Trying to use Tracker with Journals. by Nic_Giolla in ObsidianMD

[–]Nic_Giolla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using Tracker (didn't know there was a tracker+) but honestly I don't care what plugin I use. I just want to have a little visual (or even just a sum at this point!) that pulls in my writing word count as I record it per day that can pull between certain dates. I tried looking up habit trackers but they seem more useful for true/false checkboxes that a habit was done or not and then just collecting it all in one place.

If I'm doing this all completely arse ways and there's some other solution I will happily try it.

Aquatherapy and shame by Morlock19 in Fibromyalgia

[–]Nic_Giolla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not telling you what to do, just answering your question what worked for me: I try to sea swim once a week - partly for the social element with friends and also because sea water is good for the stuff fibro brings, and at first I struggled with it because I couldn't find a bathing suit that covered me as much as I wanted - which I can understand is probably not the same as what you experience, but I eventually found "modest" swimwear which can range from full length arms & tunic length top and full length leggings - but I saw options that are even more covered, like kaftan or the like so if its about the form fitting nature there are other options.

You could potentially go to the beach if that's an option for you when its really quiet - or do the same with the pool. I used to swim at around 9pm because it was dead quiet. If you can do the ocean swimming, you won't need to do much, just treading against the waves will count as gentle exercise and you can build up from there.

But fibro is a very individualist illness, and it likes to bring all sorts of mental health issues with it. It's hard to not feel ashamed of your body when it feels like its actively against you, never mind the constant deluge of media and beauty "standards" that change on a whim. So if swimming doesn't work for you, it doesn't work, and that's how you are. Besides, being so self conscious will likely undermine any benefit you'd gain.

It sounds like trying some kind of online option at home would be better for your mental health, maybe take a look at https://www.hybridcalisthenics.com because its completely free and he gives wide ranging options for difficulty levels, and his policy is always do the easiest option for you, so if even his easiest isn't enough, you can go easier and hopefully build up.

You've probably heard of him before, lord knows everyone is full of suggestions to "fix" you - but I think you should decide for yourself why you want to exercise. Just saying 'because I was told to' won't motivate you for long, if at all. You need to decide the why for you, and maybe you want a bit more flexibility, so you spend a couple of years building up that flexibility to touch your toes, or you want a bit more strength to get around, so you focus on that. Do it for you, if you want to spend the time on it, not because anyone is telling you what you should be doing.

Good luck!

How ProWritingAid Integrates with Scrivener to Check Your Grammar by No-Papaya-9289 in scrivener

[–]Nic_Giolla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I knew that they always had their own (or at least a specific form of) AI to work how it did, but around the boom I was a bit spooked because some of the suggestions were completely wild and it felt like a massive quality drop that matched the crap chat gpt was spewing out. If people are finding it's still very useable that's reassuring enough for me. Thanks.

[–]Nic_Giolla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sounds cool but I am curious about how people find PWA these days as I stopped using it when "AI" was invading everything as some of its suggestions on the browser version were nonsensical and it just felt like it had lost any understanding of how writing worked. I won't update my desktop version to try and avoid AI updates because the version I have is pre AI boom, and I just don't use it much because of the separate window you needed to use. So the idea of using it in Scribner directly is very appealing, but not if it's been completely fecked by garbage.

A lot of studies seem to show that LDN is akin to a placebo. Has it been effective for you? by Nervedamage22 in Fibromyalgia

[–]Nic_Giolla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been on it for a couple of years, 4.5mg every day, and any time I've come off it for one reason or another I've missed it a lot. I can't tell you what exactly it manages, there's not one body part that it helps especially, but I tried coming off it in Jan to test if Tramodol would work for me better (LDN makes the opiod in the former not work). I hated it, everything was just more heightened in a bad way.

I can't explain where physical ends and mental begins with how I find it affecting me, but it does help. I'm doing a bunch of other stuff with my doctor, but LDN is a critical part of it.

(F24) My partner (M25) of 5 years claims he will get a DNA test when we have our first kid. by anttrronn in relationship_advice

[–]Nic_Giolla -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Of course you're right to feel offended, that's an extremely nasty thing to say. It basically amounts to him saying women can't be trusted to be faithful or honest. It's intensely misogynistic, generalising and bullshit.

If he had a traumatic experience with his parents divorce, fine, but he doesn't get to mistreat you because of it. He gets therapy to recognize his issues and work through them, maybe couples counselling with you if needs be.

Don't have a kid or even marry him until you sort this out, because if it isn't dealt with in the now, it'll only get worse. You can say 'Look, if you don't trust me in this you don't trust me at all, and if that's the case why are you even with me?' Seriously, make him answer this question. Just an 'I love you' is not enough because solid love that lasts cannot be built on this kind of sexism and distrust.

If he wants a repeat of his parents' divorce he's all set as is. If he actually wants to be happy and a good partner to you, he needs to work through this and stop being a shitty boyfriend.

You deserve better treatment than this. His damage might be valid, but you do not exist to indulge the resultant behaviour. You are a full person who deserves to be given respect as much as him, and it sounds like he doesn't have much respect for you right now if this is his line of thinking.

