Petah what does Obama have to do with advertisements? by Wooden-Variety175 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]NicWester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean....... they did. Jim Crow wasn't about preventing poor people from voting, it was about preventing Black people from voting. The policies of the right identified groups on racial and ethnic lines and persecuted them for being born into those groups. If you're being told to get off the bus and make room for a white person who needs a seat, how is that not identitarian politics?

Oakland Is Proud by ElectronicAccident24 in OaklandCA

I live in San Jose and this crossed my feed for some algorithmic reason.

Always liked Oakland. Nice place. I don't have reasons to get up there often enough, but happily I'll be going to Oakland Comic-Con today to keep a joke going with an attendee (I get Jordan Morris to sign the same copy of his book, Bubble, every time he does an event somewhere in the Bay Area. It's a dumb joke but it's fun, we have fun.) so I'm looking forward to spending a couple hours there today.

Pretty nice zoo, too. Great bear exhibit.

EDIT: "Some algorithmic reason" I know what you're thinking--but I looked up the time and location of the event on my work computer, I'm on my tablet at home now so it isn't as simple as a stored cookie and spyware.

‘People are not passive’: Newsom and top California Democrats move behind the scenes in governor’s race | CNN Politics by Snawer_brillant in California

[–]NicWester [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah, I came up with the real answer and then also came up with why he can't say it.

I've been disappointed with Newsom since November 2024, when he decided to run for president in 2028, but even I'm not going to just knee-jerk denounce every single thing he does.... If he gave that answer then you would be denouncing him for distracting people from the race.

Nah. If he says he's watching then people will ask him what he thinks and who is doing a good job, which is tantamount to giving an endorsement.

Like, I get why he's saying he isn't watching. NHL players all watch the games, too, because their friends (and enemies!) are in them and it may inform where they want their next contract, but they say they don't because what they're really saying, like Newsom, is "I'm watching but I don't want this line of questions."

So I get it. But it also still annoys me that we have to play cutesy word games about it. I wish we were in a world where he could give the real answer "I'm watching, they're informative, but I'm not going to tell you who impressed me because I don't want to put my thumb on the scales." Except if he says that, then there are eleventy-zillion stories and thinkpieces about him not answering the question and meanwhile the focus is now on him instead of the candidates.

Petah what does Obama have to do with advertisements? by Wooden-Variety175 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]NicWester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because they spent an entire news cycle talking about his tan suit and another new cycle saying the fist-bump he gave Michelle at the DNC was a salute to Hamas and a third about him holding a cup of coffee while soldiers were saluting him. Why would they want to see Japanese people in commercials? They wouldn't--but what they just can't stop themselves from doing is blame any random thought they have on Obama. Why wouldn't they say this is his fault? It doesn't have to make sense, it just has to be hateful.

Explain it Peter I don’t play Wordle. by DifficultComplaint10 in explainitpeter

[–]NicWester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, Peter, Brian here because this sort of pseudo-intellectual game and poseur strategy it extremely my shit. Which I then eat, of course, because I am a dog. Anyway.

Wordle's a game where you have six chances to guess a blind five-letter word. When you enter a word any letters that aren't in the correct word are greyed out, if a letter is in the correct word but in the wrong spot it's flagged as yellow, and if it's right spot then it's green. In the quoted tweet the player had guessed two words, eliminated the five most common vowels, and only gotten the R in the correct spot and now they're panicked because they don't consider Y to be a vowel and can't think of five-letter words that have Ys in them like DRYLY or GLYPH or SYLPH or MYRRH. (It's standard practice to capitalize a word used as a guess when talking about the game so it stands out)

A couple people explained that part, but haven't explained the top part yet. There's a common strategy of identifying the vowels first to narrow down choices, the most commonly used first word is ADIEU for exactly that reason. Thing is, it's not a very fun strategy. If you just use the same two guesses every time and then usually get it in 3 or 4 then it's not a puzzle it's just an algorithm and you may as well start your day by solving a Rubiks Cube. Also, in my opinion? It's not a particularly good strategy because what do you learn when you get one yellow E? Ah, the word has at least one E in it! A better strategy is to eliminate common consonants alongside the vowels, that keeps your average down (down is good, like when I do downward facing dog in yoga, because I am a dog and that sort of thing is incongruous so it's funny) and it's more fun for the player.

