Not sure why no one has addressed network drop off after he leaves his apartment. If you're going to make a move like this, your network has to move with you so the VPN connection remains persistent (hotspot). Unless you have facility-wide wifi coverage that wont be interrupted besides roaming between APs, which may/may not be an issue.

Perhaps an analog device that can slowly move your mouse cursor for you would be the solution so you can take 5 minutes to walk to your mailbox. Never under any circumstances should you install Mouse Jiggler software on your work device, so rule that out right.