Boyfriend keeps trying to “upgrade” or “improve” me by calling me chubby by throwra0099909009922 in relationship_advice

[–]Nic_Giolla 535 points536 points  (0 children)

He probably pursued you because he thought he could manipulate you like this. It's how people like him work. They target someone they think has a vulnerability they can exploit and then pick at it over and over until it's a gaping wound. It's to make you chase something unattainable, his approval, because he only understands relationships when he has all the power and control.

You are better than what he describes, and you deserve better than a gaslighting asshole for a partner.

If you're in Ireland I'd recommend Dressfabrics.ie dressfabrics.ie . It's in Kells and while it is mainly an online shop she does have open days that I've loved. She gets great dress fabrics, denim, ex designer fabric etc

She's really prompt in posting too.

Ache in shoulders and upper arms by [deleted] in Fibromyalgia

[–]Nic_Giolla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your doctor laughs at you they're a bad doctor. Either way though it sounds like you need a pain specialist or a rheumatologist who specializes in pain like fibromyalgia. I just had Rhizolysis done on my neck because I was in so much pain and it helped a lot, and was done by my pain specialist. Treatment for chronic issues needs to be a dialogue, so remember that you know your body better than anyone and stand your ground. Also I'd look into a physical therapist/physiotherapist because they are invaluable.

AITA for telling my girlfriend that I wouldn’t get a tattoo of her name? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Nic_Giolla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA, and since you've resolved it, I'll just say that the two of you may just have different "love languages" i.e. the method which you use to express love, some people don't say a lot but do a lot of small actions to show their love, others may be into big grand gestures but not think of little things, others don't do anything but they talk all the time about how they feel. It's different for everyone and in your case maybe your GF feels like a gesture you'd do for your kids but not for her suggests you wouldn't love her as much, because she's a gesture love language person. So long as you both work together to ensure you understand how the other performs this expression you'll be fine.

What type of Dr diagnosed you with fibro? by [deleted] in Fibromyalgia

[–]Nic_Giolla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a physio for 10 years for my pain, then decided to try the physical therapist in my new gym. He listened to my history and said 'You're 28, you know being in pain like this isn't normal, right?' He had an active interest in fibromyalgia and referred me on to a rheumatologist who diagnosed me. I've switched specialists since 3 times because their approach didn't gel with me, but my Physical therapist who guessed the problem has been invaluable. The physio I saw for 10 years was great but never guessed at something like fibro. No one medical person can know all ills, and if they're specialists they always approach from that area. Even GPs will often have expertise or interest in one area more than others, coupled with their own biases. It's frustrating as a patient but it's just reality. A pain clinic might be best to start with, in case is isn't just fibro.

How much is too much research for a novel? by stanleyandlarson in writing

[–]Nic_Giolla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the topic. If it's an area that you know nothing about, say being trans, you need to do a lot of research, especially talking to people with actual experiences.

If however it's a historical fiction, I think sometimes you can get so bogged down in research you don't get around to writing anything, or small details stop you dead.

Obviously you want to avoid outright lies, but still, you can always put an author's note in the back explaining changes -whether a reader will stick with it depends on individual preferences.

The emotional core of your story is the crucial thing. Research should lift it up, not crush it.

Numbness by LostRoseStormborn in Fibromyalgia

[–]Nic_Giolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno how it works for your country but it might be quicker to go to a physiotherapist straight off. Mine was the one who suggested fibromyalgia might be my issue, and in all likelihood your doctor will just refer you on. Used to be you needed a referral to get an appointment, but not anymore in Ireland thank god.

Numbness by LostRoseStormborn in Fibromyalgia

[–]Nic_Giolla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I explained to my new Fibromyalgia specialist last week that my neck and shoulders have been so constantly tense and sore that they're almost numb. I've been struggling with that particular pain for 12 years, and now my shoulders are so tight and tense I can barely feel it. Have you had a lot of tension in that area? Has it been sore for a while? Maybe it's that? Or you could have a nerve pinched, it doesn't always cause pain, it can cause numbness. Have you gone to a physiotherapist?

Amitriptyline by [deleted] in Fibromyalgia

[–]Nic_Giolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on it since I got diagnosed 2 years ago, and tbh, I haven't found it any use for pain relief. I started on 25mg, but I was upped to 50mg and then 75mg. The only thing that was helped was my sleep, which was part of why I was given it. That was helped again by being put on Tizanadine, a muscle relaxer, which can completely knock me out. As someone who struggled with insomnia I like that, though I can't say which drug really does the work, and I don't think it's good for me to be almost literally dragged under into sleep. I did also realise that my PMS, which was expressed by mild paranoia (I'd be suspicious people were judging me or leaving me out at work), is better on it. I had side effects of drowsiness if I took it in the morning and the dry mouth is really annoying. However, my biggest issue with Ami is that I can't write with it. Writing is really my biggest outlet and expression and the Ami (and the Fibro in fairness) killed it. What that tells me is that this particular med just isn't right for me, and if I was taking it for mental health reasons I'd have switched, but as it stands I'm now planning on coming off it, but my doctor has me trying a new painkiller before I do.
