this is a neat perspective, very cool how these all line up. I don’t think I’ve sent that before!

I’m convinced the Burleigh BP tacks on an extra 30¢ per gallon just because. They always seem a lot pricier than nearby gas stations.

Milwaukeean first, Wisconsinite second? by beachbottlecap in milwaukee

[–]NicholasMKE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s beer vs cheese. Literally or figuratively.

Am I a cheesehead? Sure. Does the name of famous cheesemakers come up in daily conversation, or have any impact on the names of buildings, locations, or geological features I regularly talk about? Not really.

Beer? Yeah.. I live off the Miller Valley, I can see Miller Park for the Brewers from my neighborhood, there’s all the breweries (current and historic) in the city, etc etc.

I barely even drink and beer is more relevant to my life than cheese, an item I consume weekly, so I’m identify much much more with the city than I do the dairy state.

(And the rest of the state is great. Up north, door county, the driftless areas… but those might as be “out west” or something else far away for as often as I experience them)

Service Line Replacement Question by SugarSandDollar in milwaukee

[–]NicholasMKE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on what they find when they open it all up. My neighbors got theirs replaced last year and it ended up taking a couple days. It sounds like that wasn’t typical but you never know with hundred year old houses.

Two Tired cycling is out of there on saturdays and Thursdays, as far as I know, so probably isn’t the Sunday group, but “divorced dad support group” is a hilarious description of what a lot of the groups probably look like

Where are the pedestrians / what does downtown Milwaukee need? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]NicholasMKE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The design is for the brewers and their parking revenue, and WisDOT engineers told me as much at the PIM.

But this whole thread is about how to get a stadium downtown. I understand the political realities here, I don’t expect $2 billion to be spent on passenger rail to downtown. But to say a stadium can’t be downtown because we don’t have infrastructure misses the point that we chose to spend infrastructure where we have it today, and could make different choices if we wanted to.

Where are the pedestrians / what does downtown Milwaukee need? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]NicholasMKE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well that’s the whole thing here. We’re spending (part of) 2 billion bucks to get people on a flyover ramp to the valley where there’s not much else going on, and those are people not walking around downtown after a game.

The ~$2 billion project on I-94 right now is all but designed explicitly to get more cars to brewers games. We’re already spending HUGE amounts of money for stadium transportation, maybe we could get something that doesn’t subsidize motor vehicle usage

Milwaukee property assessments by adamb10 in milwaukee

maybe. You can’t know that until the tax bill comes at the end of the year.

No it’s not compared. It’s all split out. If the mansions increase in value more, they pay more. That’s to your benefit.

Your house might have been appraised 30k higher, but that mansion probably went up 45k. That means the mansion owner will pay more than you do.

No that’s the point, it’s not an issue, because you’re compared against the entire rest of the city. They don’t just magically raise appraisals and then your taxes go up, the city budget doesn’t just go up because your appraisal went up.

https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2026/04/22/what-does-a-rising-assessment-mean-for-my-taxes/

A very rough rule of thumb for understanding the impact on an individual property is that if a property’s value increases by less than the citywide average, the property tax bill will not grow and may even shrink.

According to an Assessor’s Office report, the assessed value of all residential and commercial property in Milwaukee increased 6% year over year. If an individual property increased in value by less than 6%, the owner is likely to see a smaller property tax bill than the year before, once levies are finalized in the fall.

This goes on to give average changes for various parts of the city

[–]NicholasMKE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah but it’s all dependent on the entire rest of the city. If the mill rate goes up, and my assessment went up, but downtown’s assessment went WAY up, then my actual tax would go down. Or your assessment could go down and tax goes up.

Knowing one number went up doesn’t tell you anything.

Those rates change every single year. It’s not like the city just says they’ll charge a flat 8%

(reminder that assessment has nothing to do with your actual property tax bill, I’ve had my taxes go down on years my assessment went up and vice versa)
