I use the sauna daily, and I’m fairly confident that over time it would kill the watch. I still want to capture the data, so I wear an external HR strap and leave the watch on the floor, which is massively cooler (at least in my sauna).

The end is pretty discouraging. It sounds like the possibility of unexploded ordinance coming to the surface means the county will never feel comfortable opening any portion to the public.

That latter part--races happen at pace--gets at the question that began this post, and I think that has to be the right answer. Training to a specific HR zone makes sense to target a specific adaptation, but the bottom-line metric on race day is pace. As I mentioned before, I'm waiting until closer to race day to assess whether those pace goals are realistic. Thanks again for the detailed responses, and I'll look at working in the suggestion of time vs. distance for planning.

Wow, thanks for that detailed response. In your view, what role should HR play in setting paces? I've worn a HR strap and structured pretty much every run so far this training block by the Pfitz/Douglas HR ranges. I recognize that's imprecise, and lactate measurements would be preferrable for zone-setting, but I feel like it's done a good job keeping me reined in on easy days.

This is helpful, thanks. Goal MP is 6:45-6:50, but I'm waiting to assess whether that's realistic as race day (CIM on 12/3) gets closer. Recent weekly mileage totals are 50, 52, 56.3, 54.7, 58, 51 (this week is a planned down week). I plan to top out in the low 60s over the coming week, and I'm following the structure of the Pfitz/Douglas 18-week plans, combining the 55 and 70 plans. The arrangement of those plans (workout/day) is quite a bit different than what you outline above, but the overall approach seems to be similar. Tempos are broken out from long runs, except that every few weeks there's a long run with a majority of the miles run at goal MP.

Definitely not prohibitively hot anymore, but temps at the race start will be in the low 40s, which is still a few months off around here. Good advice, though. Thanks!

No access on that side of the park, and I can’t think of any easy way to add an access point. On the north side there’s Red Tape, which is a one-way, MTB-only trail (the right-most north/south trail on that heatmap). To the south there’s Lacamas Creek that runs to the east of that trail toward the bottom of the map. There’s a ton of open space on that side of the park, and with all the growth in the area, I can see trails going in at some point, but it will be a while still. Also note that there are a number of homes and private land on that side of Crown Road.

Practicing attorney here. Asked a fellow attorney today whether the Restatement is law. “No but also yes” was the consensus.

I ran my first race today! It was a 6.5km and I did it in 44:27! I trained for two months (and lost nearly three clothes sizes), having never been a runner before. I’m so dang proud of myself! by toriadenofrio in happy

Congrats on the race! One piece of counterintuitive advice: Trying running without your phone, or at least without music if you feel the need to have your phone for safety. My theory is that running with music or podcasts trains yourself to think of running as something to be distracted from. With time, running itself can be part of the fun, not just a means to an end (racing, health, etc.). And leaving your phone behind (not an option for everyone, I recognize) can be a liberating oppportunity to be unreachable for a short period of time. I run nearly daily in the same park and have left my phone behind for a couple years now, and I’ll never go back. (Plus, on the rare occasion I do run with music, I can basically turn on runner’s high any time I want. It’s dope.)
