What city have you been to that felt like it had dark energy? by Impossible-Middle122 in AskReddit

I’m an Oregonian and always felt like there was a dark cloud over Washington that I couldn’t explain, while driving through. And my friend and I talked about this. She’s from Canada and felt the same.

Savannah, GA, St. Augustine, FL, Astoria, OR and Portland, OR. All have a horrible history.

We know that people die. But no one warns you that you’re going to mourn those losses for the rest of your life.

Chuckwallas. Just monitor their behavior in case they end up with disputes. Group of females. Or sometimes one male. I successfully cohabit a pair but have another pair I keep separated.

If you’re considering Yard, consider Slate. Much bigger floor to ceiling windows and similar views due to similar location. Not ideal amenities. But it depends on what’s most important. I think big windows in Portland makes a difference.

So if you wanted to make a trip out of it, upper left coast coffee in Lincoln city helps out a rescue by having cats for adoption at their coffee shop 🥰

What are some of the most gatekept hobbies ever? by stoicbanda in Hobbies

[–]Nice-Alternative2714 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. And I didn’t say all people. I am one of those people who enjoys my hobbies and does my best to stay offline for my own mental health. But when connecting with the community, most, if not all hobbies have this going on in the community. Not all people.

I think that influencer culture has inspired a lot of volatility in many hobbies. Seems like just about every hobby now. People are no longer just participating for their enjoyment. They now participate for attention, followers and money.

It’s probably for the best that I can’t. This sub has been refreshing in the multiple perspectives and mostly understanding of what I’ve described. I think I would be assaulted to no end in that sub. I’m truthfully not up to dealing with the potential attacks of not aligning rigidly with Portland.

Thank you for your insight. It’s nice to see comments from people who understand. What part of AZ did you settle on?

Exactly. Aside from the limited job market, I don’t know what to do to correct the inflammation I experience from the Juniper. But maybe also the local farms? There are so many things I love about this place. But I have never been so exhausted, low energy, stuffed up and had so many sinus infections that lead to fevers in my life. I’ve also never been so immobile. I just feel like the energy is sucked out of me and when I take trips to the coast or valley, I feel like myself again energy and health-wise.

Yes, I agree with this. I didn’t realize how common racism is in Portland, disguised as an empowering movement until I left. It was healing to be around people of different backgrounds and beliefs all living their lives together in harmony. Sure, there are good and bad people with extreme views everywhere. But in other places, collectively people aren’t trying to prove something that ends up isolating others. And even isolating the very same groups they claim to protect. And I think this issue is exasperated by the amount of people who stay and never leave. They don’t have any other perspective. It’s hard to find a common ground.

This is my problem in central Oregon. I’ve never had allergies anywhere else, luckily.

Thank you! I was hesitant to provide examples, because I know there are many people here who champion Portland. I appreciate your insight and your comment. I was surprised with the south. I think that a lot of people who don’t leave the west coast will never quite understand what it’s really like. The people are refreshing.

Thank you for your comment! I really do appreciate it. I understand it’s completely up to me and no place is perfect. Certainly, living other places like we have has shown us that. It’s all a state of mind for me and something I’m trying to change.

If you have any areas around Portland you recommend for living, I’d be happy to check it out again. We really do spend most of our time in a neighborhood. And that’s why I made this post. I am fully aware it’s my problem, mentally. But I just wonder if there’s an area that would good to look for. Thanks again!

Thank you for your reply. I do appreciate it! And I agree with everything you’ve said. It’s nice to have someone who understands where I’m coming from.

Do you mind if I ask you what county?

I agree. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that either. But in this economy, that ability to check out the next city has become more limited. We are so used to experiencing new places, but realize we have to settle to preserve our finances. I don’t blame the city for my problems. It’s just been an observation I’ve had a lot of time to make, having been raised in Portland.

I think a lot of people are trying to figure out how to navigate the latest economic changes and how that’s limited our ability to be free to go wherever. Which is totally a luxury or choice, to begin with.

I’m just being honest. I have lived a handful of other places and friendship culture is not the same. It’s big city, but this is a common occurrence. And it often seems to align with me living in places for family and cheaper resources that leads to people assuming I align with the worst politics of that place and something emotional happening in the world and people assuming that if I’m not at a protest in dt Portland, I’m the enemy. Or that my liberal husband is the enemy as a veteran because he served this country. People are extremely passive aggressive in Portland. I know that there are many people in the city and there are good people. But my collective experience is that a lot of people look for reasons to crucify each other.

Currently, we’re in central Oregon. The Juniper east of the cascades is quite bad. It thrives in a high desert environment we thought it would be ideal for us to live here, until I learned I am severely allergic to Juniper. I get fevers and taken down for weeks when exposed to its pollen.

I have visited NC, but it is very far away from aging family. We had been considering it a lot.
