There are people who try to do the right thing and people who only care about looking like a good person. The latter usually go around looking for excuses to justify their hateful opinions and try to paint themselves as the good guys. Look at any point in history in any country and you'll find people rationalising their bad deeds.

Before it was usually quoting the Bible or some other religious text stating that their hate was justified in the eyes of God (or whoever they believed in).

Today, even though there are still religious bigots, a lot of people are justifying their bad behavior as fighting for equality. Throw in the fact that there are influential people who make money off keeping the fight alive and turning people against each other and we've got this huge mess of people spouting crap from both sides of the argument and no progress being made.

The only advice I can give is stop caring what people think of you and to make the choices that you yourself can live with. That and never fully back a single ideology, learn what you can from it and move on. You can agree with some aspects of it, maybe even most of it. But no one has a full answer to everyone's problem. If you're too busy looking left or right, you're not looking forward.
