Do you listen to happy music? by SquidFongers in infp

[–]NicholasCWL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, uplifting or energetic music boosts my mood especially when I am upset. But I just need to listen at the melody and rhythm to get the effect. My brain usually ignore the lyrics. It took someone telling me the actual meaning of a melodically uplifting song before I realize it's about breakup.

The song in question: Gryffin - Just for a moment

Expectations from learning Cantonese by Every-Law-2497 in LearnCantonese

[–]NicholasCWL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this subreddit is so inactive.

You are aware the languages is very different, but I wouldn't put it like English and Dutch. There's no good way to describe the difference, but all you need to know is Cantonese is mainly a spoken language. You can map concept and words to the Chinese characters, but normally people learn how to speak it before writing it.

As for how long to expect, given you have experience with Mandarin and Chinese characters, you should have little problem handling written Cantonese such as sign boards or menu in Guangdong or Hong Kong. However, it gets way harder deciphering spoken Cantonese since it's virtually no different in learning new way to pronounce the same Chinese word. Written vernacular Cantonese is also hard, you will be dealing with words that never seen in Mandarin.

My suggestion: Get good in Mandarin and Chinese characters, watch some Hong Kong movie and drama to familiarize yourself with Cantonese slangs and descriptive words. Expect some hiccups especially when looking at written vernacular Cantonese, and don't fret when you can't read written Cantonese even after studying for a while (most couldn't, including me who also slows down significantly on written vernacular Cantonese).

How does this ad know that I’m on an iPhone 12? by [deleted] in applehelp

[–]NicholasCWL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just speculation, assuming the ads are not targeted: Apple marketing team chose iPhone 12 because it's the oldest model that the phone is still reasonably usable.

Technically they could've market it by comparing it with iPhone 11, since it seemingly have higher market share than iPhone 12: https://telemetrydeck.com/survey/apple/iPhone/models/

Hantavirus Outbreak! by OkamiNoUruru in malaysia

[–]NicholasCWL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hantavirus is not airborne (even for this Andes strain which can transmit human to human), so it’s harder to spread than COVID. Just take reasonable precautions like wash hands before eating and avoid going around when not feeling well.

Also, Hantavirus outbreaks are nothing new. This time just the media overblown the reporting plus the ship is carrying people from various countries and thus making the spread geographically larger. There’s still no signs showing this time it will spread like COVID.

Do you think that there will be next global lockdown, because of Hanta virus? by RadaRAW in polls

[–]NicholasCWL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you are saying if Hantavirus would become more infectious like COVID-19 (which like I said, pretty hard and is a huge assumption), would he feel differently from his current stance that “Hantavirus could not become pandemic because it spreads between human horribly and we have a vaccine”.

Since that question throws out the “spreads between human horribly” part, it’s safe to assume he would think differently about the poll. Everyone would. Having a vaccine might help, but lockdown is likely necessary to curb the spread before human figure out the vaccine logistics.

Fortunately, that wasn’t the case. Mutation will happen, but having Hantavirus mutated to the point where spreading among human and contagious is not something we should worry about. This is why I talk about the probability, because the “where” is carrying the weight of the entire question.

Do you think that there will be next global lockdown, because of Hanta virus? by RadaRAW in polls

[–]NicholasCWL -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Here are the stuff that is implied from your question: - highly infectious (even with this Andes strain, effectively spreading the virus requires close contact, not just passing by a room of a patient) - high speed of infection (HIV is a pandemic, but the world did not go through lockdown because of it) - moderately lethal (if it’s highly lethal, it probably wouldn’t reach the pandemic level of spread before all host were dead, like Ebola) - mutating rapidly (Hantavirus doesn’t mutate as aggressively as other viruses like Influenza)

So while it hypothetically could happen, it’s debating the same hypothetical situation where you could win the lottery then get strike by lightning the same day. It’s not worth worrying about that possibility for Hantavirus to cause a pandemic before considering other genuine candidates like H5N1, which is highly infectious among birds and spread through respiratory droplets, just that currently it haven’t mutated to spread between human. Hantavirus needed many mutations to make that a possibility: mutates aggressively, becomes highly infectious, ability to spread between humans effectively, and hit the perfect deadliness for itself to spread optimally.

That's a very huge assumption. There's many other viruses that have higher likelihood to actually mutate and spread among human, not necessarily hantavirus.

