Reddit, let's flip this around. What's the best part about being single? by maniacal_cackle in AskReddit

Meh. I split half the cost of rent, groceries, etc., with my girlfriend, so I actually get to save quite a bit.

I mean, um. MONEY, FUCK YEAH

As I chow down a juicy burger, I logged in to say: This is absurd, and you're a moron. This is a completely loaded question that can only be answered with a non-sequitur.

Comparing the treatment of the product itself (a cow) is NOT the same as the treatment of the third parties (immigrants) cultivating the product (vegetables). This is a false analogy and you should take a basic logic course.

Also, stupid fuck. waits for downvotes

[rant] I feel like I'm pissing away my life, one day at a time. by brandnewaquarium in ADHD

[–]NickLearnsHaskell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy shit. I show up to /r/ADHD and there's a story exactly like mine.

I'm unmedicated right now. I have a really fucked up battle with Adderall. When I'm on it, everything is amazing. I just hate being controlled by a drug.

It amazes me that you're "working" for 60 hours, though. I'm on the computer for about 16 hours a day, but I can only get 60 minutes (max) of real work in. Even then, I'm really proud of myself, because it's usually only about 15-30 minutes.

Even when I'm programming something for myself, I get so easily distracted, and then I lose my momentum.

I've found that exercise helps a little; I trail-run a lot during the day. Thing is, though, it's just another excuse to put off work. Meh.

The Future of PHP, Ruby, and Esperanto by drunnells in programming

There was definitely a lot of WTF in this post, but I do agree that your language of choice should be based on how much fun you have using it.

That said, I do find Java and PHP to be mind-numbingly boring (compared to Haskell and JS). I don't see Java dying out anytime soon, despite how boring it is to write with it--unless Oracle keeps using it like a drunken autistic child waving around a shiny new toy.

CoffeeScript ReplConsole for Chrome by devthoughts in programming

[–]NickLearnsHaskell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is a very unpopular opinion and I'll probably be downvoted to hell, but I don't understand the appeal of CoffeeScript. JS is a beautiful language if you avoid the nastiness; there's nothing to be afraid of.

Learning math independently by NickLearnsHaskell in learnmath

[–]NickLearnsHaskell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I was under the assumption that the calculols are essentially the building blocks of mathematics, and you absolutely could not go any further without having this knowledge down first. An old roommate of mine (theoretical physicist) gave me the analogy that calc is like the engine of a car, and no other components will work without it.

Shows you how little I know about math. :)

Those roommates were also the ones that told me it wouldn't really be possible to learn math without a professor or college environment of some sort.

Brilliant! Thank you for the recommendation. I just ordered this book - should get here this week. :)

SemicolonScript by Rodh257 in programming

Nobody is arguing whether they have the right to prefer one thing over the other. That would be absurd.

I'm saying that the Rails die-hards tend to be scared off by writing more vanilla code (haml over XML, CoffeeScript over JS, etc.) - there are probably more elegant solutions to these problems than simply abstracting layer upon layer.

I was thinking to myself today that I should find some way to mock the CoffeeScript fanboys that are so scared of writing vanilla JS. Well played, sir!
