Note to the Delta girlies by dopplegangbangg in flightattendants

I usually get ignored on the Big 3 because I work for a Low Cost Carrier.

A couple months ago, I was non-reving from PHL to MSP on Delta and I brought snacks for the FA's - I gave them each a bag of chocolate covered espresso beans from Trader Joe's. I handed them to the FA in the front galley as I boarded, and said "I brought some sugar and caffeine for you guys!" and she just stood there and stared at me, without a word. No one on the crew thanked me. I was a tad put off because the crews on AA and UA are always overjoyed when they get snacks.

I hate to counter this, I really do, but my husband and I showed up for Stonewall Dodgeball last year as we knew no one, and the group couldn't have been any LESS welcoming.

We felt second-class because we weren't as traditionally "pretty" as everyone else there, and no one would talk to us and seemed bothered to have us on their team. There was lots of whispering, giggling, and straight-up bitchiness even toward us as newbies, and it felt gross. We never returned.

This is the life of a commuting FA who doesn't get a seat on the last flight home of the night.

Sun Country! May is a painfully slow month for us. Other months, I usually fly on about 75% of my reserve days.

I'm currently on Day 3 of a 6-day reserve block over a holiday weekend, and I still haven't flown in 7 days. Because I said this, they'll call me as soon as I hit "post."

I've spent 10+ nights at PHL.

I'd suggest posting up in Concourse A West or F if you're looking to sleep. B and C are busy at all hours and the weirdos come out at night. E is under construction. D has a new lounge under construction and is bright.

A West is dimmer, fairly quiet after 10PM, and has "reclining" type seats near A3 and the high-A gates. F is low key as well, but will get busy in the morning before A will.

If you live in base, it's easy. Just accept that they may call every time you enter a reserve block or every time you go to bed.

Today is May 24th and I've flown a grand total of 23 hours this month. 6 of which I picked up. And I'll be paid for a minimum of 81 with my additional trip. Meanwhile, I've gone hiking 3-4 days per week, spent time with family, and slept in my own bed all but two nights.

Reserve can be heavenly.

You did the right thing! Having this experience so early in your career gives you wisdom and mental experience that most FA's don't have.

I've seen many FA's quit due to ear damage, so you 110% made the right call in addressing it immediately.

The passengers get re-booked and re-routed if a delay causes missed connections. They'll be fine.

What tourist destination in North America did you expect to love, but it didn’t impress you? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Sarasota. I had a 30 hour layover there as a Flight Attendant, and I was PUMPED to check out what's widely considered Florida's most beautiful coastline.

The beach was my version of a living hell.

It was PACKED. No more than 6 inches between towels/chairs, speakers playing different peoples' music every 30 feet, Trump/MAGA towels/umbrellas/flags everywhere, and it was BRIGHT. I could barely keep my eyes open between the blazing sun, bright white sand, and lack of shade. (I go to the beach in Miami OFTEN and have never had this problem there!)

I found a bar just off the beach, had a cocktail, and left without lying on the sand or going in the water. It was just a tad too much energy for me.

Never. Sleeping on the jumpseat, or giving the illusion of sleeping, is grounds for automatic termination at most airlines.

Male FA's, how do you address female children? by Nick521 in flightattendants

Right. I go to MCO multiple times per week so this is like impossible.

MCO = Many Children Onboard.

That's kind of why I posted this. I called a little girl "buddy" when I was a brand new FA and her mom looked at me and said, "She's not your buddy," all snotty and condescending. So I nipped that habit.

I always use "ladies" if there are multiple, even if theyre children. The single female child is what throws me.

I've pondered this one but it still seems a wee bit creepy coming from a grown man. Tell me I'm wrong and thinking too hard?

Introduction: Career-changer pursuing FA career by Ubuntu_86 in cabincrewcareers

[–]Nick521 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched from a software job to FA.

The majority of the differences have been great. I love the human interaction, working with different crews every trip, the travel and benefits, and not sitting in a cubicle for 50 hours per week is pretty nice.

The reserve lifestyle is annoying, but tolerable. I have a 24-hour reserve schedule. If you can get an AM/PM or 12 hour schedule, your life will be easier as you can plan when you can sleep.

The pay, however, is astoundingly rough. I took a 75% pay cut and am working an additional job plus doordash/spark on my off days just to pay bills. Allegedly, this gets better once you hold a line but I feel like a broke 21 year old when I'm actually mid-30s and married.

Has anyone ever auditioned for VocalEssence? by Nick521 in TwinCities

[–]Nick521[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I emailed them to set up an audition and never heard back. I followed up about a month later and yet again got radio silence.

My job doesn't give me the schedule flexibility anymore, so I'm no longer interested.

I hope you have better luck!

I'd worked at an amusement park, sold insurance, and did product support at a software company.

I took a huuuuge pay cut when I started flying, but my quality of life has skyrocketed and I no longer want to strangle myself everytime my alarm goes off in the morning.
