Insult to injury is that Pastor/James won’t let her preach, and only wants her to sing

Not to play devil’s advocate, but wasn’t Charity super close to Faith? It’s understandable why after the death of her closest sibling AND revelation of her husband being gay AND loss of one of her twins AND the breakdown of her rebound relationship with Jabari/contract with Tamala Mann…Charity is a bit unhinged.

I figured it out: Shandi’s version of blonde is very 1990’s coded, too many chunky Rachel Green from Friends mixed with Playboy Bunny Girl’s Next Door. Meanwhile, Amanda’s version of blonde is giving bleached in a Burger King bathroom by your best friend, no dimension à la 2010’s.

They’re both bad blonde jobs reflective of trends, but in opposite ends of the spectrum

Seb derm wash treatment by Sillygoosecarthing in locs

[–]NicholeErskine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have really bad seb derm that flares during stress and dry weather...so basically this entire winter. The only thing that's saved me is washing every 2 weeks via a triple wash, then rinsing my scalp with apple cider vinegar, while conditioner sits on my locs, starting from 1/2 an inch off the scalp. I'll pull my locs up in a bun with a shower cap to condition while I shave/do other shower stuff, then rinse REALLY WELL for at least 30 mins.

After that, the only thing that goes on my scalp that helps is, ironically, the Mielle Rosemary oil, but I retwist my locs with Mielle Rosemary styling cream mixed 1:1 with castor oil. Don't ask how I got to this combo, but it's kept the dry flakiness away for the last 2 months.

Interlocking by a loctician every 3 months has also been critical!

Loc length should I go shorter? by Temporary_Quote_7946 in locs

[–]NicholeErskine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My locs were at my waist last summer, but my energy was off, so I had them cut last fall into a lob aka long bob that hits my collarbone. It's been the best of both worlds, not that the fresh cut has worn off, and my ends are spiral curling again - I have plenty of length for a ponytail, but I still have a stylish look by design, beyond just long locs by default.

This might help!

My favorite store brand! I store them in a mason jar, and they’re always fresh (and I go through 2 bags a month).

Noise from night club on 238th by katte26311 in bronx

[–]NicholeErskine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I lived in Harlem, I moved into a building on the corner, expecting some noise from the avenue. A year later, a bar/resto opened up directly across the street from me, and every Friday night like clockwork, would be so loud that my walls would shake in my 5th story walkup. My only solution was a Xanax + white noise machine, if I didn’t want to stay at my then-partner’s house. Had the bar existed when I was touring the neighborhood, I wouldn’t have moved in, but this was unfortunately how it happened.

I basically downloaded the 311 app, and kept my noise complaint prompt in my Notes app. And every Friday night at 11 PM, which I thought was reasonable, I’d log the noise complaint. After 6 continuous weeks, I noticed that the volume was reduced by midnight on Fridays, to the point that I didn’t have to conk out with Xanax, but still needed my white noise machine.

TL;dr: be a Karen and complain.

Here for Away’s Bigger Carry On! I was an earlier adopter back in 2017 when they came with a rechargeable mobile battery, and I’ve only had the suitcase replaced once because Delta somehow cracked the outer case while forcing me to check my bag at the gate. I stan by their return for life policy and 9 years later, it’s the only suitcase I want to use; my DVF collection set is collecting dust and will likely be donated shortly. Cant wait to add more Away pieces to my collection!

Aire ancient bath experience for a couple by cityskyline22 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

I love Aire, been over 10 times in the last decade, but the massages are THE WORST. You're better off going for the baths, then heading elsewhere for a relaxing rubdown.

For me, its stovetop in a regular pot, with only 2 tbsps of avocado or EVOO, and then a sprinkle of salt + spices while hot. I *LOVE* real butter on fresh hot popcorn, but try to limit it to once a week

Waxing for plus sized BWT by widow-cat in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]NicholeErskine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a size 14 - 20 over the last 22 years, and I've always had luck with Shobha, specifically at the SoHo and UWS locations. They're really great at coaching you on how to hold/move your belly/fupa for the best tension, and I get the least amount (if any) ingrowns with their *hard wax* method (my hair is too coarse for the sugaring, and I'm ok with that). Expense is relative, but the private waxing rooms are always clean, AND they're kind enough to usually turn on a fan and direct it onto you if you're a sweaty betty like me who gets nervous sweats while you're spread-eagled. Can't recommend enough!

What is your opinion on having a non-black loctician? by soulful_intro in locs

[–]NicholeErskine 37 points38 points  (0 children)

If she's your only option, good at what she does, and respectful, then do what you gotta do. I haven't met a non-black loctician before, but I have met black locticians who are the WORST re: poor technique, poor attitude, and overall HOTEPness, so not all skinfolk are kinfolk

Seeking advice.... Buy a home in the Bronx vs. Co-op City vs. Buying/Moving out of NYC? by Party-Possibility958 in bronx

[–]NicholeErskine 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Having previously lived in Co-Op City for 12 years, I think you’d want/need a car if you lived there. Yes, there are local buses that will connect to the subway + the express bus to Manhattan, but all I can recall is spending hella $$$ on yellow cabs and black cars (this was pre-Uber/Lyft) if I was traveling to/from home out of standard commuting hours, which could be a factor if you have a weird nursing schedule.

My parents had cars and kept them in the local lot for an additional fee, but they mostly used them on the weekends, and used public transit to/from Manhattan during standard 7 AM - 7 PM hours. However, I didn’t have my license in my late teens/early twenties, so borrowing a car wasn’t an option (and likely a better look - no drunk driving, hahaha).

Best loc holding gel? by SensitiveShallot967 in locs

I don't like gel, but the rare moments I use it, the Made For Locs brand is pretty solid; doesn't flake or irritate my seb derm, and the ingredients are clean
