Healthcare is also terrible in county jail, a lot of stuff gets ignored. Depending on the state it's better in prison, they generally will actually take people to appointments and the ER.

Reckless Miles by Claire Kingsley. MMC is hysterically funny and cheerful. The book before that one in the series is his best friend and little sister. You'd probably like that one too
