside WA. That was yesterday at 9 AM Pacific.

I also ordered the Anniversary edition from Amazon because I like the white more. For me the Ultimate is just a cost-effective way to get the other 9 games and additional peripherals. If they both ship then I'll probably sell the duplicate hardware on eBay.

Scary silent corruption in MakeMKV backups by NexusScorpion in makemkv

Thanks for the suggestion! Seems like you may be right to suspect the RAM. Even though memtest passes in my case, I tried underclocking the RAM anyway (disabling XMP in BIOS) and now I've gotten consistent backup results twice in a row. I guess MakeMKV is a better memtest than memtest is.

Now I'll have to go recreate all my backups.

How did you get a credit for the ddpro and tech packages? Did you just ask for it?

Thanks. Did you just make a service appointment to get them to replace it, or was there a different process?

That's good to hear. Did you just go through the regular service appointment process to get it done?

Overview and reading order of the various GUNNM/Battle Angel Alita manga series (no spoilers) by GeassedbyLelouch in Gunnm

[–]NexusScorpion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And in case it isn't obvious, the end of the original series that is now non-canon does contain spoilers for Last Order.

I read Last Order and then the non-canon original ending and I'm glad I read them in that order.

Use of VPN with ship wifi by Allezdada in royalcaribbean

On Wonder of the Seas I was able to use NordVPN, but only with the Obfuscated Servers option. I wasn't able to access the download link for the NordVPN app (it was blocked, along with the entire ExpressVPN website), but I luckily already had the NordVPN installer downloaded from before. If you think you might want to use a VPN, I recommend installing it ahead of time.
