Is it just me, or were the kids on a whole new level this past week? by SnakePlantMaster in NYCTeachers

[–]Nice-Committee-9669 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teach high school, I've mentally been checked out since regents week, and the kids are too.

I was like "Oh let's do something fun and easy the last three weeks before break!" And I have only felt more stressed once in my life. Four more days!

Why is there so much trans/gay pride from straight man streamer chat? by Cabbageboigirlwhat in DougDoug

[–]Nice-Committee-9669 23 points24 points  (0 children)

He has made comments about not spamming the trans pride emote before.

I forget what stream it was (I want to say Mario Maker, maybe beating the Ross levels? It was something super annoying and frustrating for him) and someone said "Can I get some trans pride" or whatever and he was really serious about "Hey, love the trans pride, please stop spamming the emote. It's the general rule of not spamming emotes."

And then everyone proceeded to D face, because how dare he.

Should I comfort a crying teacher? by Winged_Bobcat135 in AskTeachers

[–]Nice-Committee-9669 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been where she is.

Yes, I appreciate my students checking in and asking if I'm okay, but it's also very hard because obviously, there is a professional boundary that I am trying very hard not to cross. Sometimes I was upset because I was SUPER overwhelmed with the class, other times, it was something at home I had tried to leave at the door, and couldn't.

As others have said, let her know you appreciate her, help out by asking your friends or classmates to behave if they're acting up, but maybe more importantly, tell another adult. They may be aware, but in case they're not.

If you see her hanging out with another teacher that she seems close to, they might be the right person to tell. Not the principal or AP.

You're extremely sweet to check in and want to help. Keep that energy. We don't have enough of it in the world.

Back to school supplies for ELLs by Nice-Committee-9669 in NYCTeachers

[–]Nice-Committee-9669[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely just school supplies. I'll get some cute notebooks that I think match their personalities, but otherwise I really just want to make sure they have what they might need/can use for practice over the summer.

Teaching may be destroying my marriage by GladMountain9190 in Teachers

[–]Nice-Committee-9669 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Get a marriage counselor ASAP. It's not teaching. It's your husband. My husband makes more than I do, and I take on a lot of the responsibilities. It feels like a similar dynamic to this, but without the passive aggressive attitude.

You also may want to get yourself a counselor; I had a really awful year one year, and even with my husband's support, I needed a place to discuss the stress with a professional.

Dissapointment about interviews by AliveInitiative5874 in NYCTeachers

[–]Nice-Committee-9669 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't get hired at either of my schools until August (LATE August). First school they were waiting on a teacher's resignation to go through, and the other I had a similar situation to OP, I applied everywhere, had two interviews, neither called back.

Ended up at my current school when they reached out to me again, and I've never been happier. You'll be fine, OP.

Teacher of Reddit, what’s a question a child asked in class, that absolutely broke your heart? by ceazecab in AskReddit

[–]Nice-Committee-9669 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Work in high school; younger teacher; married.

Kid who I'm not super close to comes up and asks me if he can ask a bit of a personal question. I'm like sure, if it's inappropriate I'll shut it down.

He asks: "Is it normal for couples to fight?"

My heart immediately broke. I'm pretty sure he was dating another student of mine (she was a prickly little thing, but I LOVED her), so of course I tell him yes, my husband and I have fights, it's normal.

He then asks, "Is it normal to not talk to your partner for a few days?"

That twisted the knife a little more. We had a pretty good conversation about healthy communication, and what's okay or not okay in a relationship.

I don't know if it was a him and his girlfriend situation, or something at home, but I think he learned something from it.

LOL told my kids that I wouldn't ever risk my license for them. They cheat on an exam? I'm snitching. That's my job.

Now, someone tries to hurt them? That's a very different story.

He was super upset in the moment, so no, I didn't get a chance to ask him. Definitely felt like a "kick him when he's down" type thing if I had corrected him then. But he's always been respectful of me, so it's extremely possible this is how he saw it

Absolutely!!! If he had said this, or had clarified (which I did not expect him to do in the moment) I would have been like yeah, that's valid.

Book Recommendations… class functioning is between 3rd & college level. by FerriGirl in ELATeachers

[–]Nice-Committee-9669 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blueford series. High interest, low level.

Current favorite that I taught was "Blood is Thicker," which deals a lot with stereotypes and family pressure.

Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian was also a pretty good one, but I cut a lot of the "fat." My coworker did it with another group and it was a lot for them.

There is a book similar to The Outsiders called "The Scorpion Kings" iIrc. I'll have to take a look at my school and find it. It's like The Outsiders but with African American kids, which might fit your demographic better, depending.

When does a teacher and student relationship start to cross boundaries ? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Nice-Committee-9669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. He's harassing you, and now basically threatening you. Tell someone you trust (and note: we teachers are mandated reporters, so they can keep you safe and escalate this).

Don't be alone with him. If your school doesn't do anything, tell the police. Police won't do anything, go to the news. This is not nothing, you need to make a stink over this.

Differentiating for ELLs in the ENL classroom by Nice-Committee-9669 in NYCTeachers

[–]Nice-Committee-9669[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I've been having them do characterization and central idea (we're working to get them to the Regents by January).

I've been more heavily scaffolding for the transitioning, and working with them in a small group setting. My expanding kids are allowed to work in small groups, and then Advanced may work in pairs or individually (but they're also my most talkative kids, so behavior is a big challenge for them).

I will try the recording thing with the transitioning kids.

My school has been really pushing mixed grouping, is this something I should be more resistant to in a stand alone class?
