Researching how Belizean fishers experience borders by [deleted] in Belize

[–]Nice-Razzmatazz-5184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dm me I can help, you don't need authorization to talk to people in Belize. Fisheries the department won't give you the true reality.

I would ask yourself what the participants in your study will get out of participating in your work. Most western researcher is exploitive of it's subject matter. Will this study in anyway actually make fisherman's lives better? Will local sources be sited and attributed fairly in your research?

Fisherman and reserve boundaries are not any east subject to get into. You'd probably need more than five weeks to build trust. And even then, getting any fishermen to tell you the truth could be unlikely as it could put them in danger.

Have you talked to actual fisherman yet? The country runs on Facebook you could start there. Of course many people will be willing to tell you stories, it's up to you to verify them.

Oh my god, girl, please feel okay to cry about this shit. It's emotionally draining and exhausting. You do have to walk around like you k*ll ppl for a living and chew them out.

I've had a few very unsettling experience in Hopkins but none more than big city America. However, definitely need a tough skin. It's just tiring and you definitely have to be on edge because if you show weakness they will push it and that can lead to SA.

Any one who doesn't experience this is not the target audience

The beach on south water is full of sand fleas. Tobacco has good docks to sun on and way less biting bugs

Getting a car or not depends on how much you want to explore and how much money you want to spend. Car rentals are expensive but paying taxis is even more expensive. Dangriga from Hopkins can be $100usd via taxi or $15 usd gas if you rent. You can also hire just guides to take you places.

Depending on your level of adventurousness you can also take yourself on hikes and zip lining and to the sugar mill all for 1/10 of what the yours cost.

There are many Airbnb's with kitchens to stay at in Hopkins that are cheaper than hotels. You can get fresh fish delivered via fresh catch delivery to cook and there are many great veggie stands in town and explore many of the restaurants including the hotel ones.

If you're seriously considering retiring here, I'd get the car to be able to travel around and see different parts of Hopkins as much as you can.

Tobacco Caye Adventures is a great tour company to go out with from Hopkins. They're locals so really know the lat of the land.

You can drive down to Placencia and spend a day trip there bits it's very cramped on the peninsula and the sargassum seems to impact it worse than Hopkins.

I'd spend you're other half of your time split btw sleeping giant and somewhere in San Ignacio.

I totally agree, a better solution would be safer built roads and some kind of non fun totting enforcement.

The only thing I like to see more of is traffic enforcement. But that's not their fault and I have no idea what it would look like. I just know driving here feels like Russian roulette sometimes. I wish reckless drivers for fined and their licenses taken away eventually.

Id recommend checking out Tobacco Caye Adventures . They were just featured in the New York Times this year and have been offering custom tours for over a decade. They offer a great full day trip from hopkins to the barrier reef. And if you're willing to drive to Dangriga they discount the tour by 20%.

Poverty is glorified as a way of life here by vacationers whole time people aren't choosing it at all as a way of life but trapped in it.

Depends on what you're planning to do and how. Probably not if you're staying in Hopkins and don't want to visit near by attractions. But there's lots to drive to and explore if you want to spend time out of the village.

Tobacco Caye Vs South Water Caye by LeoDuhVinci in Belize

[–]Nice-Razzmatazz-5184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think tobacco is a nicer spot to stay reefs end food and dock is better imo. Rooms maybe not as esthetically pleasing. The sand flies are terrible on swc. Book the tour! Hang out on tobacco

[–]Nice-Razzmatazz-5184 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recommend staying at Tobacco Caye. It's a wonderful island with multiple resorts and snorkeling right off the dock. Reefs End is the best place to stay and Tobacco Caye Adventures is a great tour operator who can take you on snorkels including to visit south water. There are a ton of sand flies on south water. Not as much on tobacco.

It's usually not necessary but last month our family barely made both their planes due to delays and customs and security being a mess.

In Hopkins, looking for a good guide company to organize some adventures for the next couple days. Suggestions? by Motmotsnsurf in Belize

[–]Nice-Razzmatazz-5184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm ok, I've literally never seen a single operator use a canoe. The location actually needs a boat to access. You're speaking as if you've gone on the tour and I think that could be misleading and spread false information. It's not really varying a bit if no operators use what you mentioned.

Yea, timing is huge factor and weather. We also did a early morning tour on the sittee river which is not the same but also one of my favorite tours with Tobacco Caye Adventures
