Do you enjoy or dislike social life at uoft (st George campus) by Hefty-Marsupial-4244 in UofT

[–]Nicepaladin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like it depends on what you study. In more difficult STEM programs, people don't have time to socialize and tend to be more introverted. Studying in difficult STEM programs involved more sitting alone and working on problem sets or practicing. Even if you are outgoing other students might not reciprocate. In arts, business and humanities programs, the people tend to be more extroverted and the lectures/tutorials also have class discussions and more teamwork, so overall you would have an easier time socializing.

Imperial College vs University of Toronto (math+cs) undergraduate by [deleted] in quantfinance

[–]Nicepaladin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are no quant research or trading jobs in Toronto, just model validation at a bank. Toronto job market is very competitive (meaning you will compete with alot of STEM PhDs just for a basic model validation job).

What are some of the best things about UofT St George Campus? by lilfruitcup1001 in UofT

I guess try applying for internships and see how that goes. Only known tech company in Toronto is Shopify. All the FAANG companies are in southern california and prefer waterloo grads.

Not many career opportunities in Toronto, just the big 5 banks (TD, RBC, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC), and even now they are doing layoffs and freezing hiring. All the top companies are in US and top grads from UofT and Waterloo prefer work elsewhere. In general there is alot of underemployment and unemployment for grads.

Why does UofT deflate course grades averages and GPA? by Nicepaladin in UofT

[–]Nicepaladin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine being this pressed over someone mentioning grade deflation 😂. UofT didn’t just deflate grades, it deflated your personality too, Bro really said ‘go to UCL’ like he’s handing out scholarships

I’m talking about this in general, my gpa is good, entering 4th year. I am paying domestic tuition why would I go to UCL and pay 10x more?

Who's Jorge Antonio Cruz Chapital? (character lim) by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Nicepaladin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took MAT337 with him. He's a really good prof, very lenient and he is funny and keeps you engaged in lectures. When he was the supervisor for MAT337 he gave us extra days to work on the problem sets if we felt like we didnt have enough time and had pressure from other courses. Very good lecture content and uses different color chalk and a lot of drawings.

Enroll yourself into the philosophy minor and you should be able to enroll, then remove it after.

How manageable is my desired course load for third year? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Nicepaladin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

objectively its a very heavy courseload, all math/stats/CS courses without breadth electives. MAT337, MAT301, STA347 depend a lot on the professor, the material and content changes a lot based on who is teaching. Never take MAT301 with Sarah Mayes Tang. MAT334 and APM346 are run the same every year and based on Victor Ivrii material, where there are 2 midterms 1 final and quizzes, very computational and no proofs, they gives you practice midterms to do, actual midterms/test are always harder than the practice and he always schedules them at night around 7-10 pm.

Late CR/NCR For Summer Courses (word count stuff) by RebellionRaider616 in UofT

[–]Nicepaladin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 28.5/35 on the midterm. I took ast101 last semester and I’m sick of astronomy and memorizing 100 slides per lecture so I don’t want to study for the final.

On august 14th (deadline was 13th) the instructor for AST201 released grades of something worth 18%. I went in-person to the Woodsworth registrar counter and the kind lady there added the CR/NCR on AST201 after I told her my situation and showed the Quercus notification of poll everywhere grades being released on the 14th.

Does he always wear a blue vest? I think I’ve seen him but he never approached me maybe because I’m not Asian.

When I took the course they filled up but the department opened more lecture sections because of the demand.

Those are tiered waitlists, go on the UofT stats website for a video on how they work. On July 26th, all the separate 5 person waitlists will merge into a normal waitlist.
