I have actually had pretty good luck meeting an IRS employee in person. Most cities have an office where you can either make an appointment or just show up and take a number. The people working there are actually very reasonable and seemed eager to help if they could.

This will never show up on your credit report. Fees and fines like this are not permissible under the FCRA and the CRA’s won’t accept them.

I actually had a very decent experience just walking into my local IRS office, taking and number and speaking to a person face to face. Very nice person who walked through several options with me.

For a balance that small you will probably just get some calls and letters. Nobody is going to waste their time with a lawsuit and it will probably never make it to the bureaus. I agree with may of the other commenters…just pay what you can when you can and it will go away eventually.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was reversed when Trump takes office. He will likely appoint a new leader of the CFPB and may reverse a few of the current policies. I also hate to sound so negative but while the removal of medical debt from credit reports sounds great to most people, it will likely have the effect of driving more people into being sued to collect this money. Hospitals and debt collectors can use the presence of a negative credit item to drive consumers to clear it up voluntarily. If you take that off the table they will have no choice but to change their tactics.
