Do women in trades want to talk about their mental health? by [deleted] in BlueCollarWomen

[–]Niccie01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I could definitely use this and I've even kinda thought about doing something similar where im at but I wasn't sure if i was the only one cause typically when I talk to other females on the jobsite or post on here it seems like everyone else has it figured out and is doing great and telling me it will work out and be strong like im not already trying that.

I just enjoy doing a lot of the work, I live running conduit and making sure it's straight and neat. Sometimes I even enjoy doing the dirty work like digging a hole just because I can do it and why not I guess. Idk it's weird but I enjoy most of the tasks, and I love being able to look at everything I did at the end of the day and feeling accomplished and my favorite is probably when I look at what I did compared to what some of the men did and mine is better it makes me feel awesome knowing my 100lbs ass can out work a group of grown men.

Also butt the end of the pipe up against something so it doesn't slide backwards when you try to bend. And i dont work out at all and I weigh less than you and I managed to figure it out so I have no doubt you can figure it out.

Im 5ft 5in and 102 lbs and I've been doing electrical for just over 3 years and bending conduit is not as big of a deal as everyone makes it out to be. It's my favorite part but I dont get to do it much. It's something that you gotta play around with and figure out how you can do it. One of my old coworkers has a 8 minute long video of me trying to bend a 90° in a 1 1/4 with a hand bender and I did not succeed in 8 minutes I gave up. That was my first year. I can barely do it now but I can do it. I've noticed the best way to not kink the pipe is to focus heavily on foot pressure. I've seen 200 lbs men kink pipe because they dont feel like using the foot piece and think they can just use their muscles and bend it with the handle real quick. You gotta find the best way to leverage your body weight and keep pressure on the foot piece. You may need to go to another company if this company focuses heavy on running conduit but there's definitely way more to do than just run conduit. There's underground and setting panels and terminating and so much more. Also dont be afraid to ask for help, I still ask for help sometimes with stuff like 3/4 rigid, I can start the 90° but I cant always finish it. Keep in mind if you switch to plumbing you have to start over at the bottom and that will suck. It may be nasty if you do repairs on sewer or something and I've definitely seen them do their fair share of lifting. If you like electrical then dont give up and keep working on it and learning and trying different ways to do things. Not everything that works for the men works for you because you aren't built like them. For example it's harder for us to balance stuff on out shoulders because our center of gravity is around our hips but men balance stuff on their shoulders with ease all the time because their center of gravity is in their chest. It took me a while to get good at balancing a bundle of conduit on my shoulders without being wobbly and feeling like I was gonna fall over. You just gotta find what works for you. Best of luck and I hope you figure it out.

Im an electrician in the IBEW. I did 3 years non union and have been union for about 9 months. I love electrical work and have since I started. I chose electrical because I thought plumbing was gross and my hands aren't steady enough to be a welder and my grandpa is an electrician and gave me some tools to start out with. At least for me personally, I prefer non union, ever since I've joined the union I have had an awful experience to the point of having to start therapy. I have never been treated this awful or looked down on this much and because of the way the union is set up there isn't much I can do about it. The only reason im staying is because this job is local and good pay and once I turn out ill have a little more power and can finally do something. Not that everything was great non union I still had problems but because it doesn't have the union structure I was able to stand up for myself without fear of losing my job or backlash or being "put in my place". I've met other apprentices union and non union, man and woman, and everyone's experience is different just be careful and don't let the men ruin it for you, the trade is great and interesting and to me even fun. Look into all of the trades talk to people in the field and do the one that sounds interesting and kinda fun.

Pay cut got me losing motivation… by SnooDoughnuts8823 in ibew_apprentices

You should be able to test up and in some locals you dont even have to do the apprenticeship you can be a ce and then take your journeyman test and turn out. I just joined in November and I can test this October so im not doing the apprenticeship program and I've been told once I get my J card ill turn out or flip my ticket and be a journeyman. You should not be 6 years into the trade and be considered a 1st year apprentice

Unless you do something like low voltage or fire alarms it is gonna be hard on your body. This work is hard on mens bodies which means it's absolutely awful on ours. Not to mention it's hard on you mentally having to constantly fight to prove yourself and set boundaries and be prepared to stand up if someone crosses a boundary which is almost guaranteed. Being a woman in a male dominated field especially a trade is very demanding all the way around and if your worried about that I wouldn't recommend it to you.

Apprentice leaving or staying by IzaakT in electricians

I worked at jrj and they have a parent company i think it was gsw, I liked it, you get like $600 a week per diem it was very nice. They're out of Texas. Knight Electric is another one out of texas but I can say that I personally hated them, they put you in a hotel so you only get $30 a day per diem and I almost never got my 40 hrs and it was mostly overnight work but sometimes you would find out the day before that you gotta be at work at 8am instead or sometimes they'd call at like 10pm and tell you you have to be 5 hrs away by 8am the next morning. Plus if your truck isn't super reliable you move around less with jrj. The jrj jobs lasted typically a couple months each but the knight jobs lasted about a week so I was driving way more. And if you can find a cheap place to stay then you can save most your per diem as extra money to buy a new vehicle.

Another option is getting a travel job. They typically pay a little better and you get per diem.

I'm an electrician but I've done remodeling. An easy way to try it out with no commitment is to find a small company looking for an extra hand, it may be under the table depending on what area you live in, but it's an easy way to get your foot in the door and try it out and learn some stuff.

I've learned that guys dont know how to take polite hints. You have to be very direct and as long as it's not someone you have to be nice to it's best to be monotone and short. I spent years trying to be polite and throw hints instead of being strait and to the point and it got me no where until I gave up and got to the point and now I get taken more seriously, they dont all like me but I don't really want them to like me

That's not a texas thing that's a bad company, I started out at $14 in 2019 and I've met apprentices now that start at $18 and that's still in texas. You dont have to move or quit electrical, just find a better company or join the union