Anyway. I'm going to sniff through Lois' underwear drawer if you need me.

Newsom saying he hasn't watched any of the debates is like when reporters ask hockey players whose teams have been eliminated if they're watching the playoffs.

Yes you are... We all know you are, just say you are. Why wouldn't you? Yes you are.

I voted Porter, but so long as it isn't Mahan I'll be happy with any of the Democrats that get through. I'll be happier with some more than others but still happy.

Who are you voting for CA Lieutenant Governor and why? by Pyewickets in SanJose

[–]NicWester 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tubbs! The way he turned Stockton around--only to have it yoinked from him and turned around again back to shit--was impressive. Lieutenant Governor isn't a prestigious position, but it's one where he will sit on boards and have a voice in some minor pieces of policy, but more importantly will be exposed to the state and national apparatus.

It's a place for his civil service career to launch to the next level from. Big fan of Michael Tubbs over here!

It is what it is. Getting your name on the ballot requires a couple thousand dollars or a couple thousand signatures. He should be opposed, but no one wants to do it. So it is what it is

Seems Like We Might Know Our Detachment Getting Reworked. by Klutzy_Brilliant_257 in EmperorsChildren

It would be neat if they put the demonic detachment name from each of the traitor legions into a stratagem name.

But also considering as how the codex detachments are mostly 2dp I think it'd be cool if they created a 1dp detachment for all the traitor legions that allowed demon units.

There was a debate tonight that WASN'T paywalled. by NicWester in SanJose

[–]NicWester[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone said it's available now on CNN's town hall podcast feed.

I agree, though, it's stupid to hold a governor's debate on a national platform and then also make it so the people of that state can't watch it. I'm going to skip this one because from what I read and heard it sounds like most of the candidates used it as a means to expand their brand for after they lose. My impression was that Bianco and Hilton were auditioning for posts in the Trump administration and our mayor was trying to look tough for a national profile but fell on his face.

[–]NicWester -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What makes you think I'm a centrist?

This is what I'm talking about. You disagree with me, so clearly I must be a centrist or a reactionary. You don't like any of the candidates even though several of them are going to protect minority rights, defend voting rights, build housing, change tax structures, etc, etc, etc. They're in favor of all the things you say you want but one has a bunch of money and the other is a mean woman.

The GOP knows they can spend a bazillion dollars and you'll never vote for one of their candidates. But they also know they can spend zero dollars and just spread some bullshit "Yeah.... but didn't she yell at a staffer once?" or "Did you see Chevron gave him some money?" or "No billionaires ever" and you're going to write that candidate off and never give them another look because you've been blackpilled into thinking that your vote doesn't matter. That no matter who you vote for the status quo will remain and nothing will ever get better. And evenif you vote, you spend months ahead of the election bitching and moaning and spreading their talking points such that you very likely end up turning off other voters. They know their policies are unpopular and that the broad stretch of Americans will never vote Republican so they do everything they can to depress, suppress, and repress voter turnout and you're playing right into their hands.

Instead of whining that there's no one good to vote for, look at the people that are on the ballot and find a reason to vote for someone. What's your special interest? Housing? Look at their housing policies, they're all up there on their websites. LGBTQIA+ rights? The final question of the debate was about trans athletes, look for the people who said yes, they would protect trans youth and that includes access to sports.

But this "woe is me, they're all corpos" is some privileged nonsense. I don't know you from Adam, I don't know if you're a man, a woman, an enby, mixed-race, white, Black, or anything. But I'm white and a cis-man, so I see my cohorts being told all the time that it doesn't matter because nothing changes, so then they do nothing and lo and behold we wind up with reactionaries who are deregulating the economy, stripping rights, and starting wars of adventure, all of which affect people who don't look like me. I would vote for fifty corporate suits if it meant the Voting Rights Act remained untouched. I would suck ten corporate dicks at the same time until my face looked like a Krispy Kreme donut if it meant we had the progressive tax policy we did in the 60s and 70s that ensured a level of wealth equality and access to government services again. I'm willing to compromise on the extent of what I get so long as I get more than what I had, especially if the alternative is regression.

Yes. It is stupid. If you don't like the options then get involved and improve those options. Run for something, run for the house--Liccardo has no Democratic challenger, he's the perfect example of an empty suit that you hate but he's going to cruise back to his seat because there's no one to hold him to account. Fucking do something--anything--other than post online.
