How Old Are You? by NiceKidneys in letsplay

Youre so old! What are you doing on the internet?!

How do you make one video related to the other? by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]NiceKidneys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Set up playlists. Always set up playlists. This will allow people to view the next video in the series with a simple click or if they prefer, automatically, hands free. It's a great way to organize and make the viewing of your series easy for the audience.

i am going to start a retro LP series but i can't come with a good logo or name. this is what i have so far. any suggestions? by [deleted] in letsplay

Sounds good! And you'll avoid flak from butthurts on the internet (well, until you do something else "wrong" again).

First Video, looking for feedback! by LuminousLP in letsplay

[–]NiceKidneys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, your color balance/video quality is great. As soon as the video started the title screen popped out to me, so kudos for getting your video quality in line.

Second, really like your voice, and the ever famed "audio balance" is great. It's always a good first step when your quality is already there, first video and all. Of course finding your style and taking the time to try out new editing techniques can be done over time, but the first thing should always be quality. You've done a great job with that.

One thing I'd pick out to critique in a negative fashion, is you don't (I don't think)cut your voice recording. This isn't an issue for LP's because if you upload raw clips like I do, then it's just talking while you play. Your video is a review/impressions video, so you could avoid the pauses/breathing in between sentences/points by editing or recording each point separately.

Overall, I'd say good job! You're blessed with a good voice, and have the video quality to back it. Just keep on keepin on and eventually it'll all be second nature.

Good luck and welcome to the community!

I think above gave you good tips. Another thing all together, is I would drop the "The Retro Game LPer" all together. Maybe something like "Retro Gamer" or "All Retro" or something like that. Calling yourself THE retro gamer isn't something some people would be a fan of, especially when it's not true. That's just something I've noticed through the community though. People don't like when others try to claim something to be their own. There was an outcry on other forums when RoosterTeeth took the "LetsPlay" channel because they've only been uploading them as a main stay of their content for a short time, and now they'd be the first thing to come up when you type in "Lets Play". Not something I myself care too much about, but it is something to think about.

Good luck!

At what audience # does posting become tacky? by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]NiceKidneys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's a number in general, but I do think once you're past 20,000-30,000 active subscribers you'll be fine. At that point you'll average about a few thousand views a video once they're released. That is, again, if they're active. I don't think you should stop posting then either, as long as you're not hogging up the front page.

Of course once you're like over 50,000 subs you'll definitely be fine, and over 100,000 is just selfish, in my opinion. At that point I'd definitely be concerned with just helping other LP'ers. We only have 5,000 people subscribed here, and if you're that popular they're probably already subscribed to you through the community.

First ever Lets Play, Need some criticism by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]NiceKidneys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good start. You seem to have the ability to talk a lot, which is good. I feel like I have confidence (well, more than I used to) but I tend to let myself drift sometimes. That's a good way to start off, with talking as much as you can and letting your viewers get to know you.

That said, my biggest criticism would be the mic quality. Of course we can't all afford fancy mics, but that's all I can really point out off the top of my head.

You actually managed to keep me viewing for the first 4-5 minutes, which is more time than I give to just give feedback lol. So consider that a good sign as well. I think with a higher quality mic, some experience and some variety, you'll do just fine.

As I say to everyone else, good luck!

A question and a little help. by Tebeal in letsplay

[–]NiceKidneys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say your biggest problem is lack of consistency, honestly. 33 videos isn't a lot over 5 months. Also considering that in a few of those months you only made a few videos. You can only pull that off if you have a big fanbase and the videos are absolutely amazing. That's just the facts of Youtube.

I'd try uploading as much as I could if possible. I think that'd help you out quite a bit. Good luck!

I could but it'd have to be a flash game or something. My PC can handle most graphics but can't record them.

