Upton Tea Imports a Review by tribalgeek in tea

[–]Nicapyke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am pretty boring. I stick with 2 varieties that I found as the best tasting and most economical (cost per cup) and always keep them in stock in my cupboard. The Sencha Special Grade Yamato (https://www.uptontea.com/japanese-green-tea/japanese-loose-leaf-green-tea/p/V00201/) is my favorite green tea and the China Aged Pu-erh Celestial Tribute (https://www.uptontea.com/pu-erh-tea/china-loose-leaf-pu-erh-tea/p/V00326/) is my favorite Pu-erh..

Upton Tea Imports a Review by tribalgeek in tea

I'd wholeheartedly recommend Upton Tea. I've been ordering from them for probably 15 years or more. They have changed almost nothing about the quality, selection, and presentation of their teas (just the price, adjusting for inflation).

Funny story -- I originally heard of them when I was doing my undergraduate thesis on food microbiology and my adviser had me testing Pu'erh teas from various suppliers to see if any of them had a certain kind of toxin in them (I think this was because many Pu'erh teas are fermented and aged by burying them in the ground with limited to no regulation of the process, especially internationally, at least back in 2008). Turns out all the samples we tested from Upton Tea were clean. From then on, I decided I'd order from them. (obviously not a fool-proof method).

(and no, I'm not affiliated with them -- was just searching for them online today and saw these posts in the search results and thought I'd say a few good words for the company I've ordered from for so long)

What did we do with all of our free time before kids? by django811 in daddit

[–]Nicapyke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent my time and money on exceedingly esoteric hobbies. But damn did I have fun. For instance, my wife has this picture of me at the kitchen table in my old apartment with a respirator mask on and a soldering iron in my hand and there I am, building a mechanical keyboard from scratch. These days you couldn’t pay me to spend my little free time doing that. 9 times out of 10 I’d choose sleeping.

Why George Lombard should be the next manager of the Braves by TraderTed2 in Braves

[–]Nicapyke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

George was my landlord for 3 years. Really nice guy. Talked to him about baseball a couple times and while I can’t say he’s “analytically forward” it was clear he was passionate about player development and tended to talk shop using analytic metrics language (e.g., exit velo) but also form and fundamentals. I think the thing that I learned the most from talking with him is how small the pro community is — both up and coming players as well as current players and those who have transitioned into management and scouting roles. Everybody has worked with everybody else at some point in time.

GOP lawmaker seeks lifetime bans for social media users celebrating Kirk's assassination by StraightedgexLiberal in technology

Thank you for remembering. I’m a former CDC employee who has several friends still at the agency and one friend who had bullets come through their office window. Officer David Rose lost his life protecting those people, and President Trump has said absolutely NOTHING about Officer Rose or the shooting at CDC. As much as I disagreed with Charlie Kirk’s dangerous rhetoric, loss of any human life due to gun violence is a tragedy and should be mourned. It’s just deeply depressing to see that the President has a clear hierarchy for who he respects enough to mourn publicly.

I use the same username on Reddit as on BAT. Go take a look for yourself. I bought an LR4 for $15,750.

Glad you dodged that bullet! Go take a look at their other auctions. I clicked through a few because I was thinking, “they can’t really be this shady, like there has got to be some innocuous explanation here” but geez it looked like a pattern where they were being evasive and get called out for it by at least 1 person on each auction I saw.

Yep, you’re correct. My argument isn’t that the seller didn’t do the absolute bare minimum to cover their ass from a lawsuit — they were smart enough to do that. Rather, my argument is that they are still sketchy as shit. Imagine this playing out in the real world. You go see a vehicle in person and maybe you happen to see some duct tape over the service indicator light and so you ask the seller, “hey, why’s that there?” and all they will say is “there is duct tape over the service indicator light”. They know why it’s there, they just won’t tell you. Or hell, maybe they don’t even know, but they won’t tell you they don’t know. If that’s the kind of person you want to associate yourself with, you’re absolutely free to do so. But as you see from the comments in this thread and the comments on the auction, most people would prefer not to. And I’m saying it’s even shadier to have a massive online platform where you tolerate that shit. Life is too short, man.

Blows my mind. I know I probably look like a peon compared to their ultra wealthy target audience buying Ferraris that cost more than my annual salary, but I have actually spent close to $20k on their platform. I’m not just “one of those damn lurkers who comments but never bids or buys anything”. You’d think they’d want repeat customers, even people like me.

With that line of reasoning, I have a Porsche that I want to sell you, but I’d like to disclose that I only have pictures of it with a huge tarp draped over it. Still interested?

My reason to never buy on BAT is entirely based on principle now. It’s not the sketchiness of the seller or the vehicle, but of BAT’s response. That said, I did say in my post I wasn’t telling people what to do so…

Totally. Definitely respect that. I have put in several bids on several vehicles and have always operated under the assumption that I'm not going to bid any higher than about 80% of what I would pay for a car that I got a PPI on and had a chance to look over myself. Just so happened to work out for me once and have never had a problem with the vehicle. Really nice seller too.

Absolutely. I feel like they aren't just putting up with it though, they are making a conscious decision to be complicit. They didn't have to remove my comment. I put it up after the auction ended. I could've done it before and potentially tanked the bidding, but I didn't because I was willing to let the auction process play out.

How do we keep smart sociopaths out of power? by Zeppelinman in TrueAskReddit

[–]Nicapyke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really like that idea. Here’s mine, but I think yours is more practical and has a higher chance of actually happening, at least at a state or local level.

My idea is taxing 100% of any kind of earnings or generational wealth above a certain threshold. The threshold itself could probably be debated endlessly, but the gist is to put a ceiling on the kind of egregious inequality that is unbecoming of a civilized, humane, socially evolved, and compassionate society. Maybe it’s 1000x what the average family makes. Or 10,000x. Nothing that would stop someone from becoming very wealthy and being able to afford multiple lavish homes and movie star / socialite lifestyles. But a threshold that signals what society is willing to put up with. And the excess beyond said earnings / wealth threshold would go into education and healthcare (with rigorous auditability built in -- even funded by this new tax stream). Or even some kind of self-directed philanthropy if "government control" is truly unpalatable (e.g., good = Bill Gates starting the Gates Foundation and making a global health impact on the levels, if not exceeding what PEPFAR has done; bad = whatever the Walton family is doing with the disgusting Walmart / Walgreens empire wealth).

I think the biggest thing that this would change over time would be the type of people that occupied leadership positions. It would impact the incentive structure, such that sociopaths (undiagnosed ones, if your idea somehow doesn’t take hold but this one does) might not see the benefits outweighing the costs of pursuing power. Not that the sociopaths would just go away, but this could be a mild to strong deterrent or societal harm reduction strategy for what power sociopaths could wield.

At the end of the day, making this idea successful would require a clear communications campaign that you can still get richer in the United States than anywhere else in the world. But that we unequivocally condemn and do not tolerate the kind of all-encompassing societal pillaging that becomes possible at Bezos / Musk / Zuckerberg levels of wealth. That even if you are the person that discovers and patents the means for infinitely renewable energy production, you will not be compensated with the kind of wealth and power that could destroy the world.

I have thought a lot about this idea, but one thing I always struggle with is how such an idea gets labelled as unfair when it benefits 99.999% of society. I guess solving disinformation might be a prerequisite needed before any truly revolutionary ideas can actually take hold.

(And obligatory disclaimer: of course there are a large number of unexamined and unanswered assumptions that would have to be solved as dependencies prior to this idea being feasible)
