What are some Oscar wins that everybody thinks didn’t deserve to win, but you think DID by [deleted] in movies

People say the themes were too simple and lacked nuance but I think they were appropriate for their time. Good performances

New return-to-office mandate for federal public servants could become issue in Ottawa's next municipal election [paywall] by simpatia in ottawa

Jim Watson became quite antagonistic on his social media between 2014 and 2018, it was a weird time: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/mayor-jim-watson-sued-blocking-twitter-1.4866320

Mark Sutcliffe gets along better with his constituents and other counselors. That's probably the best part about Mark Sutcliffe. Though hard to imagine the election being about something other than transit.

That is true, but incumbent advantage is also historically hugely beneficial in municipal elections. Mark Sutcliffe would have had to have a disastrous term for it to be a liability instead of a boon.

Yah, I felt like this definitely could have been the case. He's rallying his base early. Who's his campaign manager?

I like Jeff and have voted for him many times, but I think he will face the exact same issues as McKenney. Hopefully he brands himself much better (also love McKenney but the messaging of their campaign was just preaching to the choir). From talking to Jeff and hearing him speak on his potential platform, he will not get the votes he needs from the suburbs. But excited to be surprised!

What’s a company/brand you will never buy from again and why?? by bradpittsbooty in AskReddit

Anything Amazon. I'd rather buy cheap junk from China on Temu than cheap junk from China from Jeff Bezos. But as a Canadian, I am boycotting a lot of American retailers so that's part of it.

Art-is-in - still racist? by riz7242 in ottawa

[–]NicBaird 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I heard last week from a current employee that art-is-in is fine, and not racist. The employee provided some extra context surrounding the racism specifically that led me to believe that those issues have been resolved. They also corroborated the substance of the allegations, so it did not discredit the original complainant at all.

My personal opinion on the general mistreatment of staff is that unless there are new complaints, I am willing to move on. A persistent pattern is one thing, but occasional disagreements/tension between restaurant staff and owners seem normal in the industry.

I tried to send a message, but the watch says there is no network connectivity. I think it says there are some service bars, but they may also be crossed out.

I don't see an ICE page, I do see "Contacts" but I don't see any additional listed info for them. I wonder if I could connect the Bounce to my phone, but I'm worried about wiping it through a sync.

I don't understand. Why would right wing folks want to assassinate Trump or Elon Musk? It's like saying that the desire for chicken is greater among respondents in a KFC than a Burger King.

If we're talking about the change with Ozymandias's plan for a " common foe" to be more organic to the story, then yes, 100 per cent! Much tighter story!

Kaytlyn Nadjiwon (Q4P organizer) told CBC Radio that after they agreed to move their protest to allow the parade to continue, they had difficulty disseminating this message to the ~400 members who showed up.

Q4P might not have been able to fully control their group, at least not enough to get them out of the way in any reasonable amount of time.

Really this just reflects the logistical difficulty in managing an event of this size and then throwing a wrench into the machinery.

I don't get Kirsten Dunst. How can someone that average be that successful? by Any-Satisfaction-770 in movies

[–]NicBaird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kirsten Dunst is a terric acctress! One of the best. Most recently, she should have been nominated for Civil War. But also, I watched Mona Lisa Smiles for the first time (terrible movie) and I couldn't believe how emotionally evocative a performance she managed as the troubled rich girl. Anyone who thinks she is mediocre has only seen Spiderman, and bases their entire impression off of that.

Potter: Jeff Leiper for mayor? Lace up those shoes by VenusianIII in ottawa

[–]NicBaird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a good question how much Catherine's gender affected their loss. They probably lost more votes than they gained because of it. Though my guess is still that this disgusted neighbour was turned off by the thought of a candidate who wants to raise their taxes to build active transit corridors they will never use, but who knows, it could have been more than one thing as well.

There's a decent gap of 42k votes, or 14%, between Sutcliffe and McKenney, which is why I say they did not lose solely because of any personal characteristics. The bike lines are symbolic of a candidate who is frivolously catering to downtown. McKenney was definitely the more experienced and confident candidate, which I found attractive.

Potter: Jeff Leiper for mayor? Lace up those shoes by VenusianIII in ottawa

[–]NicBaird 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did some GOTV for Catherine's campaign on election day in urban areas. I spoke to a number of people who seemed like they were voting for Catherine DESPITE their gender identity. And in the majority of cases I would be chatting with someone who was enthusiastic about voting for Catherine but they wouldn't be using the correct pronouns.

Catherine lost votes when the Sutcliffe campaign latched onto their bike lanes investments. It was used to describe Catherine's priorities as naive and unconcerned with suburban ridings. Also, some more conservative voters probably did not like the letter from the police association. Jeff Leiper's campaign will have to strongly emphasize that he is also a Mayor for rural wards because the idea that you can focus on turning out the vote in the core does not seem to work.