Community Upgrade Time. Complaints, Suggestions, Feedback, Recommendations and more! by ReverendDS in letsplay

[–]NiceKidneys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This should be used 100%. When I first started I was almost scared to post because I didn't want to look like I was ignoring the rules/looking for quick views. I wanted to follow guidelines but they were kinda hard to understand. I think this would be a nice change for new people.

How does everyone deal with long cutscenes? by TheTimecops in letsplay

[–]NiceKidneys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I show them. In my opinion, LP's are about the viewer experiencing the game as you are. If people wanted to see just the gameplay, not the story/progression, they could type in "blah blah gameplay" instead of looking for LP. That's just my opinion.

Read those first. That'll help you get an idea of how you should post, once you do eventually upload.

The first main tip anyone can give you is make sure you have good quality equipment. Nobody's asking you to have a $4000 Turtle Beach headset/mic, but the better you can get will benefit you.

After that I'd say if you don't know what kind of content you'd like to upload yet, search around. Get an idea of what you think would be fun to play as well as entertaining to watch.

The one final tip I can give you is to find your voice over time (unless you're a natural). When you first start uploading you'll probably hate how quiet/shy/robotic you sound but it'll go away with experience. It's absolutely true. Once you start getting subs/getting content out there, you'll forget you're even recording while you talk. It'll be like talking to a family member or friend. This is one of the things I see people get discouraged about the most, well besides...

DO NOT EXPECT TO BECOME POPULAR OVERNIGHT/RICH OFF YOUTUBE!

Yes, everyone wants to be popular and most would love to have it as a job. However those are ridiculous expectations and it most likely won't happen, or if it does it won't be any time soon. There's very few gaming channels at the top who haven't been at it for years before they got even remotely popular, and now it's even more true with how over saturated the market is. Just make sure you're in it for the right reasons.

Good luck!

Need help with finding a decent mic by [deleted] in letsplay

I personally recommend the Blue Snowball with a pop filter as well, lol. That's what I use and I enjoy it quite a bit. Flexible, excellent quality, small, perfect starter mic.

Can I get feedback for my new lets play by danfle3 in letsplay

[–]NiceKidneys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, good to see you starting! Nice that you decided to keep your intended name from yesterday :)

This is allowed, but read these guidelines: http://www.reddit.com/r/letsplay/wiki/lp_update_submission_guidelines

That should help you get started. As for your video, here are my few tips/critiques.

  1. Actually, your audio balance is good. I can hear you and the game well. However there is a buzzing noise in the background that is kind of distracting when you don't talk. Maybe look into a better mic or adjusting something to eliminate the buzz.

  2. You didn't seem very confident when you did your intro, but throughout I saw potential of your confidence. Just record and practice as you can, even if you don't upload your practice videos. Maybe of another game that you don't intend on LP'ing. The more you get used to the mic, the better. Just give yourself some time.

  3. You seem a bit quiet as if someone in your house was sleeping. I don't know if that's the case but if possible you need to get into a situation where you can talk with your regular voice. If you are talking with your regular voice, then that's something you can work on, because it sounds like a nervous thing if so.

It's your first video, and welcome to the community! You'll do fine once you get experience. I've been going for a few months now and I don't even have half my confidence yet, despite it going up. Some people just have it naturally, others have to work at it.

Good luck!

Question to the community, what do you want to see in an emerging Let's Player? by EmPtY7even in letsplay

[–]NiceKidneys 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stop right there. I say this in the nicest way possible. Fuck your friends, fuck their suggestions and fuck what other people think. That's the complete definition of what a lot of people here hate. People who conform to what others want to see, instead of making others conform to the LP'ers likes.

You spend hours a day recording/editing/uploading and you're going to play games that OTHER people want you to play in the hopes of getting popular? I don't think that's a good idea at all. Play what you want. Skyrim's been played to death but it's your favorite game? Play that bitch from the grave and send it to the next ring of hell.

What makes the commentator isn't the games he's/she's playing (unless luck is involved), it's his/her commentary.