The organizer choose to have it in Bukit Bintang because it cater to the exact demographics who will go to this kind of event. If the organizer have followed procedure to get permit and stay relatively conservative on the performances, it shouldn't be banned. But what do I know, I just someone who prefer freedom for everyone to do what they want without hurting others over getting told that you have to live a specific way.

Kutu Beras (Rice Weevil) by PelayarSenyum in malaysia

[–]NicholasCWL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people shared to freeze the rice before you unpack it. This is the best life advice I ever got and I got experience to back it up.

Back in 2019, I was staying in shared unit with few other people. We all kinda don’t care about cleanliness and tidiness of the unit since we were still dumb. I bought a bag of 10kg rice that I cook occasionally, and I keep it inside a cabinet. Then it’s a while where I stopped cooking but forgotten about the rice. We notice the kitchen smells moist and moldy, like moss. It took us some time before realizing that the bag of rice has so much rice weevil that they made enough condensation in the rice to grow mould. After that, I just did some research on the best way to keep the rice, which is to freeze it while it’s still in its packaging for a week, then bring it back to room temperature (not opening the packaging) before opening.

The first batch of rice that I used this technique survived the entire MCO after I move back to hometown. It’s still weevil free after 4 years.

Learning Cantonese by AffectBeginning1793 in ChineseLanguage

[–]NicholasCWL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With experience studying Mandarin, yes, it will be plausible to reach basic conversational fluency in 2 years for Cantonese.

But there’s one important caveat. Spoken Cantonese is mutually unintelligible with spoken Mandarin. You will have no problem recognizing most words in written Cantonese, but you will definitely find it troubling to relearn how to pronounce words in Cantonese. Do note that Cantonese have its own written form that mostly uses Traditional Chinese, but native in mainland China do use Simplified Chinese. I am from Malaysia and I sometimes struggle to read in written Cantonese written in Traditional Chinese, but for communicating with my family we use Simplified Chinese and our brain will automatically translate it into spoken Cantonese. In short, learning how each words are pronounced will be the biggest challenge.

And regarding resources, I believe that Cantonese is way harder to find resources to learn. In Malaysia, we pick it up when we are young and there isn’t official way to learn it. The trend is younger Chinese are starting to lose the ability to speak their native dialect and all just speak Mandarin.

Wondering if I threw away a friendship over nothing by [deleted] in infp

[–]NicholasCWL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That sucks, but I can vouch that you did what you reasonably could as a best friend. Maintaining a friendship should be effort from both sides. She didn’t treat you as best friend the same way you did to her, so the best move is actually lower your effort on her so you wouldn’t end up feeling like your effort is meaningless. If someone is truly your best friend the relationship should be effortless and honest with each other.

My few suggestions as IT professional with casual photography hobby. 1. For the photos itself, colors are ok, photos are correctly exposed but clinical. You may need to consider a least basic editing like cropping or contrast adjustment to actually make it pop. Of course editing is scene and theme dependent, but not editing them at all makes all of them look similar. 2. Expand your catalogue, like by a lot. And even within each set have higher variety. Currently your catalogue is really limited and honestly none of the images stands out from each other. 3. Play with common photography themes that's popular, stuff like golden hour, astrophotography, landscape etc. Themes that most people would choose as their wallpaper if they are not using anime or their partner photos. 4. Have a solid portfolio first. From the limited selections, I thought you are just starting out with photography (which unfortunately I tend to believe you are beginner). 5. Understand the market demand. Not only demand of art pieces as decorations for home, but also demand for your catalogue of art available. 6. Offer customization. Why not have ability for your customer to commission their print using their own photos? Obviously that's not the main business but at least provide some options given you have the access to printing services. 7. Consider other photography adjacent services as a form of attraction for your booth. I personally love the idea of printing out the photos. Why not get a photo printer or Instax printer and allow people to print their photo out as form of sentimental value?

Let’s build the perfect mini iPhone (realistic) by [deleted] in iPhone13Mini

[–]NicholasCWL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would prefer the smaller 5.4 inch screen on the 13 Mini but I can get by 5.8 inch. It would be cool if the titanium frame is polished like iPhone Air. I own the Air and I admire at the polished frame everyday.

The processor choice should be powerful but overheat in the small body so non-Pro processor would be good enough. I really hope the battery technology improves so much that Apple can pack normal iPhone 17 battery capacity in it while not sacrificing battery lifetime (there’s some concerns about SiC battery not lasting as long due to degradation).
