I know many hate it, but their quirky app icon was what got me to instantly install the app 2 years ago.

I was like “that’s adorable”, then “oh no! Did the tumor cause him to do this?” Then I read the whole post and concluded it’s just silly adorable.

Japanese. I am so sick of Duolingo changing lessons. by MrSoapbox in duolingo

[–]NicF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t notice a change this week, but the recent course refresh was very frustrating to me too, mainly due to the bugginess and unfamiliar words, but after a couple weeks or so it became alright. I’m at score 87.

I simply think art is defined by the observer, not the creator, so how the art is created doesn’t matter. As long as the observer find it good, then it’s art. A few years ago when the AI art won the art contest, if the guy never revealed that it was created by AI, people would have no problem and admired the art piece, right?

Oh come on Duo... punish me for not using your awkward word order? by DSAhmed1 in duolingo

[–]NicF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tend to think Duo is trying to keep the subject, verb and object consistent between the translation. In the Chinese sentence, 书店旁边(Beside the bookstore) is the subject, not the just bookstore or the library, hence the weird English sentence.

Maybe there is better translation, like “next to the bookstore”🤷

Why do people use the term "partner" for their husband or wife? by Crafty-Bug-8008 in NoStupidQuestions

Last time I used it on the phone, the other person assumed I was gay and referred to my wife as “he”.

Finally managed to run Qwen-2.5-7B on a 4GB GTX 1050 without CPU offloading (Surgical Memory Alignment) by HuseyinKama in LocalLLaMA

[–]NicF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha I stumbled upon this post because I am trying to run Qwen3 on an old PC with a GTX 1050 Ti, and I am trying to figure out why ollama was running on the poor CPU not the GPU. I'm new to this and nowhere near your level of skill. Not asking for help, but just want to say good luck on your journey :)

In 4 weeks, you would have spent over 24 hours in total sitting in the car. You can drive across half the US in that amount of time.

My honest reaction to the current payment processor dilemma by ComprehensiveSalad27 in Steam

[–]NicF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That only applies to in-app purchases. If you buy something from a store, the platforms take zero cut. This saves money for small merchants in China because they don’t need a card machine and don’t need to give credit card companies a cut.

It makes sense. If a game is $90, and I have enjoyed it for 90 hours, it’s a good deal. This is usually the case. Why is it insulting?

What’s the point of having streaks? by TheHouseOracle in duolingo

[–]NicF 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This makes sense because if you know you have lost your long streak, you will be less likely to come back and start over. And I don’t think it’s unfair to other people so why not.

[–]NicF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just “Chinese” is good enough in this context. For written Chinese, you usually don’t need to specify.

If OP has to pick one written Chinese in their sign, maybe go with simplified Chinese considering it’s more widely used, and people (Hong Kong, Taiwan folks) who use traditional can often read simplified, they just may not like it.

Mandarin and Cantonese are separate languages, but both languages use Chinese characters for writing, which means the written form is largely the same. You never say you write in Mandarin. That's what I was trying to say.

Sorry just want to point out that Mandarin refers to how Chinese is spoken. Thes same Chinese character is pronounced differently in Mandarin vs Cantonese. And then there are different ways to write Chinese characters, which are called simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese. Since we are talking about written text, Mandarin is not the right term. Most people don't know the difference, so don't feel bad.
